Of these ten, my favorites are Cary Grant, and James Stewart, with Humphrey Bogart, Spencer Tracy, Henry Fonda, and Marlon Brando as my next favorites on the list. Also, I have to agree with the comments regarding the comparison of Bogart to Tom Cruise...there is no comparison...thats like comparing Bogart as an orange to Cruise who is one rotten apple (imo) Finally, when it comes to Marlon Brando, I was pleased to see the director of the Guys and Dolls movie chose to let Marlon use his own singing voice rather than overdubbing another singer, it gave a more natural authentic quality to Marlon's portrayal of Skye Masterson imo. 🙂

First of all I don’t agree with all these but I just had to say you are Absolutely Wrong to compare Bogey and Tom Cruise. Mr. Cruise isn’t half the actor Bogey was and I don’t believe half the man either. I lived in another time than most of these men but I had to say Tom Cruise is not and should not be compared to any of these men as I see it. Also, where are the women? Status of actors and most respected are two different matters. Many would argue that Brando was not that "respected." There are countless stories of him not knowing his lines, holding up production and running up budgets. Tony Dow told of seeing him on a set at Universal and how disappointed he was to see Brando struggling with his lines. The 1962 remake of MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY was one of those examples that nearly bankrupted the studio. Chaplain is another actor more of Status than respect due to the controversy of his personal life. It would be more accurate to name Chaplin as the grandfather of silent film comedy, not the Silent Film era. That honor belongs to D.W. Griffith who established film grammar and created the American feature film.

I think Stewart has surpassed the others in the esteem of the wider public at this point. The traditional pick was always Spencer tracy. Cruise is a lightweight in this company. Tom Hanks is laughable at this level. Jimmy Cagney is the greater movie actor but has fallen of in public knowledge and esteem. Edward G. Robinson may be the finest of all screen actors.
@BlueSaphire70
@BlueSaphire70 Ай бұрын
Well, I really like Gene Kelly and think he was a superb dancer, but he should not be on a list made up of strictly actors. Charlie Chaplin is mostly of the silent era and should be judged with his peers, like Rudolf Valentino and John Gilbert. I think this list of old-time respected actors should include Gregory Peck, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, and Robert Mitchum. If we are to include foreign actors, then we should add David Niven, Laurence Olivier, Robert Donat, James Mason, and Rex Harrison. These actors were born between 1895 (Valentino) and 1917 (Mitchum). Brando was born in 1924 and he seems a bit too modern for the group, especially with his method acting. Brando should be in a group with Paul Newman, Jack Lemmon, William Holden, and James Dean. It's really hard to make a list like this because each era has its renowned and respected actors who have different styles and attraction. That being said, I really enjoyed going down memory lane and revisiting the lives and careers of all these unquestionably great actors.

Weird list. Some of it I agree with, Brando was a great actor indeed. Chaplin was also one of the best, most creative and influential. But please, Bing Crosby was a dancer, not much of an actor. Most of these pple, Bogey especially, Cary Grant, Clark Gable were mainly stars, they played themselves. And how on earth could you leave out Olivier who was and still is considered the greatest Actor of all. He had a huge range. In many films, you don't even recognise him.But the biggest omission, to my mind, is Charles Laughton, a great, great actor, maybe even greater than Olivier, bc more natural. He could play anything, make you laugh out loud,make you hate him he played such a vile villain, or he could break yr heart. He was homely and fat, but he could act circles around the "pretty boys."Daniel Day-Lewis, probably the greatest actor of today said of him, 'He was probably the greatest film actor who came from the golden age of Hollywood."

One thing I don't understand is that why all of them are from 1940s, 50s and 60s or 70s. Why no one is there from recent years, if not decades ? Is it that actors from later years are not qualified to be great actors ? I do agree actors such as Brando, Fonda and may be a couple of others. But I would add Gregory Peck, Tom Hanks, Anthony Hopkins, Jack Nicholson and these are fantastic actors. Also, great actors listed here are mostly leading men. Why not character actors ? Actor is an actor, irrespective of whether he or she is leading man/woman, character actor, villian etc.

I’m puzzled by your use of the word “respected”. Was it respect for their talent or accomplishments? When you bill them as the “most respected actors”, you’re implying the whole person. Your top two picks were two of the most hated men by many of their colleagues. They showed mammoth portions of disrespect to many people who didn’t deserve it.They were known for throwing prima donna type tantrums on set belittling and humiliating other actors, often reducing them to tears. So, why “respect”?

@Fanfanbalibar The specific names escape me for Charlie Chaplin, but you can find them on other KZfaq channels. As for Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire discovered Debbie Reynolds on the set of “Singing in the Rain” sobbing because of several outbursts. She was sure that she could never perform up to his standard and was hoping to leave the picture, and possibly show business itself; it was early in her career. He consoled her and assured her that she did have the necessary talent and he would be glad to work with her to “show her the ropes” and restore her confidence.

This list is hardly the most respected actors. It's more like the best known actors from the Golden age of Hollywood. Marlon Brando wasn't a very nice man and his method acting turned people off. This is not my opinion. There's plenty of videos where you find his name on a list of the hardest actors to work with. Not to mention Charlie Chaplin. He was no doubt one of the most famous but respected.... I found his name on more than one e list of famous artists with dark secrets. Also where is Fred Aster and Gary Cooper...? Or the Duke John Waine?
