So in May of this year (2020) the US Marines announced they will not be using the Abrams , or any MBT from the date on. There will not be a main battle tank in the Marine Corps , all tank divisions are being disbanded and associated operators , specialists will need to move to another area . I HATE the idea! Russia, China, Notth Korea are all developing the next gen MBT and we are Eliminating the tank!! Why are we putting billions into the M1A3 if the end thought is the MBT isn’t going to be a big player in futur wars makes sense to a degree but an invading Russia with their amazing tanks when we don’t have any will be nerve racking. The US Army also announced they will be reducing their total number of tanks and personal by 25% with a plan to retire another 25% of the Abrams by 2023! Some of the concerns and points I understand , the cost of a new Abrams when it comes out will be redicioous! They believe the money could be much better used in a better way. So the main contracts that the entire world was trying to get in on to hopefully get in the top 3 , were #1 an unmanned much smaller tank . It needed to be drive by wire and will have the same battlefield sensor suite that all our vehicles are or have. That means it will be piloted by a crew of 2 anywhere in the world, a weapons operated and a driver but a single operator is allowed. The drive by wire and sensor suite also shows their planning for it to be on the list of AI operated weapons. The tank would be 1/3 the size of an Abrams, and 1/10th the weight. Must be rubber tracked , can be gas or diesel operated but must be able to operate 100% electric . (Which clearly shows our government is going all in on electric for weaponss) obviously would have an autoloader, must be modular with a cannon turret, heavy machine gun, precision long range , and a air defense module. Essentially they want a little tank that u can swap the turrets on for whatever’s needed. One of the 3 finalists talked about how theirs when not in combat use can be with the push of a button put into a ambulance mode that can access a futur list of injured military in battle etc that need transport where helicopters can’t reach because of enemy fire . The system uses satellite nav , a suite of info on vehicle physics and a numbers of cameras all around. The computer which they didn’t say was AI so maybe jsut a self driving program? All branches of our military have an agreed requirement for all military vehicles by 2025 to be fly /drove by wire, drones, jets, vehicles, go fast assault boats etc, it would need to have several reinforced hardoints preferable wings where any number of different mission packages. As far as I am concerned, if Oshkosh is the designer and maker of the next vehicle we are in good shape. I actually think that the Oshkosh has already raced the truck that will join the military in a long 24 hour desert race and done fairly well in completing the race.
