Bipolar disorder, also called ‘manic depression’, is a mood disorder defined by periods of intense, heightened emotion called mood episodes.
The three types of mood episodes are manic, hypomanic (less severe manic episodes), and depressive. With that said, here are 10 signs of bipolar disorder. Also, this video is meant to raise awareness on the topic of bipolar disorder. Do not self diagnose using this video.
If you or someone you know is dealing with bipolar disorder or they’re showing symptoms, please seek professional help by calling 1-800-273-TALK (8255) if you’re in the US. Or visit this website: www.suicide.org/international-...
It’s never too late to seek help.

My wife was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, medication did not help. She threw away her entire career by impulsively doing something illegal and was arrested. It was typical of her impulsive behavior that grew worse, much worse as she grew older. She died at 40 years old because of her inability to make rational decisions about her health. Her uncle and cousin were schizophrenic. Her mother was agoraphobic. My wife's siblings had undiagnosed mental disorders to say the least. Mental illness most definitely runs in families.

I recently got diagnosed with bipolar disorder after suspecting it for about a year and a half. I kept thinking that my brain was just trying to fool me, but I can't argue with a diagnosis. I came and watched this video again because why not. My mood episodes are environmentally triggered most of the time. Sometimes it just happens for no reason and I end up being completely unapproachable or the most talkative person. I'm both freaked out and relieved that I know I have bipolar disorder. On one hand, society probably sees me as crazy for it, but at the same time, I'm glad I finally have an answer for those many times I've been depressed without reason. I take mood stableizers now, which also helps with my ptsd. If you ever have moments where you feel awful for no reason, then look into it, I couldn't figure it out for many years and it was eating me alive Edit: The diagnosis was VERY wrong. I got re-evaluated, I have autism

Dude i'll reassure you... bipolar is one of the least "crazy" disorders, people with it tend to have high IQs. It's not a cliche comment i'm just making to flatter you, there is overwhelming evidence for this. Something also good about BD people is, they have an affinity for compassion and empathy! This is far from something that should freak you out. And i relate with you on how your brain sometimes confuses itself, it could be a mixed episode, you start reconsidering your whole life's purpose to the extent of hurting yourself. You're not alone!

i am 60 + & been dealing with this since adolescence so want to point something out, something u can do for yourselves, notice & pay attention to sleep & lack of sleep patterns. if i didn't get sleep , would just push on, had been pushing for years, well, 10 + years ago had psychotic break, only found out after 10 days of being hospitalized & given Seroquel, i was having wall to wall hallucinations, visual (talking to people who were not there) auditory (could not tell if a radio was on or if it was me) i wasn't a hazard to anyone but who knows, i could've walked out in traffic or off a ledge, i would not have known, all becuz i ignored sleep, just push on was my motto. so, as soon as i got enough sleep to stop the hallucinations, i got off the seroquel, (if it works for u, then by all means, do what u have to) & had to quit drinking, & now i pay attention & make sure to get sleep, i use a meditation technique to relax into sleep, u can look it up, it's one part, the first part of Vipassana called Anapana, it's not a breathing exercise, it's an exercise in awareness, you just feel ur breath entering thru you nostrils as u inhale, then feel ur breath as it goes out thru ur nostrils as u exhale. sounds easy, & it is, except the mind will try to go any & everywhere except ur breathing, but that's the practice, not to strain or try to force ur attention, just gently feeling ur breath, inhaling & exhaling, thru ur nostrils, after practicing this becomes enjoyable & will allow the mind & nerves to settle, & if u are in need of sleep, this will help you to let go of whatever concerns & if u want to, to fall asleep.

Mushrooms are very medicinal. This is why anybody familiar with psilocybin and any other kind of fungi will tell you, "They are alive." They have a very ancient wisdom. To my experience, all mushrooms have always said, "Pay attention to your life. How you think, how you feel, and what will you do with the information that you always knew, but now are seeing in this point of view." This is why mushrooms are so respected in tribal cultures. This mental health treatment works for me too. Half micro doses do the trick for me. At least a few days at a time with lengthy time in between. Thank you for sharing this point!

A minor note here: mood swings are also seen in people with ADHD, and the symptoms can sometimes be mistaken for Bipolar. This is why it's extremely important to have a mental health professional diagnose you.

I’m professionally diagnosed with bipolar disorder and I’ve found that theres quite a lot of mental health professionals today who’ve stopped using the terms bipolar I & II. My first psychiatrist said research has shown that it’s more of a spectrum and putting people into two boxes just doesn’t work anymore. This isn’t to say people with the differences of I & II don’t exist but there are definitely people who exist in between both sides. It’s interesting

I can relate to a lot. I was diagnosed in 1999 with bipolar 1; with rapid cycling and mixed episodes (which is a combination of symptoms of both depression and mania; which is no fun at all). So far my symptoms have been manageable, but I've had to do many med changes along the road. I was diagnosed in a psych ward and it was also mentioned to me that there are NO two cases alike (so I wouldn't compare myself to others). That's it in a nutshell 🙃

I was diagnosed just a few years ago and I'm in my mid-30's, so much of my hard life up to this point makes so much more sense now that I know why I acted the way I did. When at the time I just didn't understand why I was how I was. Every one of these is bang on, and I hate being this way. I'm managed with doctors, meds, and therapy but I wish I didn't need any of that and could just not be like this. I hate it so much, I'm such a burden most of the time and my family and friends don't deserve the complications I cause them, especially since I never meant to cause anyone trouble. I never asked for this, who honestly would?!

I got diagnosed with bipolar 2 a few months ago. I’ve never had a full on manic episode but have experienced many episodes of hypomania. Just as you stated in the video, I didn’t correlate my sudden productivity and lack of sleep as hypomania. I thought I was just suddenly “getting better”, so I went to the doctor believing I was just a depressed and left with a bipolar diagnosis. Having the diagnosis has really helped me recognize hypomania and keep track of my mood swings while I work with my doctor to find a medication I can afford that’ll work.

I was dating a bipolar guy. I tried to support him on depression, I tried to support him on mania. But the truth is that on his mania crisis, he was extremely mean to me. He was nice and tried to conquer people he didn’t know. It seems he was in love with every single unknown people around him. But for me, harshness. Turn out that while he was on a maniac event, I was getting depressed. He: euphoric to people in general, and aggressive to his family and me. And I was full time crying seeing my self-esteem turning into ashes while he didn’t care because of the crisis. Now we broke up and sometimes he says he can’t forget himself for being so mean, and sometimes he says I should consider he was on mania crisis. I personally consider my well-being.

The fact that this is basically on the nose makes me confident in the diagnosis I got years ago. It’s been my normal for like ever that I don’t know whether something is “normal” or not. So I got curious to check again. For almost all my life I thought I was just depressed but didn’t understand how I could move back and forth between being really depressed to excited for no reason and somewhat neutral. I was medicated only for depression and it never really helped. I stayed in depression most of the time I think. In 2016 I went to a psychiatrist to be diagnosed with PTSD, which was caused by a trauma that occurred, but in the process figured out that I was Bipolar II. Now I’ve been properly medicated and feel neutral more than depressed and have better control on my symptoms. I’m more calm and rational about stuff too. Total game changer! But always keep in mind that meds don’t cure you they help you manage. My hypomania is wonderful and awful at the same time. I use it to my advantage and love the amount of energy and productivity I get. But my biggest insecurity is I can’t shut tf up. I get too giddy and talk really fast. I trip on words enough already and struggle communicating because my mind goes too fast or just doesn’t process and form the information into proper sentences that make sense. I lack confidence in speaking, but still talk quite a bit. When I can tell I’m having an episode I apologize to my coworkers ahead of time and tell them what’s happening. Just so they know I can’t totally help it. It’s awful trying to fight the chatty urge and they seem to tolerate me well when I do. Lol

I feel the same way. I was diagnosed with depression all throughout my teen years because my doctor at the time was convinced that if I showed no signs of aggression or extreme anger, I couldn’t possibly be bipolar. I’m really glad I switched. The new doc actually listened to what I had to say and said I was a clear candidate for BD and took me off anti-depressants and put me on mood stabilizers. It’s honestly changed my life. Not just getting the help and medication I need, but the facts helped too. Just being aware of what the problem was has made all the difference. I completely understand what you mean about having bittersweet feelings about hypomanic episodes. While it can feel really great to get so many things done; finish that art project from last month, clean the house, go shopping, write a story, etc. It definitely has its drawbacks. I too get overly chatty, REALLY loud, and what I like to call ‘slaphappy’. Everything is funny. Everything. Even if someone tells me that someone died. I swear it’s like being on drugs or something. I suddenly get very social and make plans that when two weeks from now, I’m going to hate going to because I’ll be in a depressive stage again. I’m grateful to my new doctor for helping me find the truth and I highly recommend getting second opinions to anyone whose doc may not be listening to everything you’re saying.

I watched this video when it came out 2 years ago. I was suspecting I had MDD at the time and didn't bother analysing whether I could relate to this. Now that I've done more research and experienced new symptoms, I realised my depressive episodes cycle way too frequently for an MDD patient (I had more than 5 in the last 3 years, lasting for only a few weeks, while most MDD patients have them for months and then stay symptom-free for years). I also had a period of unusual confidence, I looked like a talkative, energetic extrovert to others, while being a quiet and shy introvert my whole life. After 2 years this video opened a new perspective on my issues, so I'll definitely bring BD into the discussion in my future visits to the doctor! Thank you :)

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder a few years back, I decided for me personally, instead of using medication to mask the symptoms and turn me into someone I’m not which would be dishonesty, I decided I would make the symptoms work for me, I’ve always been naturally artistically inclined, so when I realize I’m manic or depressed I use the thoughts and feelings and energy or lack there of to write/produce music, draw/paint, and engage in abstract thinking, also having a friend or two who are available for me to talk to, these things have proven more effective in managing my symptoms more than therapy ever has.

I was diagnosed with clinical depression when I was hospitalised at 14, they put me on antidepressants which didn’t do shit and sometimes made me feel worse. Until I was 17 I’d go through periods of just being full of energy, talkative, heightened sex drive, impulse and overall in a good mood. I’d then go dangerously depressed and suicidal. I think I’ve had a manic episode a few times. One time when I was 15 I snuck out the house at 1 in the morning (this was an impulsive decision not planned) and went to meet my ex boyfriend who was camping with some friends. My mood was just really weird as if I was drunk, I was just laughing, talking loads, sitting on my ex’s lap and kissing him (even though I wasn’t interested in him). My behaviour that night was just weird and not like me. I remember waking up in the morning feeling so embarrassed and confused. Anyway, when I was 17 the doctors came up with one last solution as an alternative to putting me back in hospital , they gave me mood stabilises/anti psychotics which are known to treat bipolar. They worked wonders. I still struggle and show clear symptoms of both depression and bipolar and when I don’t take my mood stabilises for a few days (like when I run out) I go back to exactly where I started as if no improvement was made. Today I’m still diagnosed with clinical depression but I believe I’ve been misdiagnosed and I’m unsure what to do about it. I’ve never told the doctors about that time when I was 15 or any other similar experiences and behaviours because I feel ashamed. Not only that but I’m scared they won’t believe me and take me seriously.

I've had Bipolar 1 since I was diagnosed at age 7, here I am 20 years old and still dealing with it. I've been on so many medications for this. The mania is the worst of it. When my body's tired my mind races to stay awake. I'll lay there without sleep for almost the whole night. I'm on really good meds now. I also am level 2 on the autism spectrum, so not only is having bipolar hard, so are social events and having my routine change constantly.

That's great that you have really good meds. I'm a bit bipolar though 5 6 and 7 aren't any on my list/condition. I have mood swing, with some disorder and suffer from depression that often recur through out my days. I stopped my meds for a year now and my moods get worse and I tend to isolate myself, either not sleep or have 13 hour straight sleep. I'm a bit autistic but I guess high-functioning but my main issue is my moods, getting too perked up then getting totally depressive.

One other annoying symptom is undoing things & making a mess that I'm too tired or overwhelmed to clean.. For example I re-organize my furniture once every couple of week's, then regret it & move it back. I move things into piles that need to be sorted through & then I feel so tired & overwhelmed & that triggers my depression.

Anyone else see things in the corner of their eyes? I’m not talking about a once a month “oh I saw something in the corner of my eye last night haha” I’m talking about on a daily basis. And you never really feel safe? Even if you’re in an empty room with the person you trust the most with a door and a million windows to escape from if anything did happen? Or you always feel like something is watching you even if you’re the only one in the room and you know it? Because I do. Especially feeling someone/something watching me. It’s getting so bad that I’ll have anxiety attacks from it, and I’ll just walk around the house feeling unsafe no matter where I go. And I used to loveeee having the lights off while sleeping, or doing things alone. But now I’m just terrified of it. And I sound like a child but yes I am afraid of the dark because of this. And it’s also caused me to not be able to sleep sometimes. Edit: also, I have constant mood swings. I could be happy one moment then angry the next, or angry the first moment and then I cry so hard I can barely breathe and my stomach starts hurting. I get angry easily, annoyed easily, I do a lot of things wrong or I make a lot of accidents that can really affect my mental health. I sometimes feel suicidal but not to the point where I actually try to end my life, even though I really want to sometimes. I don’t get a lot of sleep, I now take this melatonin medicine stuff but before that it would take me like 3 and a half hours to fall asleep and I’d wake up super early, this also doesn’t matter but the only Dreams I ever get are nightmares or frightening/overwhelming (if that’s the word) Dreams. The last Dream I had that I can remember was a few days ago and someone was trying to break into my house. And I’ll also sometimes have random bursts of energy or very quick loss of energy and hope. lol do what you want with this info I’m gonna go cry and eat cereal GOODBYE HAVE A GOOD DAY 💃

Your video was helpful and most of the ten signs of bipolar have touched my life from 4 yrs old experiencing grandocity looking back but not diagnosed until age 31. Misdiagnosed as scisofrenia(sp) at 29 yrs with wrong medications. Off of medication looking back in time in my life I remember these symptoms because of cycling every 2 yrs then slowly down to every one year. At 45 yrs I was tired of repeating counseling conversations.also having too many support systems that I decided weren’t healing me. No offense to treatments. A large family with support from them became too involved in my issues. I I had my last decompensating at 45 yrs . I caught myself without aid from my supports in an episode. I drove myself on my bike to the hospital. Told them in the emergency room that I had decompensated and needed medication. Tho I had been told that this never happens I got the help there and went to my psychiatrist for treatment and an update on my medications. I was 45 yrs then. For 18 yrs I saw on a psychiatrist every 3 months for Med checks. During this time I only worked part time. At 63 yrs old my appendix Burtsti had a mass in my colon, there were two tumors on my left and one tumor on my right kidney. I had two surgeries right away and two more in three months and one more surgery in two months. Coming out of the first two surgery I immediately got a psychologist recognizing that I couldn’t handle bipolar disorder and the surgeries mysellf. I saw her for 5 months until I moved away to be with family. I saw a psychiatrist for a year because my insurance wouldn’t pay for both that doctor and a therapist. One night a the hospital after 4 and 5 th surgeries the hospital took my medications away cold turkey. I cried all night and my body shook. The next morning my doctor came in and ask what was wrong? I told him. He went to the computer and ordered everything and made the nurses run and get it all to be given right away. I lost my confidence. My sister and Neice had to schedules my flights and hotel back to the city I had moved from for the last surgery. I’m 65 and my MD prescribes my medicine and yesterday I got a psychologist again after only seeing an aged psychiatrist. All your 10 symptoms have been known to me and I’ve experienced from age 29 to 45 having had 14 times cycled into complete episodes. I ha 18 good years with a psychiatrist. Environmentally when the hospital took my meds I had to physically recover from lost confidence and knew I had to be with family. But all the years on medication these symptoms have been treated with medication and changes when I told the doctor change was needed. Tho I know depression is in there big time these 10 symptoms were not evident as long as I stayed on my medications. Eating right. Having insomnia taking the prescribed medication every night. And if sleep was missed or short I took doctor prescribed medication the next night so there was never more than one night without sleep.

Glad to hear they're looking at it again. I personally think it's a spectrum. If you're diagnosed with full mania, ever, it becomes BD type 1; if you've ever been delusional in your illness, it becomes "with psychotic features." My cycle usually resembles type 2 and I'm usually not grandiose, but because I have been that extremely ill once or twice, I'm "1 with psychotic" for life. -_-

Definitely more of a spectrum my mom is type 1 and significantly more severe then what type one would imply. (Albeit from what I’ve researched it’s about the worst case scenarios there is for bpd) like she’s just chronically ill and has been in a couple month long state of mania with psychosis. And I think that’s like a bit different then 7 days. (Not trying time compare peoples struggles to invalidate or anything I just think examples of worst case vs best case scenarios really emphasize a spectrum)

I'm terrified. I have expressed all of these symptoms at some time in my life, most of them on a weekly or monthly basis. Friends and family have hinted (and joked) that I might be bipolar but no one, including myself, took those claims seriously. And, coming from an absuive/toxic home and family I know that if I did get diagnosed with bipolar disorder it would fuel their accusations of me "being crazy" and find a way to lock me up in a pysch ward. All I've ever wanted is to be normal. I feel there is something more to my suffering in the past and in the present day, but I think I would fall apart if it were all confirmed. Both of my older siblings have severe ADHD, all my siblings and me have been tested for autism as well. Although I am not autistic or ADHD, psychiatrists have noted that I display similar symptoms/habits but no official diagnosis was made. However, I do have anxiety, depression, and C-/PTSD (diagnosed). I guess I'm just venting here. Thank you for reading this far.

Sounds like you tried to diagnose what's going on and try to look at your environment. Could be some kind of condition but conditions like adhd and anxiety/depression or maybe even OCD could all be conditions from your environment growing up and its how your body and mind responded. Therapy helped me the most but I know I need more. If in person therapy Is too much, try better help or something online as they let you have text or call sessions. They make you fill. A questionnaire and then match you with a specialist and you can swap them out if you don't like them
