I once heard that the Uwe Boll movies are intentionally bad because he took advantage of a tax loophole in Germany tax law. Creating an absolutely terrible movie that bombed at the box office was actually very profitable for him. That loophole has since been closed.

I was always curious how the pitch for Highlander II: The Quickening got approved. Like, just for a minute, look at the studio. Highlander had developed a very devoted following, so I get wanting a sequel, but someone stood in front of an actual board of professionals and got "Aliens from the planet Zeist" approved, along with making Ramirez a magical fairy, complete with him going out again on what legit looks like something you'd expect out of a children's show.

Indeed. _Highlander 2: The Sickening_ should never have been made, but I heard that Russell Mulcahy had a clause in his directorial contract that obligated him to direct any sequel, should it be greenlighted. But then, the writers really didn't know where to go with the saga, once MacLeod had won the prize, and they turned it into a eco-preachy movie, with a backstory that made no G-d sense. Stupid, stupid studio execs. They're so greedy, they don't know when to leave well enough alone.

I even heard someone say that there was a director's cut of Highlander II that made it good but the studio wouldn't let it be released, which is like saying this dumpster fire isn't so bad if you throw a couple different pieces of garbage into it. That movie is so bad that the director and writers should have been sent to the Hague for trial. It's even harder to believe they made two more Highlander movies after that one.

I've loved Dreamcatcher for 20 years. I read the original novel and loved that (I'm aware that King was high as a kite while writing it), and I think Kasdan's film is better than its source. The 4 main actors (both in 2003 and 1983) bring the 4 main characters to life. "Jesus Christ Bananas, some fuckarow this is turning into!!!" It's a sorely underrated flick. Stealth wasn't a bad film, at least no more than anything Michael Bay puts out, it just had weaker actors and a weaker story than you would expect from something that cost that much, but you can certainly watch it without wanting to gouge out your eyes and eardrums. The problem with M Night and his movies are that he gained so much praise and fame for The Sixth Sense, because the twist was amazing and very well done.... But the twist wasn't the point of the movie. It just fit in and put the rest of the film into a different perspective (let's not pay too much attention to the fact that the other ghosts were all reliving their deaths over and over but Malcolm was just casually going about his job). But the film itself is okay, not spectacular but not bad either. The twist just elevates it. His other films are mostly just trash. And the dumb twists just make the trashiness worse.

The real problem is that M Night was widely considered a "genius" - Until he made a religiously-themed movie with Mel Gibson, _after which_ he was considered "trash" by everyone in Hollywood that had just loved his stuff before. It's a painful sequence of unlikely fortuitousness for the cardboard cut-out hero and incredible ineptitude by the baddies, who ironically embody many of Hubbard's traits. The book displays Hubbard's obsession with writing, being at least 500 pages too long, which is probably a result of temporal lobe epilepsy. There is nothing satirical about it, Hubbard just beats the reader over the head with his pet hates, particularly psychiatry. I'll still go to the mat for "Movie 43". Not only is it a perfect pot movie, but it really digs deep to put some of the most offensive humor ever devised on screen. The fact it even exists with this cast is kind of a miracle. And I don't care what anyone says, the bit with Chloe Moretz getting her period and leaving the blood trail on the wall is funny.

i don't think movie 43 should be on this list, as it was never really supposed to be taken seriously in any way. i saw it in theaters and it made me and my friends laugh quite a bit. but we also love immature humor.

@dhenderson18106 ай бұрын
The only time I laughed was when they were talking to real life twins at the start, and their stories against each other. They should have written the script based on their own experiences. It would have been funnier than Sandler in drag. Also, it showed me that now that Pacino won his Oscar, he stopped caring. Pacino's worst film (and he was playing himself).

My favorite Guy Ritchie movie? "Wrath of Man". Proof that stripping away all artifice can only benefit a filmmaker who has disappeared too far up his own butthole. That said, "Man From U.N.C.L.E." is hugely underrated, but, for a good reason. I'm pretty sure most of the people that could've gone to see it didn't know what it WAS. Original television series was barely a cult hit to begin with, got one TV movie in the 80s, "Return of the Man From U.N.C.L.E." and then languished for decades in obscurity. I think the only people that were aware of the original series are, like, HUGE fans of Robert Vaughn. The math did itself on that one.

Nah, Lady in the Water was good. Everyone just expected some crazy M Knight twist and people decided since that didn’t happen, it sucked. I’ll admit even I was disappointed on first viewing. But watching it a decade or so later with no expectations, it’s actually pretty good.
@frankt56824 ай бұрын
Lady in the water is one of my favorites, but no one will watch it with me. It's not your usual movie. It could have been just as well done by a no-name cast and a student organization. The story is nice. It's not intense, but it's kinda feel-good.

North (1994). It’s Rob Reiner directed comedy based on a children’s novel feature an All-Star cast including, to name a few Elijah Wood, Jason Alexander, Kathy Bates, and Bruce Willis. The movie is notable for its racial depiction of ethnic stereotypes, and adult themes which I can’t even describe this! This is also the movie that Roger Ebert famously stated he hated he used the word hated 10 times in his review.

It amazing how one person (Stephen King) can have so many highly revered books and have probably the most adaption attempts, but most of the projects adapted from his novels are flops. And the ones that were successful divert pretty heavily from the source material

I am still wondering how in the hell Movie 43 was made or got so many big actors. There's gotta be some money laundering scheme or something behind it where they all got paid big time or something.
@InertFoxtrot1176 ай бұрын
My understanding is that the Hugh Jackman and Kate Winslet scene was shot first, with the directors begging their agents and giving a good paycheck. After that, it took years of, "Hey, can you get 'big name here' to come be in our movie? It won't take long and then be in a movie with 'big name here'." Basically, agents agreed without looking into the movie and were sold on the idea of being in a movie with other big name actors. Then they were contractually obligated.

I noticed you didn't mention Postal. Uwe Boll's "style", for lack of a better term, at least wound up making a very faithful adaptation with that one.
