This is very helpful. In Jazz it’s key to know where the sentence (phrase starts and ends). This video is helpful in seeing where when how he is linking phrases.

One of the best instructional videos I have ever seen. Lot of material presented at a good clip. Excellent analysis. I spent an hour on this video and will need to watch it many more times to absorb it all. Thanks for the great lesson.

Methenys lines sound completely alien slowed down. Super impressive analysis. I wish I could wrap my head around advanced jazz harmony. I just be content being blown away. Nice job, makes me appreciate Pat even more.
@goodman112710 ай бұрын
Why alien? it’s normal outside playing
@ToddBrooks-gm6hy4 ай бұрын
Amanda, the "outside or advanced" notes don't matter, you don't need to know or even think about what they are or where they come from. The only thing that matters is the target note. In the case of the very first example the line starts on a D on the downbeat of the first beat then it moves to the target note C on the downbeat of beat 3 of the measure. You get to a target note chromatically, via diatonic or nondiatonic steps or by encircling it. The notes you use to get to a target don't matter, as long as you get to that good strong target (at a good time)! The best musicians in the world SIMPLIFY more than most everyone else would imagine.
@japanesemaplepruning4 ай бұрын
@@ToddBrooks-gm6hy I don’t think Pat Oversimplifies music by any means. I can guarantee he’s not just thinking about target notes. I don’t really think he believes in “effortless mastery “, He leaves music and the guitar are hard work. The reason why he can play whatever he wants it because he’s put in so many hours that he is incapable of producing notes without great rhythm feel dynamics and ideas.

I am always impressed with guitar players who can hear and play in this vein and you guys are young on top of it, I force-feed myself daily with everything and anything and I still feel I am not comprehending all of it.. I listen to Jazz and Pat a lot when not playing like on my walks. What advice can you give to the struggling musician who is trying to comprehend the art of Jazz guitar.. Man, I have been playing for a long long time.. Nice work man!

I love the SG sound for Pat style jazz tone... I got my Custom 61RI. SGs are criminally underrated in terms of clean sound. They have a very unique percussive nature. The notes really pop, and that light body is an absolute delight. The action and setup are fire 🔥 👌 No... They're not just for AC/DC...

One more observation of interest to me is Pats third finger lines up with his visable thumb above the neck quite often. I think he developed that to practice for extended periods of time early on to hold arm weight. Its a foreign position to my hand..
