9 Years of Shadows is so good; some elements took me a little while to get used to, but once I did, I found the movement to be extremely fluid. I don't remember if I plugged this one in the last video, but Outland is an excellent Platventure that does the Ikaruga thing, too; it starts off a little dull, but by the end, it's pretty intense and engaging.

Animal Well is a recent good one. I've been playing this genre for fifteen years and this game went straight to the S-tier. Contender for my game of the year so far.

Animal Well easily belongs in the top tier of Metroidvania games along with being a top tier Knowledge game (like Outer Wilds or Tunic).

My favorites are Aeterna Noctis, Astalon tears of the earth, Blasphemous 1 and 2, Nine Sols. Plus the obvious ones like hollow knight and Axiom Verge.

9 years of shadow is not that good. if anything, "Afterimage" should have taken the spot instead, if you are a solid metroidvania fan then Afterimage is toptier

I have played Afterimage, it's rather good but not top tier in my opinion. If I were rating it on IDOIG, I'd give it a Silver Genie. So I'd place it in an upper B or lower A tier and this list is for games I personally consider to be S tier or Golden Genie level games. I do plan on featuring Afterimage in a future metroidvania recommendation list, just not in this subseries focusing on games in the genre that I consider to be absolute essentials. We'll just have to disagree about 9 Years of Shadows. It's okay to disagree, there is a lot of subjectivity in how enjoyable a game is to an individual player.

Nice opinion. Just like the video. The videos creators opinion. Weird how it's not the same as yours. Oh wait. It's not weird at all. Personally, I loved Ghost Song. The atmosphere. The music. The ambience. The lack of story is a reason why the game is good. You don't know where your character came from. Who your character is. Why you're there. But alas, your opinion and others opinion will differ. Agree to disagree.

Chances are I probably have very different taste in metroidvanias than you, only I have the decency and maturity to not act out in hostility and call your taste shit. It is possible to share your personal favorites in a comment and express a difference of opinion without being rude about it. I would actually be interested in you sharing more of your favorite metroidvanias because I enjoy it when other gamers share their favorite games even if they are different from my own, but a more civil tone would be appreciated if you decide to do so. I haven't played Aquaria or Minishoot Adventures, but I love the rest of your games on your list and I even included Timespinner on my previous list of essential indie metroidvanias. For clarity, I wasn't upset with your comment, my response was more to screen what kind of commenter you are because we get some harshly worded comments sometimes. If I respond with something like pointing out that the tone of the comment was rude but that I'd genuinely like to discuss this topic in a civil tone, then the trolls will reveal themselves by either responding harshly or not responding at all and those who are open to actually discussing games will give a response along the lines of yours. When the communication is just text without any context clues like tone of voice or body language, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate between someone stating a a genuine opinion in language that can come off as being abrasive and someone who is just being a contrarian troll. We're totally okay with disagreement and discussing disagreements here at IDOIG, we just have to figure out who wants to genuinely discuss a difference of opinion and who is just trying to get a rise out of people for the sake of trolling.

@@ophidianmind333 Try Aquaria...its a beautiful game...simple but great story, beautiful OST and voice acting and a beautiful big world, and its a simple metroidvania from the old days. They dont make them like that anymore. 😁🫡
