Drunk sloppy musicians that can't play are a mockery of music, they're not "real rock & rollers," they're just being losers and it's sad and it sucks for the audience.

The whole wasted-on-stage thing is, at best, a phase that some young musicians go through and when they grow out of it they start performing better. Some people think it's "cool" and it's "authentic" when certain kinds of artists perform wasted, but it's bullshit.

When I say "wasted music", one example can be "cocaine cowboys", a huge disco scene for coke-heads who weren't into psychedelic music or r'n'b. If you're into jazz and classical you're playing California soft-rock as a gig, and if you're like me, filling in for guitarists, working through agents and managers, you get to see it all. If I wasn't living a healthy lifestyle back then I wouldn't be riding around the peninsula on my bicycle at the age of seventy-three. I hope you're living your life so you can enjoy your old age. My guess is that going on stage high/drunk and fucking the show up has been so common over the decades that a lot of musicians just think it's par for the course--almost as if it's something they're *supposed* to do in order to be a "real" rock musician. The better ones know when enough is enough and to start playing sober to be their best. It doesn't matter if they're already rich and famous, either.
