Years ago in my town there was a water tower that was 250 feet tall and the town sent out invitations to bid and all the contractors had bids that the town thought was too high. Then the high school physics teacher and the high school metal shop teacher put their heads together and they made it a school project and ended up doing the job for less than 5% of the lowest professional bid. The physics teacher designed the plan and the metal shop teacher and students carried it out and basically it was a matter of making a handful of cuts in the right places to weaken the legs then run a long cable around the weak legs taking a page out of Star Wars they tied the legs with the cable and basically pulled on it. 500 high school students pulled on the cables all at once and down came the tower. Then the metal shop teacher got the metal shop students to salvage the metal and added it to the school's materials inventory for projects though they had so much that they still had most of the structural materials left over so they sold it as scrap and that brought a few thousand dollars that went to new equipment for the school. Now they have the new water pumping station and new towers in place of the old ones and that produces five times what the old pumping station produced which is more than double the town's needs.

I like that you identify the structures being demolished and tell how and why. I get frustrated with videos that show demolition after demolition with no context given at all.

It's not the weit of the radio tower that does the work ,its the high tension of The other wires that pulls the tower down. The same effect can be achieved by accident if wrong techniques are used during maintenance on the tower, the stay wires are in so high tension that an uneven slacking of them can buckle or fold over the tower

Demolitions are so satisfying to watch, all the Demolition engineers do insanely good jobs dropping these structures.

The weighted explosive blankets, as you called them, on the stay cables are only blast shield pads. The charges are smaller and attached directly to the cables.

i do demolition for a living, we use trackhoes with hammer attachments, the destroying part is great, every little boys dream job, clean up sucks, have to separate everything for proper disposal

I remember many years ago, I was making a delivery of timber to a site in Kent, and next door to the place, there was an old industrial building of some sort being demolished. The was one big tracked machine, with huge hydraulic jaws at the end of a long arm, literally biting the building to pieces! Now that HAS to be fun!

Shame you haven`t included a chimney demolition by the Late Fred Dibnah, an English steeplejack who would use fire to bring the structure down! He would cut slots out of the base on the side that he wanted the chimney to collapse first, hammering a length of telegraph post in it`s place. It was important that he used telegraph post timber as it was a fast burning wood with an in-built accelerant. When he had sufficient timbers in place he would set a huge bonfire at the base of the chimney and set fire to it. The natural draw of the chimney would help the fire burn quickly and fiercely and when the timbers had weakened through being burnt away the weight over the now weak and missing timbers would bring the chimney down!

The overhead run ways were taken down with shape charges. They simultaneously cut the beams with shape charges.

Germany might like to have that power plant back now.

Interesting: starting at 1:22, you start hearing a faint "whooooooo" in the background. I'm assuming it's the air being forced out the top of the chimney as it collapses.

Kudos for a live announcer, not the computer generated crap. However, comma, the tall transmitting device is called a tower or a mast. What was cut is a guy wire. The weight of the remaining guy wire pulls the tower over.The transmitter is not on the mast. It is in a house near the base of the tower.

We wanted to know why firemen were hosing down water on the clouds of dust. So asked the most qualified person on earth, who said it was to hose down the clouds of dust.

The mixing plant demolition did not do the street-lamp standard much good. Coal mine cylindrical building oops.

I’ve been to a number of demos. The toxic materials released are significant, and a real danger to anyone who inhales them. Don’t know how else to do it that wouldn’t be cost prohibitive. Maybe we should be building out, not up.
