I worked at a troubled youth facility. One of the therapist that worked with the youth, told me about people building bonds with objects, rather than humans. She said that it could be tied in with the person's youth. Neglected emotionally by the parent role in their lives, since the child couldn't build a bond with their parents, they would start building bonds with objects or animals. Like a beloved toy, or maybe a pet. They never learned how to build bonds with humans. Or taught emotional boundries. But this isn't always the case though, it could be linked to personally disorders. But in most cases, it's because of a neglected childhood.
