OK, to be fair, I have a degree in interior architecture and have been working with interior design for years so I'm pretty well versed in various design and furniture styles. I have it in my head the general vibe, colors and layout of where I'm going when developing a space. While mood boards and space plans are effective ways for professional designers to communicate their ideas to clients, and space plans work really well to assist designers in purchasing widely available retail items that fit the space, I don't believe the average person will benefit from these tools. As someone who mostly buys 2nd hand, I find mood boards and space planning on paper to be useless. Personally, I get a general idea of color and styles I like, then I hit the thrift shops for the treasure hunt. I would NEVER be able to finish a space if I attempted to find items that look like my initial ideas and I would also end up in massive debt if I purchased off the shelf readily available items. My designs always start with a major piece of furniture like a couch or a rug I've already acquired, then I look for the other things that work with that piece to fill the room. It's important to stick to cohesive colors, which may or may not be the colors you started with. It depends on what you find. I often find something not quite right but I buy it anyway if I like it well enough. My designs evolve in terms of color, style, even layout, as I acquire new pieces. The new pieces often inspire shifts in the design. This is where it's important to have a good eye for what works together regardless of style and to be willing to throw out the space plan and instead physically move stuff around until you find what works. It's more about cohesiveness, proportion and how it looks once you get it into the room. You've gotta be willing to tweak. Despite measuring carefully before hitting the 2nd hand shops, sometimes a piece doesn't work where I intended to use it, so it ends up somewhere entirely different. Because of a cohesive color palette, I'm able to use pieces in different rooms and they still work. Example: I bought a club chair for my office only to find it was too wide for the narrow hallway leading to the office. It now perfectly graces my living room. The truth about design is that most of it is about feeling your way through it. If you're going to venture beyond neutrals and utterly predictable layouts, you're going to make mistakes. Even professional designers make mistakes! Sometimes those mistakes can be happy accidents if you know how to make lemonade from lemons. While I'm sure the step by step process outlined in this video is intended to help the average person avoid design mistakes, it comes from a place of having been trained to be a "professional". Sorry to say, the "professional" design process is very different from hands on DIY with a strict budget.

Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! It's fascinating to hear how your approach to design evolves organically and is driven by the unique pieces you find. Your method highlights the creativity and adaptability that go into making a space truly personal. I appreciate your insights and agree that design is very much about feeling your way through and making things work as you go. Happy treasure hunting!
