An increasingly tetchy battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in the closing laps of F1's Austrian Grand Prix eventually resulted in the two friends colliding, costing both a shot at victory at the Red Bull Ring.
Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw take a look at the fallout from the incident, including how the drivers' views differed, a hard-hitting opinion from McLaren team boss Andrea Stella, plus what it's likely to mean for how Verstappen and Norris race each other in the future, and their off-track friendship.

You can’t be friends on track, friendship is on hold once the race begins until it ends. To be the best you can’t assume your friend will give you any quarter in wheel-to-wheel racing. Lando has now been introduced to the real Max Verstappen, with his if I can’t win then you won’t either mentality despite being so far ahead in the championship, he could just take the 2nd place and go again next week but no he has to ruin his and his rivals race.

@@ghfsd786fa yeah, I think if we have to pick 1 person, Max is at fault here since forcing someone so wide they have to turn in with their outside wheel on a kerb isnt the most clean move. But at the same time it was an overtake for P1 in the closing stages of the race, so 10 seconds penalty seems a bit harsh. But Lando also has to learn to keep his cool in these situations. I feel like he can become a bit desperate in the chase for a win and take unnecessary risks which hurt him in the long run. Agree, but if it hadn't been for the crash, he'd have been lapped by Verstappen - he finished 54s behind Russell, who was 13s behind before the crash. Very simply put, if Max doesn't hit Norris, there would never have been a penalty for "forcing another driver off the track" because there was TONS of space for Norris. Norris took them both off track before the accident, and got no penalty for it, even though it VERY clearly should be based on precedent. The only reason Max got a penalty was because a collision occurred, and the reason it looked so weird is because usually we see Max and Lewis do this to each other and the driver on the outside is smart enough to turn with it. They just have to admit that they don't penalize actual driving, they penalize the outcomes.

Divebombs are OK if they are done right, Landos ones where quite desperate. He was going in two hot on two occasions, and in the first instance when he accused Max on moving under braking he waited too long to jump on the inside and gave Max the excuse to stay on the racing line. Lando could still commit to that and Max would probably give him enough space but Lando would miss the apex and Max would take the place back on the exit of that turn. The attempt which lead to collision was also Lando not taking the space Max left him on the outside. The 10s penalty for Max ws given without much investigation since they new it will have no effect on his result. If they bumped wheels and continued the fight I doubt there would be any decision taken.

This is how Verstappen drives. He settled down a bit since he first appeared in F1, but more than that other drivers simply learned to give him room in order to avoid crashing. Even Lewis would tend to give way to him because Lewis understood that it wasn’t worth the risk and he didn’t have to battle that hard with Max - until he did. As soon as Louis stopped being willing to simply give way, they started coming together. We haven’t really seen it again since 2021 because Max hasn’t really had to race anybody due to that car being so dominant. The more he has to fight, the more we are going to see collisions - because, as Norris just learned, Max doesn’t fight cleanly, and the stewards rarely intervene when he does things like moving under braking. I feel badly for Norris - He was trying to be respectful, and he really didn’t expect Max to pull the sort of things on him that he had pulled on Lewis. If he was travelling on Max’s plane this weekend, that’s going to be a very uncomfortable trip. And Norris is going to have to learn to fight fire with fire. If you want to beat Max in anything approaching equal machinery, you have to be willing to race like he does, or he will steamroll over you.

Lando completely shot through the turn two laps before and should have thanked Max over the radio for not ending their race then and there. Max is mega aggressive and should tone it down a little, but the way Lando tried to overtake him was amateur like. You can’t dive bomb from 50 m back and expect the guy in front to give up P1 and wish you a pleasant day. He should have taken a different line and go for the overtake in Turn 5. That would have made Max unable to counter him anyway. I think it’s a poor showing from both guys and knowing Max this will keep happening as well. Lando is a fantastic driver that clearly gained some pace and understanding of how to use his tyres, but he doesn’t have the same skill level and decisiveness when it comes to overtaking. He’s just not very good at it and he’s trying to overtake the hottest head F1 has seen since Michael Schumacher. He needs to be smarter

Max was smart by saying of course we wil talk it out but he first has to watch back the replay. It is also short sighted because of what happened before the incident. First Lando dive bombs, goes off track, also forces Max off track and then the incident happens. Lando was also not really correct in the duel. Then looking back at the duels between Max and Lewis. Max was then blamed for dive bombing, got cut by Lewis in similar ways. Back then it was Max his fault by the British media and fans. Now Lando does this to Max and now it still is Max his fault. In my opinion this is being blown up again by Lando his emotional reaction and the British media and fans.
@valerierodger
@valerierodger 2 күн бұрын
LOL Lando wasn’t dive bombing when this incident happened. It’s Max’s tactic of give way or we’ll crash which has always been criticized, and that is exactly what he pulled today. Very disappointing, as it puts a very unsportsmanlike end to what was a great battle.
@larsdijker7208
@larsdijker7208 17 сағат бұрын
@@valerierodger Peter Windsor explained it perfectly. The DRS is too blame. Alex Brundle also was absolutely spot on that the FIA penalizes the outcome then the action. Many cars in that corner collided but no punctures and no penalties. Max gets 10 sec because of the outcome. Other drivers already should have gotten penalties because of similar actions. The other point Max is going into a corner. He might have looked in his mirror but then needs to focus on the corner and exit. He leaves a cars width or at least he thought he did and then Lando with his DRS drops the car on Max his outside. Peter Windsor said it’s the fault of DRS but after that more Lando his wrong judgement then Max his fault. The other thing he mentioned the rules don’t make sense because every driver goes in and out of the corner differently. They all have a different apex. Peter Windsor is always great because of his neutral point of view. He said this is part of racing if you don’t like it go watch waterpolo. Max or any other driver will not open the door and say sorry I’n in the way I will leave a lot of space so you can overtake me. They will always defend their racing lines. It was not the smartest overtake attempt from Lando. In my opinion there was a lot of frustration in his attempts and he kept failing. He tried to force it too much. At the end it was RB’s own mistakes they put Max in this situation that Lando was able to come back.

2021 vibes about max' driving which isnt good and Norris' lunges were a bit too much. In the end they both paid the price. I think one aspect is also that the +5s verdict for Norris was so slow to come. I think if the penalty came earlier, it wouldve made the battle a little different with max maybe not defending so hard or norris realising he need to pass more definitely. The stewards were really waffling.

100% what Stella said. Max literally violated the "Verstappen rule." The penalty for Norris was ridiculous: track limits for .5 sec = 5 sec penalty, vs. taking another driver out of the race = 10 seconds. Needs to be variable penalty up to 30 seconds if you take someone out. Lap after lap Max was doing things on over over the line: moving after the other driver commits, etc. And yes, this never was fully handled after the Lewis comings together, and only now has Max really had any competition years later.

The difference between a Verstappen 'divebomb' is that he does it once and makes it stick. Other drivers desperately try it multiple times and don't make it stick. The onboard shows Max wasn't even aware Norris was there, he was concentrating on his turn at that point. That is of course an error on Max's part. But equally, I cannot understand why Norris wouldn't react to such a slow squeeze like that, which happens a lot in every race. Instead he preferred to just let the contact happen, and then earn himself a DNF. Even in this race, Ocon and I think one other racer squeezed someone in that corner in a similar fashion, and there was no penalty or histrionics about dangerous driving.

Civil discourse is almost dead in the F1 fandom, and if it isn't then it only really thrives in the smallest niche pockets of the internet. The heat from the AMG v.
