Totally agree with you, Rachel. I bought the love of my life Toyota Camry 98 for $5K cash < 50K miles. Best investment to pay off my mortgage. Today, I am debt free, no mortgage, own a house in CALIFORNIA (yes very expensive area my house $650K) and my net worth > $1 million. No family no government assistance. I am a clerk. I am no one special. My only superpower is staying out of debt. America is the BEST place to make your dreams come true. I will never sell my Camry. I love her. She's the reason that I am debt free.

I bought an '06 Camry in '16 for $2,500. 360,000 miles now running strong. Great car! I just don't understand how a clerk can afford a $650,000 house in an expensive area! I live in an average cost of living area with an average income, and the most I can possibly afford is maybe $250,000. I haven't even tried to get approved for a mortgage yet. I have no debt and live frugally, but I don't how people without above average incomes can buy a house comfortably without taking on too much risk.

I've heard a tip that if you are just tired of your old car, spend 350 bucks if in your budget on a full interior and exterior showroom detail to make it like new and clean. Sometimes people are just tired of the old dustyness from a car but its actually still a good car. Thoughts on this?

Agree. And I’d add saving $500-$1000 for a bit of bodywork too, if it’s a good car, because sometimes people are just tired of looking at dents and scratches. With some bodywork touches, plus a good detail, a car can look almost new again - for far less than a used $10K car.

Congrats! I love my 2011 Impreza hatchback. Purchased it new two weeks after my son was born. Over the years I’ve only had to do small maintenance like oil changes, new tires, one battery change, and checkups. Now that I’m at 107K miles, I’ve had to take care of bigger maintenance items. It’s natural for parts to wear down after 12-13 years. I’ve never had any transmission problems fortunately. Subarus are excellent cars, statistically they’re the longest running cars on the road, and they age well - meaning they look good even when they’re old. :-)

While we are on our debt free journey we also saved 10K to buy our daughter her first car. We were able to find a 2014 Ford Focus Sport for $8,000. My only advice is don't be in a hurry to buy. Cars in this price range disappear quickly I called about a few prior to this one, and by the time I had a dealer call back the cars had already sold. I think we looked for about 10 months before we found something, but once you find it you need to have the money to purchase.

I bought my 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid in Feb 2013. It had 11,000 miles and was used as a courtesy car at Toyota Cool Springs. At the time they were also offering free lifetime power train warranty, which I haven’t had to use to this day. I found the car for $25k online, which was cheaper than the dealer had it on the lot, so they honored the online price. At the time I was driving from Lewisburg to Nashville and back daily for work and to this day I still travel a lot for military duty. It has over 260k miles and has never had any major issues. We have always done the suggestion services. To add to this, only because I was listening to to Dave and Rachel’s calls the other day on millionaires….. We have a net worth of $1.5m (800k retirement, 200k stocks, 2 properties and about 100k cash). I still drive my 260k mileage Camry. My husband still drives his 2013 Toyota Corolla with about 160k miles (bought the same day as mine but new for 18k). And just to be clear, I have every intention of trying to cash in those two powertrain warranties WHEN something happens to one of our engines or transmissions 😝. I plan to give my car to our daughter when she starts driving in 4 years and buy me another Camry ❤.

I just bought my new daily driver a 2009 Ford Fusion with only 64,000 miles on it. Got it for $6,500 here in georgia. It was a one owner car and she took it to the same dealership for every maintenance done to it. Oil change literally every 3000 miles and it was garage kept. I actually called the dealership where it was serviced in South Carolina and they talked to me for about 30 minutes and went through every single thing on the Carfax with me. I bought it off of Facebook Marketplace so there are still really good deals out there if you're a patient and look. Of course you always got to do your research on good model years and bad ones. For instance the first generation of Ford Fusions were basically Mazda products, with ford badging on them. Another great model you can look for is the Toyota Camry from 04 to 06. Those cars are built to last and if you can find one with low mileage they're easy to work on. From 07 on they started having a problem where they would burn oil in the four cylinders but even then it's nothing too bad. just top it off with oil every couple thousand miles between oil changes.

I bought my Ford F-150 new in 2013. (Did you ever try to buy a good used truck? ) I don't drive it much while in Virginia, but mostly for trips to the dump once a month. It is eleven years old now, and has only 34.500 miles on it. The only maintenance so far has been changing the oil and filter, and a new set of tires last winter. It is essential for getting my wife and I back and forth from Virginia to our winter home in Florida. Love your down to earth attitude, Rachel!

I remember my parents and grandparents looking for cars in the 80s and 90s and Toyotas, Hondas, Mazdas and Subarus were the go-to brands for reliability even back then. It’s just cultural within those companies to build quality, reliable vehicles. I own a Corolla and my wife drives a Camry both at well over 100 thousand miles and they’ve just been consistently reliable. Corolla is 6 years old and the Camry is 18 years old. Total repair costs on both vehicles outside of tires, brakes and oil changes during both vehicles lifetimes: Approx $380 (one water pump 3 yrs ago and a wing mirror).

the best and cheapest used car is the one you are already driving!! I actually hit a deer and smashed the front of my car this spring. I beat the hood and fender out to clear the tires and bought a headlight housing off ebay used. I will just keep driving this car untill the wheels fall off!!!

We used to buy used cars, but the monthly “fixes” we had and inconvenience of them breaking down randomly was more than making payments on a new car. SO, in 2019 we tried a new route: buy 2 new cars, and pay them off. Now we have 2 cars that are going to be paid off in a couple months, and we KNOW there’s no problems with them, they have great mileage, and we’ve taken great care of them. So we can use the payments we’ve been paying on them to go towards our mortgage, while we continue to drive our great vehicles for many years to come. My 2019 has 17k miles on it, and I will keep it for many years to come. I can’t WAIT to get them both paid off very soon!

My wife and I bought a 2000 Mazda Protege LX back in 2001 with only 14,000 miles on it - it was a manager's lease model. We had a car payment, but we were smart, paid it off in 4 years. It's only just now getting to the point where we need to replace it, not because of the engine or transmission, but because 20-odd years of Minnesota winters and road salt have taken their toll on the body. It's got 320,000 miles on it, and if we could afford the body work, it would probably make it to 500,000.

Got a Mazda 3, which replaced the Protege, brand new back in 2005 when we lived in Pittsburgh and it was mechanically fine 10 years later when we moved to Tampa, but it was also showing cancer from the Pittsburgh winters. Otherwise a totally reliable runner.

Love the research, however, avoid the Toyota Venza and check it before you buy it. Past models are known for constant brake issues. Let the buyer beware. Now, I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey which still runs like a champ. And 2003 and 2007 Honda civics are still in our family running great with regular maintenance. Thanks Rachel.

I'm currently driving a Ford Focus. It has over 200K. It is hanging by a thread and it is only a matter of time until I need a different car. I'm currently saving cash but only have about 1K saved so far. When I save more, and I'm ready to buy, WHERE do I find these cars? I've never bought a used car but I'm determined to never have a car payment again. Help! I'm in Houston.

I’m driving a 2011 Honda Accord EX-L, and it’s the best car I’ve ever had. Reliable. Solid. It can even be fun to drive on a twisty two-lane! It still looks good and not at all dated or old-fashioned. We paid $8,600 cash for it 3 years ago and found it on the used lot of a Lexus dealer; here’s all these seemingly wealthy individuals ordering $60k-$100k luxury cars…and my wife & I and our three kids buying daddy an aging Accord for under $10k. It was glorious!

I agree with all but the Mazda and Ford. The Mazda is built on a Ford Focus chassis and they were both poorly designed and cheaply built vehicles plus, the camber is offset from factory so they burn through tires twice as quickly as most vehicles. As for the Ford Fusion, they had a very high lemon count so I wouldn't recommend going anywhere near them.

Just watch getting an older car with a lot of miles on it. That's when you have to start replacing and fixing it a lot. Always have your mechanic check them out before purchasing them. Hondas and Toyotas last. Corollas are a great option, but they want more than 10 grand for them. So good on gas and le edition are comfortable.

I own a 2006 Pontiac vibe that has been an amazing investment. If you buy certain years when Pontiac was going out of business, they were no longer making their own engines to put in these cars, but using Toyota engines instead. So with a 2006 Vibe, I essentially have a Toyota Matrix engine in a Pontiac Vibe frame, BUT at a Pontiac price!! Almost closing in at 200K miles and very minimal issues. Mostly just oil changes and tires for maintenance.

Just make sure if you buy the gti as recommended to have the timing chains done. Those are the biggest expense culprits that can lead to failure. Also avoid sunroofs from them. I would rather people go for the 2.5 L Jetta SE 2012-2013. Many 300k mile ones and super bulletproof engines

I had my 2019 Chevy Equinox paid off and only bought it with 13 yes 13 miles on it. Not 13,000 13!! It had 68,000 miles on it…and I just totaled it a few weeks ago🫠🤦🏼‍♀️ I’m now desperately looking for a car that’s safe, reliable, good quality, and a good price. I’ve been trying to stick with a budget of 10-12,000$ so that way I can have some left over to save for my emergency fund for the car in case something happens! This video came at the right time!💙🙏🏼
