Overview by Professor Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Co-Chair, Advisory Committee of Future Earth, and Co-Chair of the Earth League.
The 10 New Insights in Climate Science:
1. Stabilizing at 1.5°C warming is still possible, but immediate and drastic global action is required
2. Rapid growth in methane and nitrous oxide emissions put us on track for 2.7°C warming
3. Megafires - climate change forces fire extremes to reach new dimensions with extreme impacts
4. Climate tipping elements incur high-impact risks
5. Global climate action must be just
6. Supporting household behaviour changes is a crucial but often overlooked opportunity for climate action
7. Political challenges impede the effectiveness of carbon pricing
8. Nature-based solutions are critical for the pathway to Paris - but look at the fine print
9. Building resilience of marine ecosystems is achievable by climate-adapted conservation and management, and global stewardship
10. Costs of climate change mitigation can be justified by the multiple immediate benefits to the health of humans and nature
---------
The UN Climate Change Conference (COP 26) in Glasgow, United Kingdom is a crucial opportunity to achieve pivotal, transformational change in global climate policy and action. It is a credibility test for global efforts to address climate change and it is where Parties must make considerable progress to reach consensus on issues they have been discussing for several years. COP 26 comes against the background of widespread, rapid and intensifying climate change impacts, which are already impacting every region on Earth. Also, COP 26 comes against the background of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the urgent need to build back better for present future generations to ensure a safe future.
The UNFCCC secretariat (UN Climate Change) is the United Nations entity tasked with supporting the global response to the threat of climate change. UNFCCC stands for United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The Convention has near universal membership (197 Parties) and is the parent treaty of the 2015 Paris Agreement. The main aim of the Paris Agreement is to keep the global average temperature rise this century as close as possible to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The UNFCCC is also the parent treaty of the 1997 Kyoto Protocol. The ultimate objective of all three agreements under the UNFCCC is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that will prevent dangerous human interference with the climate system, in a time frame which allows ecosystems to adapt naturally and enables sustainable development.

Great to have a brief summary, but sad that there are so many vested interests that we probably will fail to limit to temperature (and thus make ecological and societal collapse much more likely), even though it's so obvious what changes we need: stop new fossil fuel exploration from today, stop fossil fuel extraction by 2030, invest in high speed rail systems, restructure systems of incentives and subsidies, support populations in reducing their emissions through projects like home energy and insulation, ban all industrial fishing, implement some kind of incentive/disincentive system to push dietary change.

#6 is quite humorous considering that the vast majority of people attending COP26 are doing very little, if anything, to reduce their own carbon footprint in life. 400+ private jets taken to Glasgow plus thousands of individuals taking multiple flight connections to get there. I do drive less theses days, have a newer fuel and emissions efficient vehicle, recycle, reuse and compost. However, I will not be reducing my flying as I continue to travel the world purely for pleasure. I have no doubt in my mind at all that 99% of those attending Glasgow will continue to drive ICE vehicles for years to come and will not hesitate to fly to their favourite vacation destinations. The arrogance of the politicians and other dignitaries telling us that we must change our lifestyles when they have absolutely no intention of changing theirs is appalling.

These conferences are what saved your life from ozone layer depletion. Its easy to not care about science but its more likely that you are only alive because of it. This is how you're able to post something in the internet in the first place. Beyond that, your comment is pure garbage. You have no way of knowing how any of those people live. Thank you for these clear-cut insights into Climate Impact Research. The scientific facts are out there, crisp & clear: It's a question of survival for Earth inhabitants, BUT it's also sadly doubtful that 1% of the Comfortable will reduce their consumption 30-fold for the sake of the poorest 50% of Humans, let alone all the other lifeforms at stake ... that is: unless there's ZERO other chance to survive on Little Planet Earth.
@brianwheeldon4643
@brianwheeldon4643 2 жыл бұрын
Agree Jocelyne, The problem is there is close to zero chance of survival at the present rate of emissions. In that regard it looks like life in our civilisation will be really really struggling to survive much past 2070 or so in a recognisable way. But to survive in a reasonably recognisable way it requires hard mitigation from now, not 5 years hence or 10 or more. That's what Code Red for Humanity means. As Sir David King has emphasised- humanity has 3 to 4 years to put the means in place to mitigate hard. Global cooperation will be paramount. The 1percent, who knows to what draconian lengths they might go.

The wealthiest are not willing to change their course. Developed countries are contributing 79% of total carbon emissions in the world. Developing countries and many more poor countries are bearing the brunt of climate change disparity. The vested interests of corporations and effluent countries would not let the temperature to be under 1.5 degree.

Not enough people ever came with creative solutions. Scaring people leads nowhere. But I admit free choice and free markets could be not compatible with that creativity. The situation seems however bad enough to consider it. (It's even worse than that??) To give such examples which seem common sense but nobody mentions such ideas. Everybody must be able to get on the job rather comfortably by public transport. This would mean company busses coming to big parkings near stations; more trains and working with spread out working hours so the trains are all overloaded in the morning and evening. Or people could exchange comparable jobs so for both less transport is needed. Or all packages must be like cubes so they can be stored and transported more efficiently. Or all types of different plastics (pvc, pp, pe...) must be recognizable later by a automatic sorting system so recycling becomes easier.. On the other hand forcing people to become vegetarian or eat only local food goes too far, I think.

here is a question for any climate activist: are you willing to pay 10 percent more taxes from this day forward to reduce co2? and how much of the general population is willing to accept this? do the 20 wealthier countries have to pay double or triple to make up for all the poorer countries who can't afford a ten percent cut in their economy?
@brianwheeldon4643
@brianwheeldon4643 2 жыл бұрын
Yes George, Many serious studies have all been done, including by Piketty. It's the top 1 percent and the next 19 percent who have to pay the tax. The wealth in tax havens has to be confiscated 'nationalised planet wide equably. The top 1 percent must on average reduce their consumption at least 30 fold, perhaps 300 fold for the top 1 tenth of a percent. It's not difficult to identify where the problems lie in that regard. Go well

As long as people who pollute more, pay more. I'm sure that'd be fine for most people. Wealthier countries have emitted more CO2 per capita than poorer countries. Its what's fair. Plus, we have to understand what's important is reducing green house effect of the earth not just for others but for ourselves. If the ship in which your family lives is sinking, it makes more sense to protect the ship than to find who to blame.

yes, 100%. a respectable nation will certainly set up safeguards so people don’t loose essentials (e.g. housing, food, water, etc.). although much of the general population are very undereducated on this topic, and/or are extremely selfish due to varying reasons, but mostly due to capitalism and living in a developed nation, mostly to no fault of their own, with all due respect, it shouldn’t matter what the general population thinks. most people are accustomed to the high and rising (eh) quality of life, while not understanding the price that they pay (in emissions), majorly to the global south, which doesn’t receive the same quality of life standards, and is still heavily exploited to help developed nations feel successful. you say wealthier and poorer countries negatively, but what you mean is developed vs undeveloped. all these developed nations have already paid their emissions from developing, so yes, they should have to pay more while the undeveloped don’t. the developed also should have to provide means for greener, safer development.

Money is why this is so controversial, and also why people are refusing to change. This is obvious, but just mentioning that the richest 1% need to reduce their carbon impact by 30x, is hilarious. Do rich people really eat that much meat, use that much electricity, burn that much fuel, etc? First of all, humans have only increased CO2 by 0.01% of the total atmosphere. This constitutes a 50% increase in CO2, relative to itself, but is in fact only 1/25 of 1% of the air in total. It's literally a trivial amount. When CO2 absorbs heat, it becomes a high pressure gas, which causes it to rise. This naturally relieves energy, because of gravity. This process absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, similar to trees, or any thermal mass. Basically, it's such a complicated science, but way too much is being assumed by scientists, who are motivated by money, and are even deliberately presenting a particular conclusion that certainly is not the full picture. I'm not really worried about the CO2 levels. I'm more concerned with the debilitating pressure people will place on others, and how expensive and difficult it will be to survive in a world where the "environment is in such imminent peril". There's no doubt that the political implications will impact peoples lives far more than climate change has. It's only 1°C, it literally couldn't be any smaller, or the data would be inconclusive. I also think it's hilarious that nitrous oxide is considered a greenhouse gas, while oxides of nitrogen (NOx) are cooling the environment. Might as well say that air is a greenhouse gas. Spoiler alert: it is

How curious is no mention whatsoever of CCS technology - humanity's only chance at survival. The rest is "blah-blah" (Greta). Carbon budget? Get real. Look around!

Gee just another way to make people comply and they make money from it. What a scam. They should show the research they got their info from cause without showing it or providing links to it .....

Lifestyle change. Like flying all over the world to give presentations on pollution? Like cranking up coal and gas fired power plants to run KZfaq/Twitter/Instagram/Facebook server farms and charge electric cars? If these people were serious they would make the changes they are asking the rest of to make.

@@lukaswhy7387 That is definitely a possibility. Please explain? To me, it seems the elites are asking us to make changes they themselves are not willing to make. How does having a complex society change it? (I am not flaming/trolling. I am truly, genuinely interested in your point of view.)
