Every singer wants to improve his or her voice.
Besides the quality of work ethic and a ton of other factors, there's a really small difference between the most amateur and professional singers.
Usually, the biggest difference between people that are just starting out and people that have been singing for a while are the singing techniques that they use.
Many professional singers have had the benefit of years of voice lessons to undo any bad habits they might have developed over their career.
So in today's video I wanted to show you 10 different singing techniques that the professionals use to improve their singing voice.
#1 The first technique you can use to improve your voice is having a tall posture. In this technique, you'll stand with your feet at hip width apart. Your shoulders should also be even above your hips so that when you look at yourself in the mirror, everything is in a straight line.
It's also important that you keep your chest comfortably lifted and your navel tucked in.
With the tall posture in place, you're ready for the second technique.
#2 The second singing technique I'd like to discuss is the diaphragmatic breath. Lots of teachers spend tons of time instructing breath control and breathing techniques with their singers. I'm not one of them.
However, I can tell you that fixing a singer's breathing technique can definitely make a huge difference to their singing.
The proper breath for singing is called the diaphragmatic breath. In this technique, you have to inhale in a way that your stomach expands when breathing in and contracts when breathing out.
You'd be surprised how many people tuck their stomach in when they inhale, rather than allow the breath to expand their ribs.
#3 The third singing technique involves relaxation. While relaxing may sound like a general singing technique, learning to relax some of the extrinsic muscles in your voice can really help your sound.
In the video, I demonstrate two ways to check for tension, both in the tongue and in your throat.
#4 Warm Up. Warming up is crucial to performing well. A good warm up will clear the vocal folds of any mucus and supply more blood flow to the area.
Warming up correctly is incredibly important if you're learning to sing with a mix of your chest and head voice registers.
Singing Techniques #5-10 are all singing exercises designed to help you sing with a mix.
Singing with a mix means that you're singing between your different vocal registers without breaking or straining.
This can be difficult for people that are just starting out but is incredibly important.
The exercises that I cover in the video, the 5-Tone count, the lip trill, the octave and a half Gee, bratty Nay, No and Mum are all incredibly helpful for finding your "mixed" voice.
While it may not happen immediately, learning to singing with a mix is one of the best things you can do for yourself as a singer.

Last week I was singing. I heard knocking on my door. I thought it was a music manager asking me to sing a record deal. It turned out to be the downstairs neighbor asking me to stop speaking and shouting so loud. I concluded that I don't have a singing voice yet. It's bad when people wonder if you're singing or speaking.

Don't pay attention to the nasty comments, there's a lot of jealous people out there who only feel better when they are putting someone else down. I can tell you really love what you are doing. I am almost 60 years old and feel like its a little late to get started. I always enjoyed singing (but was self consious of my singing ability and probably for good reason) but mainly it was to accompany my guitar and song writing but to be honest, I haven't done much of either in years. I'm thinking about finding a voice teacher now and getting back into it but this is a great start. I'd love to get into some Country Gospel singing and like the old standards and classic country too. Thanks for the video ...

You just.... BLEW MY FREAKING WORLD UP!!! I tried the breathing technique, at first I thought you were crazy lol because I always breathed in chest deep raising my shoulders, but I have no control of my notes, I always have that push and drop sound as I'm sure you know what I'm talking about lol... But the very very very first time I breathed in with my stomach/diaphragm... not only did it feel very weird but my breath control and note control was PERFECT (close as can be)... AND THAT'S MY BIGGEST ISSUE! I've been singing for 2 years and I didn't know this! KZfaq self-taught

There's even more potential support than what he says. Sit down on the front edge of a chair, put your hands around your waist above the beltline (thumbs in front, fingers in back), bend over so your head touches your knees, inhale and feel the expansion in your lower back. Now stand up and try to duplicate that expansion (it will not be as obvious and you really need to concentrate on it). Now sing SUPPORTING FROM THE LOWER BACK. Your front will automatically become engaged. There is SO much more breath support possible by expanding and supporting from the lower back than just the front.

@missycoyle5706
@missycoyle5706 4 жыл бұрын
Okay, you guys were wondering how I typed my comment. I have a thing on my phone called voice-over. In fact, everyone has it if you have an IPhone. I’ve been typing since I was eight, so I connect a blue-tooth keyboard to my phone so I can type a hundred words a minute without messing it up. Usually, I’m ending up writing letters I don’t actually write if I use the phone. I went to public school, so learning how to type was my only option. That an Braille, of course. About the five tone scale, also, I like to do it in a minor key, depending on my mood. I’m also a song writer. I know I need to get my music up here. That’s been a bit of a problem. Still trying to find someone to film me singing, who isn’t my child. Lol! Anyway, the warmup routine I used to do was an hour and a half, then the rest of the time was the different styles I love to do. For soul, I’d do a gospel song, for opera, something with a lot of higher notes. I love the whistle video you did, also. Good stuff.

Yowza! What a great lesson -- I really like the simple "chord scale" up the octave repeated four times, then down. In one practice session -- 5 minutes at most -- I have felt a real difference at the top of my (very limited) range. Thank you, so much!

That's great to hear Dan! Yes, the octave repeat scale is a powerful pattern. The 1.5 octave is probably even better for expanding your range. Here are a few more exercises to try: ramseyvoice.com/expand-vocal-range/

Completely stoked by your no-frills and hands-down approach: "Forget all the nonsense. Let's fix this real quick." Feels so encouraging, like: "After all, this might be less complicated than I thought". Even when there is more advanced stuff waiting along the road this is a great way to help overcome inner hurdles in the beginning and resistance to learning. Will see how I can incorporated some of that into my own teaching. Thanks so much for both: content and style of didactics... 🙏

it's a good thing we have a god to help us figure things out because If not we would be having a harsh pain in throat after 2 months of singing every day for 5 hours and still not knowing why it hurts. hmmm I wonder what it is maybe it's the weight of the words that I am saying while singing? OHMIGASH maybe after 8 hours of singing every day it hurts because the songs lyrics are sad or some shit and hurts my soul, which no one knows where the soul is , but I know where it is and still I can't figure out why throat is throbbing in pain after singing? it's a good thing we have doctors and shit like this because if not then we would not have doctors and life expectancy would be a lot lower, people would die of causes at the time which seem normal, but could be fixed by doctors who know weeeeehehehehehehehe

Love you. Straight up love you. I've been singing since I was a kid as I have a really good ear for keeping things in tune (I've been told this by others because I play instruments and help other people find which chords are correct for their voice etc. I'm not trying to pat myself on the back because I don't think I have "perfect pitch") which is, in the way, the worst, because I KNOW my voice is out of tune and I KNOW what chords I need to be hitting but my voice is simply just not made for singing. I've avoided getting a vocal coach for years as I'm extremely anxious and embarrassed of my voice but I finally said screw it and I'm starting out with these videos. I hadn't found anyone I genuinely liked until I found you. You have such a sweet and accepting presence and, though you have an EXCEPTIONAL voice, I don't feel intimated (well I feel intimidated by everyone as I'm a short small and anxious person but that's besides the point hahaha) and I feel encouraged to actually keep on learning. I know you saying "good job" etc. is just through the screen to thousands of people but it feels so genuine to me, which sounds super stupid I know, but it's just so encouraging. Thank you so much :)

Really good explanation video. I've been singing since I was 9. I am 34 now. All this I've learned by myself. I had no one who could've teached me. I spent many hours and many days in front of the mirror. I've learned so many things including subharmonics and overtones. I am a classical and metal singer with a vocal range of F#1 - E6 with no falsetto or vocal fry and I got a very strong voice and I am proud of it. Many people should learn from this video. Very well done 👌
