In this Video, Sam King joins me for a round at Carnoustie Championship course. He is a 10 handicap but I am not sure about that. I think there are ways he can cut shots off his game.
1. Avoid negativity on the golf course. If you see a bad shot coming, hit another shot you feel comfortable and confident with.
2. Use a distance device like a GPS or a rangefinder. Sam was underclubbing big time because he had the wrong distances into the green!
Just a couple of tweaks and his confidence skyrocketed to the point he only took a few more drop shots in the final 12 holes.

The crazy thing about watching this back is my change in attitude. After a few tweaks and conversations about positive mindset, you can really see the shift! It’s like watching 2 different golfers within the same round.

Great round, Sam! If you are working on your swing, fixing the right-hand elbow on the backswing will change your game. One pro lesson, and it's done. I had the same swing style and got far more speed and consistency after my right arm elbow stopped "chicken" winging on the back swing.

Great video again Matt. Honestly your insights always resonate so much it feels like you’re talking to me! I’m playing off 11 and can have little glimpses of low handicap golf. And you’re right the lost shots are always silly things like not committing to a shot. Or losing shots inside wedge range. This gives me so much hope that I’m not far off. Thanks Playa! 👍🏻

I feel like this is me. I'm currently a high 13 handicap, but know I'm better than that. Similar to The King's round, it's the double bogeys that do me in, otherwise I feel like I have a chance at 0.5+ strokes a hole. I can get really negative on bad shots, but feel like I move past them quickly, but it probably hurts my confidence in my swing even if I don't realize it. As always, love the video

This is really instructive and validating! Sam is a good player, and I see where we share some of those mental tendencies, especially early on in his round. A 6 HDCP, I played Carnoustie in May last year, and had one of my best 9 holes of my Scotland trip with a very solid 38 on the front 9. Unfortunately I 3-putted 10 and that set me on a negative frame of mind - and then when I got a bad break on #13, that began a string of 4 straight doubles :( Fortunately, I got my head on straight for 17 and 18 and parred them both for a 44 on the inward 9, for a total of 82. I would have taken that if offered at the start, but what could have been! You are 100% correct on being positive - that is always my biggest struggle. Really need to shake off making a mistake or suffering a bad break, and it's amazing what can happen with a positive plan and attitude!

I guess I never realized how negative we are almost immediately upon hitting a shot. And you could see he was changing throughout the day. I just wonder if we all took a positive mindset to the course what it turns into over time. Now im going to be hyper-aware of my own comments.

Love your videos! I am a 14 handicap and am setting a goal to become a 9 handicap this year. I track statistics here are mine: Avg Score: 85 | Fairways: 55% | GIR: 27% | # Pars: 7 | # Putts: 32 | # 1 Putts: 5 | #3 Putts: 1 | # Penalties: 2 I normally play golf twice a week but don't practice too much. To reach my goal: 1. How much would you recommend practicing per week? 2. How often should I play golf per week? 3. How should I structure my practicing (putting strategy, chipping strategy, etc.)?
@GolfSidekick
@GolfSidekick 7 ай бұрын
Play 2-3 times a week Go beyond those stats. Ask questions why bogey’s and double and triple happened. What was the shot that led to bad score. How can you stop those? Practice inside 50 yards including chipping pitching putting bunkers for 3 hours for every one hour of the long game. Get rid of penalties by finding the pattern of what you’re doing to make those penalties. Then stop doing those things. Do something better. Practice missing the green in better places for more up and downs. You probably need shorter approaches into greens too so you miss in a tighter radius around the hole. So on certain holes, you need to have shorter approaches. Strategize to find more pars

How in the world does a guy who does you tube golf and claim to be a 10 hdcp NOT understand front/middle/back distances and have the tech to go along with it? I mean, a range finder? Mind blown really. I mean it wasn’t this cat’s first trip round the golf course…

You can get to a 10 handicap using only the yardage stakes, not even knowing your correct distances - that is how a lot of people are stuck at 10 handicap. Then they discover their true carry and drop 5 shots off their handicap. I see it often.

As much as i can understand him gripping down, on a course as long as carnoustie (or should i say carnasty) i feel like him trying to drive it a bit further would benefit in terms of shorter approaches to greens. Hitting a hard fade can sometimes lead to those high spinny shots that end up hurting you distance wise. On such a tight track where you arent always hitting FIR the trade off might be worthwhile
