My problem with pulling furniture away from the wall is 1. It doesn’t work in my living room, 2. It leaves ugly gaps showing cords from lamps, etc. I like wide open, empty space in the middle. Since removing a console table from behind my sofa and pushing it against the wall, my living room feels clean and uncluttered. I have a small home with open concept. I also watch my grandchildren and I love to have a place where they can bring their toys out and play ❤ With that being said, I have been enjoying and learning from your channel. Hey Reynard. I have a small living room/kitchen apartment. I live alone and don't have many visitors, my choice lol, occasionally my mum and her husband may call. I currently have an 18yr old 2 seater sofa which is still quite big in the room but it is uncomfortable now and has a low back, and I need something to support my back and my head now I'm older. Question: should I buy two high back armchairs, or another high back two seater sofa? I also live at the top of 6 flights of stairs with no lift. There isn't room for a sofa AND a chair
@susananders3834
@susananders3834 2 ай бұрын
I previously lived in a situation similar to yours. Getting furniture up narrow stairs and through narrow doors was the primary decision factor. I purchased (and still have) a loveseat (2 seater sofa). However, two arm chairs would also work, especially if you have room for an ottoman on at least one of them. Go for comfort. I personally like to have living room furniture that is comfy enough for a nap. 😊
@reynardlowell
@reynardlowell 2 ай бұрын
I'd always go for function first. So if armchairs are better for you, then go for it. But, can also look into modular sofas (detachable, so they ship smaller and can go up the stairs) that comes in modules. Considering small space and high back, I'm leaning towards two armchairs (and ottoman for legs would be nice).

Hi Reynard! I know many designers say that our nightstands should match and be large scale to make the rook look luxe, but I was wondering what you'd suggest for someone like me who doesn't want matchy nightstands, but want what I put next to the bed to look good and be cohesive.
@whiteserpent6753
@whiteserpent6753 2 ай бұрын
The advice I’ve read on this is to match as many elements as you can if you’re not getting matching pieces, but the most important thing to match is the height. You can tie mismatched pieces together with matching lamps, or unified art/mirrors above them, or the same color/wood, or they’ve got the same leg style, etc, but if the heights don’t match, you have to find a way to fix that or it looks bad. (This is limited to the idea of nightstands/bedside tables/bedside chests. If you put a nightstand on only one side and have a chair on the other or something, your eye won’t expect to see the same height.)

I live in a very small house. My living room has two large windows with windowsills that stick out from the wall. So, technically, my furniture is away from the wall but against the windowsill. @reynardlowell

I think it's fine. Probably more important to make sure the sofa is not too high back (i.e. around windowsill height or just slightly more). The windowsill can also become a "surface" to put items if needed. I'm glad you liked the checklist :)

The "golden ratio" is mostly BS, in the images 5:53 the ratio do not match and are just scaled in to fit a shape, in other cultures like in Japan where other shapes as a rectangle is prefered the "golden ratio" seldom fit in. You can often get same result be "rule of thirds" or any rule that create a symmetry or repeated pattern.

How many plants is too much?
@scuttleport549
@scuttleport549 Ай бұрын
I think it depends on function. Are they decoration, a hobby, or a collection? You need to consider where and how much natural light you get and how much space you have. Do you need to open the windows easily? Grouping different plants together on a tray makes moving them easy. Layering is really useful here as well. Big shiny leaves contrasting with light airy fronds. Pots that add texture or sink into the background. My personal limit is around 45 plants at 40 sq m, plus seedlings, but I'm a professional gardener and a huge plant nerd sooooo. The sheer amount of greenery ties together my mismatched flea market furniture really well.
@timward3116
@timward3116 2 ай бұрын
It's too bad that, for many people, the option of switching out furniture doesn't exist. Incomes can be too low or costs can be too high to justify "wasting" money on a new object when the old (paid for) object still functions. Sure, people can try to sell their old junk but they'll never get what they orginally paid for it. And sure, people can try to buy someone else's old junk - but finding the right old junk at the right cost is like looking for a needle in a haystack. I think the hodge-podge of items that don't follow the golden ration and either lack color or have incompatible colors are probably the reasons many don't like their homes.

Just block the fireplace with the tv and display flames on it if you really must. Or rip the fireplace out and call it a day. I don’t know anyone who actually uses their fireplace. I know a lot of people who fantasize about having a fire in their fireplace when house shopping, but nobody who actually uses the fireplace after they’ve bought the house.
@zerowhite2286

Well I installed a fireplace in my house and have never regretted it! It would be more accurate to say that I reinstated the fireplace in my Edwardian house - white marble bought cheaply from a local junk shop and probably ripped out of a neighbouring house because it fits beautifully. I love my open fire, and use it regularly in season. The tv lives in an alcove to one side. Each to their own.
@whiteserpent6753
@whiteserpent6753 2 ай бұрын
@@zerowhite2286 I'm glad you love your fireplace and use it. That's great. Since you do-- sure. Make it a focal point and arrange around it, and move your TV off to the side. I have had my house > 20 years, have three fireplaces, and I never use them. I don't think two of my fireplaces are up to code because they don't have a large protective flooring surface in front of them; this could be fixed, but why give myself something more to work around? I'm not going to use them. I have friends that put candelabras in their fireplaces with LED candles since the fireplaces are there and they've never used them. Most people I know treat it as an inconvenience that renders all or part of a wall unusable but the room still must be arranged in a way that centers around that inconvenience. In houses/apartments where fireplaces were the main form of heating, it made perfect sense to make them beautiful and center the room around them. For most of us, they aren't that anymore, and it strikes me as crazy that new builds have fireplaces (even if that means having a fake fireplace that gives off no heat), that these are the focal point of the room, and that TVs people actually use daily are often relegated to weird positions (or the furniture is put in positions where it's difficult to watch the TV) just to accommodate the fireplace. I don't think TVs are beautiful, honestly, but I wonder why unused fireplaces are the focal point of so many modern living and family rooms, and why all of the solutions to the problem never seem to ask whether homeowners even use the fireplaces-- it's taken for granted that they must and that they're a desirable feature.

I'm remodeling my house and adding a fireplace. It will be gas, so I'll be able to turn it on and off with a remote control. I can't wait; I think a fireplace adds so much ambience to a room. Wood burning fireplaces are just too messy and difficult to use I think.

@@Geronimo2Fly I hope you love it and you end up using it. One of my wood-burning fireplaces is in the library-- which has two walls of wood shelves original to the house. It's one of the ones that has no hearth or non-flammable surround on the floor (room was originally carpeted). I have to wonder who thought this was a smart combination.

I've used one for years and am trying to get one ready for use in the old house I bought this year. It is probably more common among rural people with chain saws. Lol

If you have a 75" tv, it has to be mounted with NO exposed wires.

I’ve definitely covered many of the points here in various other videos and in different manners. But always good to highlight them in more specific situations (living room in this case)

UNITS: 😵‍💫You are based in Australia; all but one country in the rest of world also use metric units, yet your decision is to give everything in...... Imperial 😀 Favouring the American audience?

I'm pretty sure I put the units in metric in the video text/animation for those with precise measurement (artwork height, rug width, etc). Included both so it's easy to understand for everyone.

@@reynardlowell Sorry. Comment was meant to be ironic in tone. But may I suggest we should let the single country that uses Imperial read the text and there rest of the world have it live in the commentary? (Or are you wanting to actively favour an American audience).

European and Aussie and Asian math education is so good your populations can easily convert from Imperial to metric. I am an American and TRUST ME, Americans CAN NOT convert from metric to Imperial. 😂😂😂
