10 most beautiful castles in Scotland

Scottish castles are rugged and stark. There is no fairy tale quality about them, but visitors can conjure up visions of knights in shining armor who fought the good fight for their clan and country. Scottish castles were built mostly for defense and frequently sit atop cliffs overlooking lochs and ocean, making them seemingly impregnable. These stone structures today evoke a sense of grace and peace. They are awe-inspiring, to say the least.

Every individual picture is a dramatic combination of Scotland's ever-changeable weather, it's cold water, still or rushing, and fascinating defensive architecture, ancient or new. A marvelous, rugged, challenging country.

I was thinking the same. This is a highly subjective list. Dalquharran Castle is a lot more attractive than many of the ruins in this list. It's stone structure is largely intact.

I'm surprised Kisimul Castle wasn't on the list. The only Scottish castle that's built in the sea on a rocky outlet with a beautiful scenery with the sea of the Atlantic ocean and the hill's on the other side.

Large exterior windows on the ground floor show some of those to be a manor or palace, not a castle designed for defense.

Actually Dunottar castle is very similar to Dunluce castle in Northern Ireland.

Love the landscape in Scotland. The castles, however, are quite disappointing overall. No match for the castles in several other countries like e.g. Germany.

I have no idea why they connected the word beautiful with any of these scottish castles. Have a look at our castles in Francais, spain germany. You could build better lego castles than those things in scotland

I been to france 100 of times the best castle there is foix castle the rest are prity shit and for spain if i wanted to see fat brits i would stay at home but germany is beautiful
