Hello Cecile! I fell in love with gouache due to its finish and flexibility. That said, the color shifting after drying is frustrating to deal with. More recently I have been mixing gouache with watercolors, with mostly good results.

I started painting in 2022 with acrylic. Didn't find it enjoyable. Never really liked the look of it, and really didn't like worrying about the disposal process. I just stopped painting. Then I tried watercolors which are lovely, but wanted the opacity of gouache (which is the only thing I liked about acrylics). So I switched and have been extremely happy with the change. My pick is Holbein's Primary Kit, which you show in this video. It's the second brand I tried and it's just a dream to use. So I agree with all of your points: gouache is the best-and good gouache should never be underrated. :)

I do book illustrations mostly black-&-white either with a dipping pen or an Indian ink brush. When I do add colour I've been using acrylic. Most of my pictures are very sketchy in style so they just need tiny dabs of colour. The difference is that with acrylics I do need dozens of tubes in different colours. Because acrylic dries so fast and cannot be reactivated with water you can waste a lot of paint if you mix your own. I would like to try gouache. I love the idea of just using blue, pink, yellow and white! PS one major difference with acrylic, you don't mix colours wet on the paper, you just wait 10 minutes and paint a thin layer of another colour over the top and you get your mix that way. So to get a very intense green for grass you can add streaks of yellow and turquoise and it makes your green really "pop"!✍️
@CecileYadro
@CecileYadro 5 ай бұрын
You can layer with gouache too, although it's a bit more tricky than with acrylic. Another good thing for you is that gouache is matte and easy to photography/scan without any glare on it.
@ZadenZane
@ZadenZane 5 ай бұрын
@@CecileYadro it's funny people talk about acrylic's quick drying time as some sort of disadvantage, presumably that's because they like to smear one wet colour into another or work in a wet-on-wet kind of style. That's all a mystery to me. In my limited adventures with paint I have never yet thought, "Oh I wish this paint wouldn't dry so fast. I wish it were still wet!" As I say, that's all a mystery to me but one day, when I feel more accomplished with acrylics, I intend to invest in the little box of professional grade gouache and solve that mystery. PS I did have a couple of pots of "acrylic gouache" from Liquitex. It's basically a very liquid acrylic that dries matt so it does look just like gouache!

Cecile, if you can help me with that!! Finally I varnished it with spray. But i have to admit I love the texture and vibrancy of gouache. Your enthusiasm is contagious, but I 'm worried about archival methods to preserve the paintings with gouache, because I think that they are very delicate. Thanks 😊, Silvia

I've always wanted to paint. I didn't like acrylic at all, always dried up paint to throw away. And I didn't know techniques like layering or blending. I'm not good at drawing, so that wasn't an option. I knew that I had to practice shadows and highlights and shapes somehow, so that after a lot of ugly attempts I might end up with something respectable. Also, I never knew what to paint. Some time ago a friend of my mother gave me a box with almost dried up paints. I had no idea what those colors were so I figured if it's not acrylic it must be oil. At some point I wanted to paint a picture for my grandparents on their wedding day. So I have these weird 12 colors called "Schminke". (In German this means "face paint"...) I was so frustrated. The colors looked different wet than dry. I had to dilute them with so much water my drawing paper ended up being just a muddy mess. After the first layer, I couldn't see my pencil drawing anymore. Then I googled what those stupid colors were that I had there... Now I have 120 tubes of Arteza gouache and watercolor paper. I still can't paint or draw, but the consistency is getting better and better. The stuff is a miracle medium. For me, gouache is a dream that I could never have imagined. Now I'm just struggling with self-doubt and inexperience. I need days for a simple picture because I'm trying to get the colors for highlight and shadow somehow. Since I haven't learned that at all yet, I just go back and forth with a different color in the hope that it will fit randomly.... The constand waiting until the layer is dry is an exercise in patience... Most of the time it ends up in the mud. I have really bad problems with the thicker consistency. Everything is fine up to "milky", but then I start blending everything and in the end I have a picture with a thick layer of grey-brown. As long as I don't know which color belongs in which position, I see black for my art career XD

You know what's a little unfortunate? I was introduced to gouache in primary school but was never taught the techniques. I think gouache was considered a "kid" medium since its easy to paint with, easy to rewet, easy to clean...etc... and kids just messed around with it. I drifted to watercolor later in life but came back to gouache recently and fell in love with it because it is watercolor but more! There is something quite therapeutic about painting with gouache that i gotta admit watercolor can be frustrating. I think it's the level of control I can exert on the paint. Watercolor can a bit chaotic if i am not in control.

Definitely Your enthusiasm is contagious, and I fell in love with gouache, too, but I can see immediately its severe limitations: (1) very small community, it is even smaller than oil pastels (2) cheap gouache is not expensive, but high quality guache is brutally expensive (3) the typical size of gouache paintings are small A5 or 20 x 20 cm. If I want to paint something A3, gouache is not the medium to go (4) When you add even a tiny bit more water than needed, gouache paint becomes imediatly a regular watercolor losing its opacity, opacity control requires a hell lot of practice (5) Some colors are opaque some colors are semi-opaque, even the opaque ones are not as opaque as oil or acrilic (6) When you want to apply classic layering painting process, the fact that the underlying gouache layer is resolved back is a pain. You cannot really fixate a base layer (7) If you prefer painting transparent style, watercolor is far more convenient and a lot cheaper with a huge community, workshops. (8) It has a dull matte finish, just like any watercolor, which is fine in sketchbooks; fortunately, it can be varnished to get a more appealing (semi-glossy) look. Still, with all these limitations, I love gouache, it is absolutely challenging, hell expensive, but it is fun even watching videos like Yours.

@rennley_
@rennley_ Жыл бұрын
M. Graham and daVinci are the two brands that i know of with the highest lightfastness for their pigments. in M. Graham’s case, they use the same pigments that are used in their watercolors, just less finely ground so they are more opaque. in the 70’s and 80’s gouache was used primarly in graphic design and illustration, and as the work was generally meant to be photographed and then disposed of, rather than hung in a gallery, there wasn’t much concern for lightfastness and archivability. these days, anything marketed as “designer’s gouache” contains more opacifiers, chalk, and whitening agents - they’re going for opacity and that unique matte finish. if you’re concerned about lightfastness, most manufacturers list their pigments and their archival ratings on their websites. i’m personally a big fan of M. Graham’s gouache. they are a bit more transparent than say, Winsor & Newton (or Holbein) but you can easily build on the opacity by layering them. (sorry to hear that you had to deal with an unkind comment!)

I have bought some vintage JM Paillard omnigouache tubes in an art store. Still, I don't understand if they are real gouache or tempera or opaque watercolor... What I don't like is that there is a big confusion about gouche. 🎨 I love watercolor but, you got a good point, the paper need to be thick and is not very cheap.

If it is acrylic paint it's written on it. So it's traditional gouache.

How about Turner Acrylic Gouache?! That does not change color value after drying, Its also more cheap than traditional gouache and it doesn't crackle on the paper when dry, its flexible yet still velvet like with no acrylic shine! It Has the matte and opaque benefits of traditional gouache, it might even show less brush stroke textures, becomes one with the paper since it can also be diluted with water, offers great lightfastness and another pro, is that it does not reactivate with water after drying preventing potential muddiness and so it allows layering very well.. That all being said I can only imagine that traditional Gouache is being outpaced in these regards or what am I missing here?.. Though if you like mixed media and adding color pencils onto your paint, maybe the FLASHE matte 'Vinyl' paints might work the best for that purpose and is even more cheap, but loses a bit of color range the Turner Acrylic Gouache can offer - both are premium products.. This took days of headache finding some common sense in all available art mediums, but these two cents could guide who is interested into some new unexplored directions, what do you think?!..
@CecileYadro

Well, I really don't like acrylic gouache because you can't rewet it! What is an advantage for you is not for me. I like to be able to blend after, to rewet and get new colors...
@SkywalkFPV
@SkywalkFPV 4 ай бұрын
@@CecileYadro I agree for everyone is there own style for sure.. And I do like watercolors where I see most use for (transparent) base layers, defining shapes, lights and shadow areas.. But to finish into details, mixed media offers allot where more layers are required.. So I do see value to stop the rewet at some point, to come in with more opaque colors, like acrylic gouache or vinyl could offer.. Also colored pencil and fine line inks are common used in mixed media hyper and semi realistic drawing/paintings ect.. I am just adding some food for thought that although traditional mediums are good and have some benefits, they also have downsides.. The pursuit of getting rid of those downsides is just common sense for who shows interested in all kind of mediums, to settle somewhere eventually.. Like I mentioned earlier there are also benefits in something like acrylic gouache or Vinyl.. Not only in compatibility with other mediums and or less crack and flexible outcomes, but also in workflow and less color change ect.. More mixing on the palette than on the paper to have better control, instead of being at the mercy of rewetting that makes painting a bit more unpredictable - some cannot afford to take such risks that could come at a cost.. Then Acrylic binders or Vinyl potentially increases work speed and accuracy, but of course also tailors to specific opaque art styles.. So I do still keep standing my ground, that not only the traditional Gouache is the 'best' medium for painting like this video suggests ('that is published to everyone, in this public space where opinions should be able to differentiate and provide informational value all together') Traditional Gouache is also more expensive and not really made to cover larger area`s ect.. So there are enough downsides, which are already solved with other mentioned mediums, while no medium all together I have found is just perfect.. Is the reason why I am looking into all mixed media capable products and workflows.. Anyway Just my two cents here, no thanks.. Cheers!

Gouache is great in many ways, but there is one thing that makes me paint with water-soluble oil paints. Well, the dark colours have no depth. I can deepen them by using varnish, but it causes the lights to darken considerably and this rules out the use of varnish.
@CecileYadro
@CecileYadro 10 ай бұрын
Yes, it's a downside of gouache. But I don't find that varnish is lightening the light colors?

Blending requires a thick paint, if you don't have enough paint on the paper you can't blend properly. Try with a thicker layer of paint and it should work!
