Yes, I agree. There is a difference between what you admire and what you want to make. I am on a journey right now because I accidentally discovered something I like making, so I am continuing to make it and I am also trying different mediums. I think you need to follow the joy. If you continue to feel intrigued and you want to keep going, even if it’s challenging, that is a good sign.

Finally someone saying what I’ve been saying! I always believed that you can’t “find your artstyle” because it’s already in you and it’s like a relationship between you and your art journey. “Finding your style” implies that it is something to find, as in relying in something that was already made rather than relying on yourself to make something. “Finding your style” is a glorified myth.

Style is the end result of a series of compromises between the artist and their vision, persistence, skill, the medium they create with, and their curiosity.

I'm in a number of art groups online, and I constantly see people asking, "How do I find my style?" Or, "I'm a very detailed painter, how do I learn to paint loosely?" So many people chasing after something because they think their innate style is not enough. Rather than just developing the style they naturally paint in, and becoming skilled in that, they fuss and fret that their work isn't as good as someone else's in another style.

for me its like, my inner art style isnt what i am wanting to do or go for, im more semi realistic with my art but i want to have extremely simplified works as i want to design characters simple to what you see in cartoons or in sanrio for example, so getting there is going to be really difficult lol XD

I am 4 months into my art journey ... 68, semi-retired from software development and I was teased about my "art" when young ... assumed that I was not creative. I have been a hobby photographer for years which I love and continue with, but recently decided I wanted to paint watercolor and then realized I needed to draw so... At the moment, I draw or paint whatever appeals. I am keeping an illustrated journal as well as sketch and paint "books". And I save photos that I think I would like to paint ... mine as well as others'. I'd like to go through things and apply tips 1-3 to start. I will say that I learn techniques painting or drawing subjects that might not be my favorite, but the techniques are helpful for what I *think* are my favorites. Thank you ... I will watch again!

This was extremely interesting. I was self taught and had developed my own style and it was more illustrative. People would request me to draw caricatures or something similar. I even won the opportunity to design and carry out a mural for a teacher’s classroom. I loved creating art and had a passion for becoming an illustrator. I wanted to learn more so in high school, I took two years of art classes and a semester in college. That time completely killed my style, my passion for art and creativity because the teachers I had, only cared about art being as realistic as possible and some of the pieces I was most proud were ruined or thrown away while in my teacher’s care. It’s been about 10 years since then, and I’m getting back into art and trying to reclaim my style but I still seem to have those teachers in my head telling me that illustration is not a true art form and that there’s no point in doing if it doesn’t look real.. and so instead of seeing blank pages or canvas as opportunity for creativity, I have a slight panic if I don’t have a specific idea in mind or if I don’t think I can make it look perfectly real. Do you have any suggestions for reclaiming your art style or passion for art after losing it for a time?
@CecileYadro
@CecileYadro 6 ай бұрын
That's difficult to say. If 10 years later you still think about what they said (and I had the same kind of teacher in art school too!), my best advice would be to change the medium. If you were using oil, then use gouache, or alcohol markers... something that will not remind you of your teachers.

@@CecileYadro Oh that makes sense. I recently started trying watercolor pencils because they are totally new to me. I have always been terrible with watercolor but I love the look of them. I just thought they weren’t as intimidating because it felt just like coloring… but making the connection, they don’t make me think about my teachers criticism at all.

Yep. You and I have the same views on photorealism. I remember when I was in art school (Arts High) backinnaday, and there was this artist from the Arts & Industrial Design school above us who would spend *months* etching with wire on a gesso board, depicting a single piece of fruit. It was absolutely beautiful... _as a photograph._ But as a piece of art? I didn't think so. But I was a kid, so I felt that there was something I was missing. Yet, decades later, my opinion on photorealism hasn't changed. It's wonderful to look at, but it seems much more ego-driven that driven by the desire to move the viewer.

I don't know if it's ego-driven but it's surely time consuming!

Everything is art. Photorealism is not my thing, but it's art. It depends on an artist and style. But most work require time and most artwork is pretentious. It's just what fine art is. It's about trying to be refined, exclusive, original. A photorealistic drawing can ce original too. Surely the artists must work through his own filter.

I don't understand why some artists worry about style. It's like they want to put some kind of identifier in their pencil marks or brushstrokes. Just draw and paint and, however it turns out, that's your style.

I did artwork since i was child, and i love seeing the work of the great artist of the past, and would like to paint like they have done too, but it can only be done that way if you put the time and effort in it, i feel myself that this come from within you, the love and compassion and telling a story with a blank sheet of paper or canvas, pencil or brush, what i myself got from my artwork back in the day, was the feeling of emotional journey through life, or a diary on canvas so to speak, i loved doing portraits work and landscapes, i missed my chance of going to the School of Art in Glasgow, but later i had a chance to show others on how they could paint and draw from all mediums, after many years away from the art, i missed that feeling of of the brush and pencil in my hand, i had lost my expressional passion in that field for a long time, but what i will say you can not lose it, for the moment the brush or pencil is placed in your hand, it all floods back and has never gone away, i would say this, if in life you feel lost in your journey in life, write, draw, paint, just turn that handle and open the door to what you can do and put a smile back where it belongs in your heart, never give up and never give in.

Arts schools can be useful, I'd warm anyone considering art school to really check out their perspective on art. Some schools are very rigid. When I was 13, I was at an art school and it wasn't very good. After a number of weeks they had us donour first painted still life. The teacher said "paint what you see", so I did and was told that was wrong. I used different colours because that's what I saw. I never went back. I've heard many similar stories or ones where the school is so set on their ideas of what art is anything outside that is discounted. Even heard yesterday about someones art school experience saying they didn't teach business for artists as they literally told the students it's pointless as you'll never sell your art. Wth? That's appalling.

Honestly, I don't really think you need to know how to draw--"draw"-because what is drawing? I have seen amazing line drawings, paintings without distinguishable forms. I would say don't let "drawing" hold you back. Because I think lot of people think if they can't copy something exactly or make it symmetrical, etc., they can't be an artist, they're no good But art is so much more than that. At any rate, I do agree that you should look at as much art as you can and see if you can identify the things you like about what attracts you to each piece. THERE is where I think you will find your own art, your style. But I wouldn't worry about being good at "drawing" so much. Art is subjective, meaning, we like what we like and we don't like what we don't like, so, yes, find what YOU like and go for it! ❤

Interesting question. I also think the style is in us. It's what we are drawn too. We can take inspiration and try to copy it or the style. It's great to be skilled like that. But the true style is how we need to hold the brush, what we tend to focus on, what colors are we drawn to, how much paint and contrast we want to use. What subject matter are we drawn to. So this is not about copying someone else. It's more about the inner need and what we find appealing.

Dear Cecil, thank you for this video. Your first point: find what you love… oh my… I love sooo much! Love urban sketching with ink and watercolor but digital gouache character design too. I‘m in love with digital watercolor children’s book illustrations and background paintings for game design. I‘m 47 and want to be a full time artist but struggle so much what to choose. All of this is a separate genre and sooo different and I think I haven’t enough life time to improve in each of this. I love all of this so much and for each one I can say why I love this… I wish it would work for me, but it overwhelming me🤪. I took so many classes and courses the last two years, I was on Domestika, Skillshare and 21Draw and to practice helps me a lot to improve, but no one really really deep because I try to lern all of this different skills. I’m not bad because I practice a lot, but nothing feels like my style. Hope you know what I mean 😅 The only thing I know is, I don’t want to paint realistic portraits but I love the cartoony style🙈😅😂 lovely greetings, Nelly❤🌺

I just have this problem, that I don’t know if anyone else has it (I’m sure there’s someone out there with the same problem as i haha) that is that different media, evokes different art styles for me. Just as an example, my favorite media is ink with a rottring pen (so same line thickness) and mixed media of watercolor, pastels and colored pencils. When I draw with ink I tend to go for more cartoony type of drawing, but when I use mixed media I tend to go for semi-realistic stylized art. I want to match my inking style with my mixed media style but I feel like the lack of depth I like with ink, I don’t really like with mixed media. I try to view ink as a simplified more stylized version of my mixed media style, but I still want them to be coherent, I still haven’t found the way to achieve that, precisely because I can’t pick a favorite between these two styles of mine, it’s a pain to deal with >

But one question, if you can answer it: What if you like many things(art) and to paint in two mediums--which are very different in style and approach (acrylic and watercolor). Can you develop a completely different style for each medium?

Even if you wanted to have the same style in different mediums, you'd have to adapt to each medium. Especially an opaque and a transparent one. The very nature of each will induce a different style due to the technique. And it's OK to have different styles!

What if you don’t like your style? I hate when people say they can tell it’s one of my drawings because they know my style. I would like to be able to draw in the style of others. To be honest I’m a bit bored by my art style and fed up of it looking the same or similar.

Even if you work in traditional art forms, AI can provide a shortcut to finding your style AI can blend any elements together into a cohesive whole So if you love elves, soviet propaganda posters and Caravaggio, but can't imagine how you could combine those elements, AI will do it for you You can then take the results as inspiration for where to go with that synthesis

I'm still in 7:54 I hope I get my answer, I paint floral, but if someone asks me what is your style, I can't tell them. My painting it's not abstract, impression Expressionism, or realistic, that's my problem how to call my painting style.

Hey I am a self taught artist, I didn’t practiced much but I can draw landscapes just by nature… can you review my art? Where to send it?? Also I am very drawn in to religious paintings, I like to paint story telling pieces( mostly from religious books and surrealistic one’s ), which got darkness in colors. I also got many paintings in my imagination and I want to brought them to the canvas, I can paint the landscapes in my mind but I must learn figure drawing because that’s also the thing in my imagination.

When I was young I was taught the word admire was reserved for God, so it sours me when it is used for a technique. I would have responded better to using the word appreciate.
