Federer was really the Rolls Royce of tennis. Everything he does, from serve till the winner he looks like a hawk gliding smoothly yet extremely swiftly towards its prey. You could argue that Rafa has a better reach or that Djoker is more aggressive but no one brings the class to the court which he had. The elegance that he possessed is unmatched.

Federer makes subtle changes in his grip whenever he needs to switch between forehands and backhands. Lately, because he is slowing down, he hasnt been getting enough time to change grip when going for his forehands. Thats why he has been hitting out often with his forehands.
@srinitaaigaura

@@VinodKumar-wo3tx That and I think Fed's forehand is too dependent on his footwork. In his prime he used to be one step ahead of the ball all the time. Now a days he's often late. And he does struggle with deep low balls. But honestly he hits too many errors on the forehand now. It's an eyesore.

I feel hat these backhand shots are a result of years of continuous practice of not just the stroke, but the penetration, variety of angles, covering all corners of the court. Fed is one player who has used almost the entire opponents court in his shot making. Most other players rarely go for the lines and angles, even someone like Djokovic doesnt do it very often. Most are content with speed and spin and the occasional volley/drop shot.

Perhaps the reason why his backhand seems more resilient than many other one handers is both its versatility and adaptability. Aside from the variety of shots he hits with it, look at how many of these were abbreviated backhands. So many other one handers seem to just try to power through, and don’t put enough emphasis on placement. It’s probably why I prefer Federer’s one hander over all the other one handers. In terms of competitive versatility, his, in my opinion, is currently the best.

There's a misconception that Federer backhand was bad. Not on low bouncing courts. Federer main issue in his career was the high bouncing backhand he faced when playing Nadal high topspin forehand. When Federer fixes that (off clay), it's hard for anyone to beat him. 2017 Federer was short lived with that backhand on the rise for only three tournaments at AO, IW, Miami, and Shanghai. He has shown flashes of that backhand in his peak but couldn't maintain it his whole career. That's why he struggled on clay and high bouncing courts on hard courts because of this.

What is absolutely key to Fed's success on his backhand (as well as his forehand) is the way he can hit balls on the rise, right off (or in front of) the baseline. It takes time away from his opponents and does not allow them to "cheat" to one side or the other. That is why many of his opponents state that Fed is the most difficult to play against. They often say that he "constantly pressures you, all the time." No one else in the world can consistently hit balls (and winners!) on the rise like Fed can. No one. His timing and strength are simply incredible.

Federer is top notch in comparison to SAMPRAS in every aspects dedication, love for the game & above all passion. The day he retires fans will certainly miss his play.

Everyone said in the juniors Federer had no idea how to hit a one hander. Tommy Haas would beat him pretty handily. No one at that time thought he'd amount to anything. Just look where he is now. #GOAT

Some would debate that there are better one handed backhands in the game, but there is no debating that Federers is the most beautiful back hand tennis has ever seen

Federer's backhand has always been a weakness. Nadal utilised it. The Djokovic. If you carefully observe the rallies, Djokovic tries to play into the backhand of Federer during long exchanges before pulling the trigger.
