My dad was the fueler for Tag. He said he thought he witnessed two deaths when Tag and Zinardi hit. He watched Greg Moore die just two years earlier at Fontana when he was Greg’s fueler. I couldn’t imagine what he felt like when he thought that he might lose another driver.

It's always wild to me that my videos can bring people who have very close ties to the people affected by the events in my videos. That must have been very tough for your dad to be a part of, and I can't even imagine what he felt like. I appreciate the comment Will, and you sharing this.

Fortunately no one was killed in the Tagliani / Zanardi incident in Germany. However Alex Zanardi suffered severe injuries to his legs. Very sad. The Greg Moore crash is just painful to watch. It was immediately clear that you just watched somebody die.

You briefly mentioned Dr Steven Olvey. Between him and Dr. Terry Tramel, Dr Sid Watkins and even Dr. Jerry Punch (sometimes swapping the broadcast mic for medical kit) the number of drivers alive today directly or indirectly because of these 4 men is incredible.

I was sitting in the infield stands in turn 1 of the '95 Indy 500 when Stan Fox had his horrible crash. I distinctly remember seeing his car in the air, backwards, and the nose ripped off. It was like slow motion. I'll never forget the sound of the car hitting the wall, it sounding like popping a huge balloon. That was the first auto racing wreck I ever saw in person. I simply couldn't comprehend the incredible savagery of it at the time.

Alas in 2020, Alex Zanadi once again found himself fighting for his life after being involved in an accident with a truck while practicing for a hand cycle race in Italy He suffered severe and life threatening head injuries and spent several months in hospital, he still has a very long road to recovery ahead of him

Indeed, it is very sad. I original had all the information about his bike accident too, but I ended up cutting it out of the final video. I elected to put more emphases on a positive note and highlight his 13 lap return to Germany. Otherwise it was just too depressing.

I can think of quite a few that would be worthy of that list such as Michael Waltrip's crash at Bristol in 1990, Ryan Newman at Daytona in 2020, Steve Grissom at Atlanta in 1997, Mike Harmon at Bristol in 2006, Bobby Allison at Talladega in 1987 (the wreck that led to the introduction of the restrictor plate), Davey Allison at Pocono in 1992, Rusty Wallace at both Daytona & Talladega in 1993 & Steve Park at Atlanta in 1998, Sonoma in 1999 & Pocono in 2002.

@@deborahchesser7375 Scary for sure. Reminded me of the '73 Indy 500 first lap. Ugly crash at the start of the race with Salt Walther upside down with legs totally exposed, toes face down on the track. That was a terrible year for Indy. Art Pollard gets killed qualifying and after about 3 days of rain delays trying to get the race in, Swede Savage has one of the worst crashes Indy's ever seen. He died a few weeks later in the hospital by a bad blood transfusion if I remember correctly. A worker at the track was also hit by a rescue truck and was killed instantly. Worst year Indy had since the '30's. BTW, I was sitting in the SE Vista in turn two and saw the Stan Fox crash. It was frightening. You knew it was serious as to the amount of time it took to get him out of his car. (sorry, didn't mean to write a book. Indy has been close to me since just a kid when I first saw the time trials in 1959. Rodger Ward won that year. Man I must be getting old......ha.)

It's not the crash that kills it's the sudden stop. The cars have crumble zones, the point you go off the track (hopefully) also haves some "give" which helps to absorb the impact speed. nevertheless, it's a miracle some drivers escape with their lives.

I blame Wickens crash indirectly on the media. I watched the pre-race coverage. I won't name the announcer because he didn't do anything wrong. He was just doing his job, going through the top 10s and prognosticating who would win it and what they had to do. When he came to Wickens, "as I remember" he said that he needs to be more aggressive and not giving way to other drivers. I had been following, as many of us were, Robert Wickens talents. It seemed to me he was content to learn his craft one race at a time. Yet, to finish first, one must first finish. What do you think?

From 1911 to 2000, the 230 mph qualifying record at Indy, was eclipsed 3 times.. From 2000 to 2023, it has been eclipsed 7 times.. Try again, remember when... P.S. The fact they were hitting 245 mph, back when YOU were watching, had absolutely nothing to do with YOU... *cue sad Price is Right jingle

You forgot to talk about the horrendous accidents Zanarddi had after the Indy accident. He had other accidents that almost killed him again.

I actually originally did have it in the video. He's currently still recovering from the hand bike truck accident that happened a few years ago. I ended up cutting it out to end on a more positive note of him completing the last 13 laps.

Unfortunately the Rio de Janeiro's racetrack doesn't exist anymore. It was demolished in order to build the Olympic Park for 2016 Summer Olympics Games. Since 2016, Rio de Janeiro is lacking of having a racetrack properly speaking.

Stan Fox (Fuchs) is a second cousin of mine from my hometown of Janesville, WI. I was home on leave and at the racetrack when you got in that accident that shared off the front of the car with his legs exposed some of the information you stayed in here is wrong

I've said this before and I will say it again, it makes absolutely no sense why they would design a track that has such a large elevation change like you see on the #7 crash on this list. As fast as these cars go, having blind spots such as that is just a fatality or serious injury waiting to happen.
@chrisallison4175
@chrisallison4175 Жыл бұрын
Many of these older tracks were not designed or built to any particular racing series or vehicle. They have raced everything on wheels at Sears Point. Lots of motorcycles in the 70's.
@jeremybr2020
@jeremybr2020 Жыл бұрын
@@chrisallison4175 That may be true, but I can't think of any sort of racing where a blind spot caused by a steep elevation change, is a good idea.

good thing indy car add the tether thing to pervent wheels flying off like that anymore. sarah fisher or how ever you spell her name, could have flung a tire into the stands like what has happened before

Unfortunately he was involved in a few. Not always his fault though. But I must say, he has to take a huge responsibility for the Wickens crash. Robert was on the inside all the way down the straight and he didn't leave him room.

It is hard to argue against it being the worst crash of all time. But Gordon died instantly. I didn't want to include any fatalities in these videos.
@chrisallison4175
@chrisallison4175 Жыл бұрын
There are lots of worse crashes... Jeff Krosnoff in Toronto, Greg Moore in Fontana, Dan Wheldon in Las Vegas, etc. The reason they were not shown was because the end result was a driver fatality. The video creator chose to not include fatalities in this video. I think that's the right call.

It really is a cursed place. Justin Wilson died there in IndyCar. In NASCAR Bobby Allison's career ended there. Jimmie Johnson hasn't won a points paying race since a wreck there. Several other big accidents over the years involving Dale Earnhardt, Davey Allison, Jeff Gordon, Elliott Sadler, etc. We even have the 8 mile lightning policy in place today because of a fan who was struck and killed there.
