I am one of those few people who liked FFXII from the beginning. I feel one of the reasons for that was I was so inexperienced with video games (got my first console in 2003 after dropping out of university). That made it so I didn't have any set expectations and everything was new to me.

I found it quite engaging after Zestiria left me... well, bored. Not sure what exactly it was, but it just felt to much like a chore than a game. Berseria did way better, as did Arise.
@Harkz0r
@Harkz0r 2 жыл бұрын
@@Llortnerof It's funny, I never minded Zestiria while I was playing it, but on reflection it's the only Tales game I didn't love in some sense. I might even go so far as to say I dislike it. As a result I skipped Berseria, but playing Arise is a dramatic improvement - I just wish it didn't 1. lock certain artes/titles behind paid DLC and 2. actually let you combo bosses properly (i.e. with hitstun). I still like Graces and Xillia 2's combat the best, but as an overall game, Arise is pretty great.
@Llortnerof
@Llortnerof 2 жыл бұрын
@@Harkz0r You should give Berseria a try. It's a lot more like Arise than Zestiria. Also has a much darker storyline like the former and explains the world way better than Zestiria. Between Arise and Berseria, i'd say the latter edges slightly ahead for me. It's also the only one of the three that has Eizen as a party member rather than a boss. But yeah, kinda similar for me. Zestiria is not necessarily bad so much as... forgettable? Gameplay, story, even the graphics are all just to average to make much of an impression. I think my personal overall favourite is Abyss, even if everybody needs to get called out more for pouncing on a 7y old.

Hi Erick, I have VP2 and I have the same experience. I played didn't understood battle system so I ditched it. So I was thinking it would (maybe) be a good idea for a video (or series) to "teach" or share your tips and tricks on games. You could do a poll or something to allow the community to select the game. I really would like to learn how to properly play VP2 and many other games that I ditched because I couldn't get their battle system.

I think the worst i had was with Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, thinking it was for kids when my friend recommended it, i don't think i've ever been so blown away and shocked at how wrong i was, people hospitalized, investigating cases to the point of most disturbing human trafficking that almost left me without sleep, and Digimon reminding me of literal SMT Demons with how cruel they get when possessing humans. For lesser mentions i had God Eater as well, i went with good expectations, saw it was heavy on 3D and almost got turned off, and eventually became one of the biggest fans ever, Tales of Series i detest action JRPGs, but i got hooked on it and play it to this day there's something unique about how they go about it as an action JRPG, lastly Hyperdimension Neptunia, i started with trying Birth 1 but the humour didn't get me, many years later i tried the very first game on PS3 and the atmosphere of the story and humour nailed me entirely, as i went through them i did not like the 3rd game Victory and my expectations only went lower as i played, but it ended up my favourite of them completely changing my mind near the end, its crazy.

Well, I add my list (it's a strange one but still): 1) Death and Re;Quest - slow start, but the game opens with new characters and becomes really one hell of the ride 2) Legend of Heroes Crossbell Ark - it was difficult to switch to new env and some changes were... questionable, but in the end I enjoyed the game and find it refreshing. 3) Ar Tonelico Melodies of Elemia - slow start but the characters, story becomes really good, has some funny moments, drama, problems, battle mechanic is good. 4) Stella Deus - at that moment had no net, so bought this game on the whim... played for 2-3 hours and drop it to the "may be someday"... Than after few months started it again and played for few days with little rest (sleep, eat, some fresh air). 5) Xenosaga Ep 2 - loved 1 episode, but many told that second is worse, far worse... But in the end I enjoyed it and find it great continue. With adding depth to the characters. Can add more, but 5 are pretty good. Thanks for the video.

For Xeno 2 I guess it depends on your expectations. Story wise it’s amazing. But it’s sidequests we’re brutal, boring and time consuming. I got into it knowing it wasn’t that great and although I loved the story and eventually liked the combat after I figured out how to use it’s finer points. But those side quests dropped it to a average JRPG for me. It met my expectations which weren’t all that great to begin with.

@@redstratus97 well, i agree, that sides were brutal... but it was why I tried finding out everything and build good tactics in the fights. Reward was the victory. Hard earned victory. I had a similar experience getting into Ys. I first tried The Oath in Felghana, and it feeling more like a fast 2D Zelda than an RPG, ridiculous balancing with random enemies doing boss-level damage, and most of the boss fights having heavy positioning/platforming elements eventually made me simultaneously get bored and rage quit. Then I tried Memories of Celceta after seeing some footage of modern Ys games, and was SHOCKED by how much better it was in nearly every conceivable way, becoming one of my favorite games I've played on PC (though I still need to finish it). Now I'm definitely a fan, at least when it comes to the modern Ys games. I do plan on playing Origin though, since that's the one "old school" Ys game I'm super interested in despite it having similar aspects to TOiF.

The JRPG that surprised me the most is Final Fantasy XIII. I was never really into RPG games before and had never played a FF game. I gave it a try after finding the physical copy lost in my boyfriend's belongings... and WOW!! I love everything about it and sometimes I just pick my phone and listen to the amazing soundtrack of the game. The funny thing is that my boyfriend hasn't played yet, after all those years. Another game that surpassed my expectations was Persona 4 Golden. As I said, I was never really into RPGs before. The only RPGs that I played before FFXIII was the Digimon games, as I love the franchise. Most of the Digimon games are turn based, so I kinda knew what to expect, but still Persona 4 Golden blow my mind in so many ways!! @armorvil
@armorvil 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely, they have the same mechanics with only small changes here and there. Like when you send knights in quests ; in the second Brig you can somewhat target specific things but in the original it's just random (except that you can only get certain knights by sending a specific knight, that kind of thing). I still prefer quests in the original though, since they all come with their small stories. I found it lazy that in the second one you instantly get the "success" or "failure" messages without any context. And you find out that you get a new character before the story of how you got him/her is told, it's a bit dumb. It's like the devs liked the auto-spoiling of MGS The Phantom Pain in its beginning mission credits and decided to implement the feature... Anyways, even though Brig 2 added a few gameplay things, the first Brig on the PS1 is still the superior experience imo (especially the never-released-outside-Japan Brigandine Grand Edition, but there is an english patch that fully translates it - it even adds subtitles to its anime cutscenes). More charming setting and characters, better music, easier to read battlefields thanks to its great 2D sprites, ... ...Definitely one of my favorite games ever. I'm still hopeful for a 3rd Brigandine (which would actually be the 4th) that would blow the original out of the water.

I still own my original copy from back then plus a working PS2 thanks to my wife. I have kids now and I'm about to introduce them to it for the first time ever. It's partially thanks to you Erick that I'm about to give this game another chance. I grew up with my father playing the 1st on PS1 in 1999/2000. I've gotten really far on the PSP remaster but haven't beaten that one either despite the fact that I love it

As for Xenoblade, I wanted to play it since its reveal on the Wii, and had to wait 10 fucking years to play it (It was impossible to get the Wii version, and it was only for the new 3DS while I already bought the OG one) so I bought my Switch along with it. And... let's say that despite I waited 10 years, it still somehow suprised me by how amazing it was. It is my favorite game on the Switch, and my favorite Nintendo game ever.

Xenoblade chronicles on wii surpassed my expectations and shot up to the top of my jrpg list hall of fame like dq8, xenogears and smt strange journey. Last jrpg i really played was maybe dq8 on ps2 and nothing really grabbed me during the 360 era. Heard some good things about XC then tried on wii then bought the 3ds version and wow, what a sci fi story. Single handedly made me fall in love with jrpgs again.

Lost odyssey was my fav xbox360 JRPG it was equivalent to FFX on ps2 but for xbox360 and boy was it good the story is the best battles are challenging and strategic and good too, everything about it was amazing and it even made me cry one time, you can also explore the sea and air, the sea exploration was cool we need more games that are jrpg that can let u explore more worlds in the sea, wild arms 3 i think was another that pulled it off or part 2 can't remember which one.

There's two...Neptunia VIIR exceeded my expectations by a mile, did not want it to end. Okami, although not really an rpg, blew me away, I got it just so i could see how it looked but wow it really was a seriously incredible experience for me on the PS2.

So great that there still are people out there whose expectations can be surpassed. I feel like I'm impossible to be impressed. No matter how low I try to set my expectations, I have never thought of a game as "meh I don't think I'm gonna like this one". To make matters worse, if I know a game _exists_ , I get really curious about it, thus the desire to try them out is always there. But hey, it's not necessary to set expectations low to surpass them, if you set high expectations and the game is capable of still surpassing them, that's impressive and heck, has happened to many people.... WHY THEN NOT ONLY THAT NEVER HAPPENS TO ME, BUT I EVEN GET DISSAPPOINTED OUT OF GAMES I REALLY LIKE, even if it's slight, _it's always there._ Well, almost, but lack of deception does not mean presence of impression. Whenever I hear someone said they got Mind Blown, I get so envious because I have never in my life felt something close to what it seems it is. So far the games I've been dissapointed the least are the Touhou games, Freedom Planet, the MegaMan X series, Castlevania Bloodlines, Pikmin 3, Danganronpa Ultra Despair Girls, my favorites of Mario, Sonic and Kirby, and in terms of RPGs: Paper Mario Color Splash (I'm serious with that one), Final Fantasy V, Disgaea 1 Complete, Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, Octopath Traveler, and Devil Survivor 2 which I'm currently playing trough before 1 for it to not spoil me with the lack of oppressiveness or clichés that supposedly 2 has and 1 doesn't. I wonder if Xenogears, Xenosaga, Valkyrie Profile or Lost Odyssey will manage to finally impress me.

One rpg I always bring up that it seems nobody ever talks about is Shadow Hearts. Right from the start, the game had me hooked. I will admit, Shadow Hearts 3 wasn't the greatest, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit. I also really liked the Xenosaga games. For some reason, everyone else I know that played them disliked the series.

For me, Nayuta no Kiseki had the same effect as almost all mentioned on your video. It is the more complete action RPG I've played so far (collectibles, quests, simple cooking mechanics, post game extras continuing the story - if there is nowadays, EVERY one of these would be sold as DLC). For Valkyrie Profile 2, it's a great game but I never had the chance to continue playing it (I have a bootleg version of the game and it has the long loading problem related by every one who tried it - and the official version of the game is very expensive for those who don't live in USA)

Totally right, Nayuta no Kiseki FTW. It's beautiful. And that True Final Boss... such an emotional fight, especially with that music. Silmeria is grindy as hell, but the ending is pretty satisfying. Still prefer VP1, though (their true ending route... beautifully original, though a bit hard to discern without a guide).

I'll just list my 3 here. 1. White Knight Chronicles - Even with the majority of people rating it rather low from the slow combat, poor lip sync, mediocre story and minimal interaction from your character, I ended up loving it. The semi-mmo like feel of the combat menus and the action chips, the Monster Hunter like material collection and part breaks to progress weapons and armor, and a town building system that itself could easily add many hours to the experiance. Then we got WKC 2, problems fixed, combat smoothed and some fairly good story elements. 2. Rune Factory 1 - As a Harvest Moon fan I was mildly excited for its release, but was hesitant about the combat possibly ruining the experiance. Boy was I wrong. The combat wasnt the best in the world but it ended up meshing really well with the farming, allowing for a much easier time with the massive field you end up with. And eventually the combat just started feeling fun. Came for the farming, stayed for the batle. Though sadly, I have yet to find another in the series that comes even close. 3. Ehrgeiz: God Bless the Ring - Typically you wouldnt think to much about a side game included with a fighting game, especially an rpg. While not the most pollished it has just enough to keep you going. A hunger system where the nutrients in the food determines stat growth, simple but functional combat that can be a bit challenging from time to time, and the all consuming wine trade that sometimes teaches you why you dont trade stocks. All together it wont leave a deep immpression, but it will last, and sometimes you'll wake up thinking, "I should play that again." This list is randomly ordered, the numbers are only to make reading a bit easier.

First that came to mind for me was Arc Rise Fantasia. Bought it on release, tried it out, then forgot about it. Started it up again a couple of years later and it wasn't long before I was thinking, "Why didn't I play this sooner?!" and played to the end. Getting ready to stream another playthrough of it coming up since it's literally been 10 years since my last run.

Utawarerumono Mask of Deception is my game. I bought it on the Vita when it was released. Played it and realized the novel part of the game threw me off. There was a lot of dialogue between the characters and not enough action. I gave it another try when the sequel was announced. My God I fell in love with it and I could not put my vita down. I took it to work to play during my lunch break with my headphones on. I appreciated the conversations between the characters, the music and the story of course. I immediately played mask of truth once I beat Deception. I cried at some parts and couldn't believe a game made me cry. I immediately played mask of truth and fell more in love with the series. I ended getting the platinum trophies for deception, truth and the prequel prelude to the fallen. Currently waiting for the anime version of mask of truth to start airing.
