10 Reasons People are Still Moving to California.
*The California University system has 300,000 students, not just 300. I didn't catch that in the edit.
California gets a lot of attention and ridicule for being in bad shape. The thing is, are they really that bad? Sure they have a homeless problem, heavy taxes, the Cost of living is criminal, and hardly anyone can afford to buy a house.
But for some reason, California isn't losing population. People are still moving to the Golden State.
In this video, we will look at some of the reasons people are still moving to California. California is more than San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles.

The cultural whiplash I experienced coming from the Chicago burbs was an eye-opener! Example, maroon onesie gym outfits doing bad calisthenics to ‘Go chicken fat’. Canoga Park junior high?? Smart black shorts and white short-sleeved shirt getting some syncopated moves on with the Doors 1st album. yeah (sorry for all that typing Briggsy 🎄☃️)

bravobob1, you're an asshole!!!! Freeze to death Michigan, that's a bunch of bullshit. You may freeze to death on Mt. Everest, K-2, etc. But give me a break. I have Lymphopenia a lack of Lymphocytes. So who a person subject that could die in the "Cold and Flu Season"? People taking chemo for cancer, Prednisone for a autoimmune disease like MS, young babies, the elderly, and people like myself subject to infections. In weather down below zero I dress warm and I'm okay. Michigan is a wimpy winter state like most of country. You moved to California because you are a liberal leftist socialist that want to "feel home" with other people like you. Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort and other ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area is the ONLY reason for California to exist. You said you freeze to death in Michigan, you are nothing but a PUSSY!!! Briggs, why don't tell about the 19 FEET of SNOW in 7 DAYS that fell in Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort in December, 2018.

With #2, the diverse community, comes the fact that no one cares if you are from California or not. I've tried to move elsewhere and everyone's grandparents went to kindergarten together and no matter how many years I was there I was an outsider. In California, if you are here, you are here, and it isn't a big deal if you aren't from here. I wonder why that is.

Not just look at one single factor like sales tax or something.

I lived in Texas and Oregon before moving to California. After experiencing the place, it is difficult for me to move out of California. It is simply too beautiful. I explain that the crazy's are mostly the ones who move in from another state (like yours.) I tell them that people who have never had such freedom to express themselves as they have in California can have a hard time adjusting to it. Thirty-five years ago, before it was too expensive, we bought 6 acres in a little valley full of oak trees at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains and built our dream home in the middle of it. You can’t see another house from our place. At 3200 feet we get a couple of snows in the winter. It is a half hour commute to work. We have bears, bobcats, and even a rare mountain lion sighting. I can drive on a four wheel drive road to 8600 feet within 25 miles, and to below sea level in the desert of Coachella Valley in 60 miles. The highest point in Southern California, Mount San Gorgonio, at 11,502 feet, is 20 miles away. The beaches of Orange County are 60 minutes away, the Staples Center and the Disney Concert Hall in LA are 90 minutes away. Where else could we have all of this?

As someone who’s born and raised in Northern California (bay area) and been here for 40 years....we have been looking to move out of state. California definitely isn’t what it once was and it’s mostly due to politics and how terribly it’s been run. I think I’ve watched every available video across the platform about why people are leaving, where to go and so on...but just the other day started looking for reasons people move here or stay. There are not many videos at all, so I was happy to see this. I hope California someday gets better, but I don’t see it happening any time soon.

Agreed, Newsom is flying CA into the ground. COVID handling is fine I suppose (aside from French Laundry ...smh) though I still don't understand why we're not adopting contact tracing. That said, AB-5 and Prop 15? Cannot wait to vote that guy out in 22.

@Nun of the Above I won't bet against it either. Polls, while appearing sound and cogent have not been very accurate in recent years. Whether that's a symptom of "Trumpism" or simply a loss of touch, remains to be seen. For what it's worth, I'm not a Trump supporter but I'm not exactly in love with Biden either. I fall in the MATH category. As "liberal" as we are, we voted down Prop 15 and we voted down 21. What does that say? Ironically in the shadow of AB5 we voted for Prop 22 which (honestly was probably ad driven) went in favor Uber and Lyft and against the progressive agenda to tax them out of the state. The ballot measure votes show a lot of conservative lean. No doubt COVID has been the current benchmark on approval but as we get out from other this, other issues are going to start to re-appear. AB5 was a disaster that is going to punish only small businesses who don't have the hundreds of millions to legislate themselves out of. It was intended for Uber and Lyft, who just sponsored Prop 22 which makes them exempt. What's left are small businesses forced to offer healthcare to subcontractors who, in many cases don't want or need it, to say nothing of how that affects contractors who work across state lines. I live in a fairly liberal town with a progressive mayor that I have a regular dialog with. Even those FAR to the left of me, including the mayor, are up in arms about the latest lockdown policies. Yes we understand COVID is nothing to ignore but it's also destroying small / local businesses who have invested heavily in precautions. There are several VERY liberal states that pay high taxes that can justify those expenses in results. I don't think it's ideology as much as it is that California isn't doing such a good job. Chalk that up to size, population, geography, diversity, the fact that we're more of a nation than a state? I don't know but we need better. That comes down to leadership. For the taxes we pay we should have the best public education systems, we rank 37. We should have the best universal healthcare option, what option? We should have the best, most efficient water management system, we have no plan when the water dries up, our management is horrible and there's next to no investment in desal programs. We should have far better policies/programs to deal with the homeless crisis (which is due to our climate and homeless coming from other states), it's getting worse. We should have an amazing high speed rail network to allow those who want to work in high wage cities the option not to pay high wage rent/mortgages, in over a decade we've laid down a pitiful 100 miles of track with operations projected to start in (wishful thinking) 2022. In that same amount of time, China amassed 15,500 miles of high speed rail infrastructure and it's been in service for just as long. We should have policies to help small businesses and incentivize growth, instead we have propositions that demonize and tax small businesses out of existence every voting cycle.

@Nun of the Above Thanks for your responses. I do respect your points and do want to be optimistic. It's good to have a discussion such as this. I'm curious to your position on AB5. I know a lot of business owners who've been having a hard go, not made the least bit easier by AB5. I am included in this. Since AB5, I have conducted zero out of state business. All my out of state clients dried up and the reason was made absolutely clear, AB5. I've done everything I could possibly do to assure my out of state clients they're safe form California's legislation, spending many thousands of dollars in the process. From their position, there's too much uncertain risk, that makes me radioactive even if the quality of my work is superior to someone from a different state. So that's about 20 to 40K of business lost. A significant portion of my yearly income that I've had to work hard to recover in the middle of a pandemic. I was lucky but I've witnessed many careers ruined. We are not multi-millionaire tycoons. We're what's left of the middle class in this state, leading the charge in the gig-economy (as I've been doing since 2008). There are certain rules you play by in becoming an independent contractor. There are risks you take, expenses you incur and benefits as well. Those rules existed long before Uber and Lyft were multi-billion dollar corporations and with a cursory amount of education, a person can understand the benefits of it and not be a victim to it. Instead, California created legislation that was an appeasement to ignorance. Those who made the choice to be Uber/Lyft drivers but didn't understand what being independent contractors meant and thought they deserved the benefits of full-time employment. AB5 works great for that type of situation (I suppose) but not when you're a business that has multiple clients and you pay for your own healthcare willingly. So what happened? Prop 22 passed, making the Uber/Lyft issue moot and now the businesses that never wanted AB5 in the first place are paying the price. That above ALL other reasons is why I would choose to vote Newsom out of office because in spite of what the publications and statistics say, that is the reality I and many people I know are facing. I say all the above without malice, I just need to point out the divergence between quotable publications, statistics and what's actually happening on the ground. I'm very resilient, I've made it work. I'm generally very happy to live here. I didn't take the victim route, I'm doing fine. That said, I'd like our government to be of the people and not of whatever stats they think will make me feel better. If that makes sense. I work hard and pay a lot of taxes each year. I'm not looking for handouts, I just want to be able to sustain.
@wizardmix
@wizardmix 3 жыл бұрын
@Nun of the Above I can respect your position. I've always supported and voted for LBGTQ equality and I'm glad we as a nation (some faster than others) are getting over it. I promise you I will do my research but I really do need Newsom to answer for AB5. I am not a one-issue voter but I do feel like we can be doing better for ourselves in this state. Since you voted for proposition 22, that indicates that (whether you intended or not) you are not for AB5. I actually voted against 22 but not for the reasons most did. I voted against because I felt at that point, we shouldn't be giving the ride share corporations AB5 specifically targeted to enforce their golden parachute, but, thanks to the highest funding any ballot measure has received in California history, misleading language and a slew of misleading ads, we exempted the ride share industry with legislation they wrote for themselves, leaving all other independent contractors out in the cold. It was a real lose-lose because the ride share drivers lost out on what they were fighting for and independent contractors like me are stuck with a bill they never wanted. I am not against those less fortunate than I am. Like most people in my position, I didn't have a perfect life, not everything was handed to me but I'd be foolish if I said I didn't have some help/support along the way. All things in account, I do consider myself very lucky. That said, I simply don't understand why we cannot play by the same rules. AB5 is about healthcare, so why, as a state are we beating around the bush? We're for all intents and purposes better classified as a nation, why can't we construct a universal healthcare system? Instead of punishing businesses for the audacity of signing peoples' paychecks, why not create a public option for everyone? Then, as a small business, I could be more free to hire the contractors I want to hire without fear of being pinned for healthcare (which would immediately bankrupt me). As a small business, I wouldn't be radioactive to my out of state clients either. I suppose what I would say is this. Please do your research but since you are no longer working, consider repealing AB5 when it shows up on the ballot. I can tell you it's not doing anyone I know or work with any amount of good. Universal Healthcare is what we need not making it harder for independent contractors to get work because their clients don't want to be stuck with AB5. That's the reality. No one is actually providing the healthcare, they're just dodging contractors. The other argument is "Well that will incentivize more businesses to hire full time." I think the Pandemic should have proven by now that the gig economy is only accelerating. Those of us who work this way, do so by choice. I've been replaced by salaried employees because I refused to take the offer, that's fine. No one is getting hurt by me.

I am really glad to hear that since this state is way too crowded now! But seriously, I have lived in So. California all my life and cant imagine living anywhere else. Every state has it's problems, but it really depends on where you live, what kind of job you have, and what your needs are. I do not experience any of the downsides that are described about CA other than the high price of housing and the crowded freeways. I dont encounter alot of homeless people since I don't live in the city of Los Angeles, and I actually benefit financially from high home prices since I a mortgage loan officer.

@Nun of the Above These are the changes I saw in the last 50 years: California used to have the top schools (K-12), now they are near the bottom of the list. California used to have the best roads, but now the roads have turned to crap. California used to have reasonable taxes, now the taxes are WAY too high. California used to have a minor homeless problem, but now the homeless problem is growing out of control. In both LA and San Fransisco, the homeless pee and crap on the sidewalks and nothing is done about it. In LA the homeless camps are taking up the whole sidewalk, you have to walk in the street to get around them. Downtown traffic in LA was always bad, but in the outlying communities it want from very good to horrible. The traffic jam of LA has expanded into the outlying cities. The electrical grid in the 1970 could handle the load, BUT today they've failed to upgrade it and rolling blackouts are very common and it's only going to get worse in the future. LA just got a new DA who's NOT going to prosecute criminals for a number of crimes, that should help make the crime rate go way up in LA. California spent BILLIONS of dollars on a High Speed Rail system that would cost over $100 Billion+ to finish. The current construction is worthless because it's too costly to finish, but what the heck it was only taxpayer money that could have been used to fix our roads. No, California is NOT Better than ever, California is falling apart and the Bozos in Sacramento are dreaming of a Wealth Tax so they'll have more money to blow on pet projects. The wealthy will do what the wealthy did in France, they moved out to avoid the tax and the middle class will get stuck with the bill. California used to be a nice state, BUT the Democrats took majority control and it has been going downhill after that. The only reason the weather is nice is that the Democrats in power haven't figured out a way to screw that up.

I lived a year in Monterey when I was at DLU. As for “diversity”, I’m so sick of hearing about it that I want to throw up at the mere sound of the word.
@RobinP556
@RobinP556 3 жыл бұрын
@Nun of the Above The highest tax rate is currently 13.3%, that’s pretty damned high. Yes, that’s the highest tax bracket, but it shows that CA doesn’t really care about the people’s right to earn. And no one that’s ever ran a business in CA would deny that the regulations are insanely crazy. As for gun control, I’m talking about overly strict gun laws that do nothing but impose restrictions on law abiding citizens. In 2019 CA had more mass killings than any other state, though to be fair that’s not per capita, but overall and CA is the largest state in terms of population. Overall CA does have low gun violence per capita, but with the strictest gun laws in the country I’ll live somewhere else. That’s my choice. Some people want to surf for relaxation and others want to shoot. As for diversity, it’s almost always diversity in terms of appearance, seldom ideas. That’s why I’m sick of hearing the word.

Well you sound like a nice guy. What state do you live in?
@RobinP556
@RobinP556 2 жыл бұрын
@@ichirofakename Thanks, I’m in Tennessee currently. We have no income tax at all. We do have a high sales tax that varies some by county, there’s a base state rate and then counties add something to that, but it generally sits at about 9.5%. Prior to the school year starting up we have a no sales tax week on school related items, clothes, computers and whatnot. I believe that there’s an upper limit on at least some of that, an article of clothing above a certain price isn’t exempt from sales tax, that sort of thing. This year I bought a new desktop computer, and while the computer itself was tax exempt, the monitor wasn’t. That struck me as a bit odd, but at least I got the most expensive part tax free. Gun crime in Tennessee is pretty much like any other state, most of the state is low, but the big cities like Nashville and especially Memphis have far too much gun crime, and just violent crime in general. I could always blame it on Democrats, which is a fun way to trigger someone on Twitter, but to be honest it’s just a city thing. I’m mildly curious about why that is, but I’ve never really looked into it. Since I don’t personally care for cities, for the most part, I just stay out of them. As much as I’d love to blame high murder rates per capita on states with strict gun laws it would be disingenuous to do so. Alaska, Louisiana, and Alabama have the highest per capita gun death rate (2008-2017) while Hawaii, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are the lowest 3, California comes in at #42. But nonetheless I’ll stay in states that infringe the least on my right to own and use what I wish for my defense or just for the fun of shooting. Everyone has their own form of meditation, and mine takes place behind a gun.
