As a live sound engineer transitioning our church to DAW mixing for our online audience, thank you for putting out this and all the previous videos enlightening us on mixing live. This is super helpful, and I love how what you've done in 10mins sounds like. thanks a bunch bro 👊

Andrew. Great mix. Especially love the Low End and the snare. Great used of wet effects too. I hope to work with you on some projects in the future.

The benefits I see in doing something like a 10-minute pass at the drums is: 1) To allow your first inclinations to guide the initial process and avoid overthinking or falling into any rabbit holes. I usually do this when I’m doing the rough mix after all the pre-mix work is done. And I’ve found it can be a good way to start and orient oneself to the various aspects of the mix which need consideration without beginning to lose perspective from listening for too long. 2) Better understand your habits and tendencies when it comes to mixing. If you have to do it quickly, then you’re going with the familiar most likely. So to a quick mix and then immediately review and analyze what you did can be a good way to ID what works and what doesn’t work in terms of default processes. Thanks for the thought-provoking video. Doing such a thing takes courage and the willingness to be vulnerable in a space where ppl are seeking “expert” guidance.

You gated out all the ghost notes, practically ruin the play...

dude he did it in like 10 min... I'm sure if he was mixing for reals he would have fixed that. (he literally says at the end, "i'm not sure I hated that correctly"

I'm sorry Andrew, but too much low end on everything, too much useless reverbs, and you forgot to invert the phase on snare bottom as well. The real deal is how you manage the low mid's and mids, and you actually took the "shortcut" by getting rid of them and not giving a damn about them just for "glueing" the drums, but it's a pretty bad and false impression only to consider it. This kind of 'mixing' is too ancient for these modern days without a proper mixing console where sonically works better with these kinds of eqs, and back in the days of analog sound engineers had proper reverbs: real plates, real chambers, real rooms, 480L, H3000, etc. and all that it sounded and behaved 23492904 times better and much more musically than our plugins today - unfortunetly. The conclusion: Yeah, if you have a bad recording, you NEED to THINK (not overthink) about what are the odds for making them better and organically as possible. If there is no way to mix what you have, you need to use samples for enhancements and for that you need to look and check lots of them so it can be actually be useable and to preserve the style/production of that song - which here is a totally another discussion. So what you did here needs to have a diferent approach; like how improve your go-to methods objectively/tehnically, have to achieve them as quickly as possible (the do's and don'ts), and how to prepare the drum stems for mixing in 10 minutes (phasing issues, allingments, samples etc) Sorry for being in-your-face about this, but they are a lot's of charlatans in this world of sound engineering :). Cheers, Andrew!

I love that people feel as though they have a right to say what others “need” to do. I love the condescension that KZfaq has brought to our society. And I love people who harshly criticize others without showing any of their precious work. In short, way to go Andrew - that was amazing in the time you allotted yourself and I picked up a few things I’ll try to see if I like them in my process.

@@ElijahBarrientos for what purpose? better to make a song in 10 minutes or a 10 minutes song.

@@angusica11 the purpose would be to see you apply what you commented earlier, I think it would be very interesting and beneficial to the pro audio community :) And sure make a song in 10 min could be a dope video too! But that’s not this video. This video is about trying to get a drum mix in 10 minutes.

i'm not here to tell "i do this better than you" type of crap :), BUT this is a POINTLESS challenge and waste of time. Yes, this is good just for you to tell yourself once in a while if your to-go's are objectively correct or not. Sound Engineering, including music by itself, is exact mathematics with law physics included. It's not rocket science, but not for everyone either. SO! This isn't a hate speech, as i said in my previous comment, this is just a point of view. MY point of view with 20 years of experience :). And as long this comment section is allowed, everyone can say ANYTHING. Andrew, i'm sorry if i hurt your feelings. This is NOT my intention! I hope you see this with a open mind - kinda like Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter situation. If not, please delete these comments! Thank you!.
