10 Southern Rock Albums A Newbie Needs To Own! (From SOT)

I just saw a great video on Sea Of Tranquility in which Pete Pardo chooses 10 Southern Rock Albums A Newbie Needs To Own. I grew up on Long Island, which was a hotbed for southern rock from the mid '70's through early 80's. So I immediately felt compelled to give my choices and how they compared to Petes.

Martin Popoff ruined SOT….I like Pete of course but his show really lost direction with the Hollywood Squares-style “guest hosts” format, but that’s just one persons opinion…

Hi Alan I managed to purchase The best of the Outlaws and Grey Ghost on your recommendation. First time I've heard of those bands. I cannot believe that those cd's we're actually available here in South Africa! Picking them up tomorrow so I'm excited. Marshall Tucker Band is my favourite Southern Rock outfit. Waiting for your next video.

That was too cool for school. I consider Wet Willie to be on the list of most under appreciated bands. Trudy is one of the best southern rock songs ever made on a great, great album. Trudy has been one of the most played songs in my head. That would be a good list....top 10 most played songs in our head. 🤣 ZZ is a Texas Boogie band. They are their own genre. Went to see Marshall Tucker at the Dallas Convention Center back in the good old days and we got there very early (can't remember why). The doors were open so we walked in and were told something happened with the tickets and it was general admission. We were told to go in and pick out our seats. We went down and sat front row center, decided we didn't want to be looking up the entire time and moved back to 7th row center. Great show. 😂Seriously great live band. Killer vocals.

Hope you're enjoying them. Fire On The Mountain I think is their best studio album. After that Saddle Tramp. Then can go deeper. If you don't like those albums, I don't think you'll like them. I also really like High Lonesome and Nightrider (but they're not as good as Fire and Saddle Tramp). But there's a lot of Charlie Daniels albums -

I'm sure that Pete at SOT will love you doing this and a good job you've done too. I don't have a big southern rock collection but the live albums by The Allman Brothers, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Little Feat are among my most prized records.

@@derhandtrommler I'm by no means in a position to give Little Feat a genre but they are variously labelled country rock, southern rock, bayou funk, louisiana blues and blues rock which is quite confusing for a non American.

@@markspooner1224 I've never seen Little Feat considered a "southern rock" band. I don't think of them like that. To me they're their own genre - but I also don't think of ZZ Top as a southern rock band (although they're from Texas). Southern rock to me, and to most, is based more on the musical style vs just location. Like you said, to me they're like a Louisiana gumbo mix - bayou as well. But definitely not in the style of "southern rock". Another example I use is Tom Petty is from Florida, but Tom Petty (and The Heartbreakers) is not southern rock. A genre, not strictly built because the band is from the south, if that makes sense.

Nice list Alan! I would also consider the Rossington Collins Band, Sea Level and the Dixie Dregs, although I could see one classifying Sea Level and Dixie Dregs as more fusion based than southern rock based.

As a southern boy, my favorite southern rock band is TRex. I love Wet Willie. Dripping Wet was recorded at the Warehouse. Will not hard rock, one of my all time favorites is Delaney and Bonnie. Motel Shot is a classic.

I really enjoyed this video. Some underrated and obscure Southern Rock artists I'd like to mention include Stillwater, Hydra, Grinderswitch, Nantucket, Doc Holliday, Webb Wilder, Arc Angels (feat. Charlie Sexton, Chris Layton and Doyle Bramhall II,) Bloodline, Sweet Vine, Cravin Melon, Storyville, Jolene, Jason And The Scorchers and Omar And The Howlers.

Wow, another great video. Being a big Southern Rocker myself, I'm glad you mentioned Skynyrd, the Allman Bros., and Marshall Tucker, but I would definitely included ARS, and .38 Special. Also, I agree with your choice of Bring It Back Alive from the Outlaws. (I personally think it's one of the greatest live albums of all time). One other thing, and I'm sure that I'm in the minority here, but I think Hatchets' Locked and Loaded is another great live album. (I've always liked Phil McCormack over Danny Joe Brown). Anyway, enjoyed the video. Thank you.

Thanks so much - I'm a big fan of ARS and a lesser fan of .38 Special, but for me just outside the top 10. I've never heard those later day Hatchet albums, sorry to say. I've heard good things about them, but I've also never heard the later day Skynyrd albums either. Psychologically bothers me...but that's probably unfair since the music is generally considered pretty good. I'll have to open my mind more for it. Thanks for the suggestion.

"Hard To Handle" is the best cover ( Black Crowes ) of that killer tune.. Ever ! Well.. there are some other great ones too, including Otis Redding's rippin' good version ✌

I'm so with you completely. Had to limit my list. I'm a fan of ARS (I showed that complete boxset of theirs). I'm a fan of BOA, but Dandy's vocals are certainly an acquired taste (especially for newbies - lol). That first Volunteer Jam album by CDB is a personal favorate - I love it. What a great retro release. That Carolina Dreams '77 release is also amazing - I saw that tour. Thanks so much.

To me the perfect place to start for a newbie would be Skynyrd's One More From the Road. It has everything that makes southern rock great. All the classic Skynyrd songs are made even better on that album. Also, great call on that Henry Paul Band album! It is very underrated.

As a very big Allman Brothers Band fan, who practically wore out the grooves on “Brothers and Sisters,” I’m glad you pointed out that the album does not represent the essence of what made The Brothers the most significant southern rock band (IMHO). The album is one of my all-time favorites by any band in any genre, but, as you said, the band’s trademark is its masterful dual guitar work (together with Gregg’s uniquely soulful vocals and his tasty playing on his Hammond). So, I totally agree with you about how the alternative albums you suggested are much better indicators of what the band is about. That, of course, takes nothing away from the great Chuck Leavell’s piano playing on “Brothers and Sisters.” He is just perfect whenever he tickles the ivories on that LP. As for the albums you picked from Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Charlie Daniels Band, The Marshall Tucker Band, The Outlaws, Wet Willie, Molly Hatchet and The Black Crowes, I think that they’re all great choices for newbies. I’ll trust your judgment when it comes to Blackberry Smoke and The Henry Paul Band, as I’ve heard very little of their music. I’m also in agreement with you about ZZ Top and Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers not being southern rock bands - with regard to anything other than their respective states of origin. ZZ Top is a buffet comprised of hard rock, blues rock and boogie woogie - the likes of which is served up by no other band out there. Petty and his band’s straightforward, mostly heartland rock sounds nothing like what the other good old boys, if you will, are playing.

Thanks so much as always - as a huge Allman Brothers fan, I'm so glad you picked up and agreed with my comment. I LOVE Brothers and Sisters and consider it an all-time classic and no fluke that it was such a huge hit - their biggest by far actually. I love Chuck Leavell's influence on the band at that time (he's also done an amazing job with The Stones for decades now). But it's such a different Allman Brothers Band sound. Can just compare Wipe The Windows live album to Fillmore or the later day live albums with Derek Trucks or Warren Haynes or even Enlightened Rogues era. Like night and day - so different. And of course short lived as Win, Lose or Draw killed the band shortly thereafter and they went back eventually to the twin guitars...thankfully. You may want to give Grey Ghost from Henry Paul a listen - a fantastic southern rock classic - especially if you like The Outlaws.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow I really appreciate your knowledge in pointing out how the music of The Allman Brothers Band has varied, sometimes greatly, throughout the years based on which lineup has played on what album. My first taste of the band came from its debut album, which I had on cassette. So, for me, like for all of the band’s very long time fans that I have personally known, the dual guitars of Duane and Dickie cast my favorite mold of the band. Still, like you, Alan, I LOVE the anomaly that is “Brothers and Sisters.” Yes, Chuck is a very special piano player, whom I loved seeing perform with both The Brothers and many more times with The Rolling Stones. It’s no wonder that his resume also includes playing with Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, George Harrison and John Mayer, among others. But, ultimately, as you know, the dual guitars are the ideal configuration for conveying the amalgamation of rock, blues, jazz and country that sets The Brothers very far apart from all the other southern rock bands (IMHO, of course).

@@ronalaurence4105 So well said. My first exposure to the Allmans came from Brothers And Sisters and they I bought The Road Goes On Forever on vinyl...and I was in love. I was too young. But I found it shocking that the first two Allman's albums (which are incredible) were not hits in America. It took Live At The Fillmore East for them to break America. I was too young at the time. I guess they were ahead of their time to get radio play or magazine coverage, until Fillmore East. Just interesting. Thanks.

Some I have requested that. Though when I’ve showed them in the past didn’t seem to get much interest. I think it’s really cool and pretty unique but I think I’m in the minority. Will see how it goes.

I'd have the Atlanta Rhythm Section in my top 10. The album I'd recommend is Red Tape. I remember browsing in a record store in Halifax, Nova Scotia early on a Saturday morning and they had this on the turntable. I went upside down when the bass solo on Another Man's Woman played. I went directly to the clerk and said "what is this ?" and bought it on the spot. Great record!

@TheAlanRosenbergShow Alan, it came to me later. Another band that deserves some love is Cowboy. Brought to Macon and signed to Capricorn on Duane Allman's recommendation. Lighter country rock a la Eagles but from the south rather than the left coast. Their best album, in my opinion,is 5'll Getcha Ten. Includes the beautiful Please Be With Me, his dobro solo, i believe, his last recorded work. Cowboy were also Gregg Allman's backing band on the Laid Back tour and on the live album from that tour.

Nice review on Southern Rock. My favorite is the original Lynard Skynard band. May they all R.I.P. No mention of The Band although they technically weren’t from the South they incorporated that Southern sound.

Tom Petty is also from Florida but I nor anyone else I’ve ever seen call Petty and The Heartbreakers a southern rock band. It’s more than location.

Very interesting. You might think that a boy from South London would have little time for Southern Rock, but not so. I have some Skynyrd, Marshall Tucker & Grinderswitch albums from way way back, saw Skynyrd a couple of times, but no Charlie Daniels, who I know of but have never, knowingly, heard. So, on your recommendation, I shall soon own Fire on the Mountain. I thank you.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Alan, based on the fact that, if I look at it one way, most of my life has been about spreading The Music, and I have a hunch that your musical experience is not dissimilar, and thus it's nice to know what people think of the music one has spread, you might like a bit more than on my previous comment. Thus, No Place To Go, after four listens: I love the nuanced keyboard solo only a few minutes in, the later change of tempo is perfect, is it not, guitar is great all the way through, the bass was the first thing my missus picked up on, and the end reminds me a little of Whippin' Post, covered by FZ of course. It's ever so good. Am currently listening to Franklin Limestone, which I am getting rather fond of - didn't I mention I picked up the Trilogy Pt 1 with Fire on the Mountain, Nightrider & High Lonesome? No? Must have forgotten. Heh heh. Maybe one day I will get to introduce you to some British fiddle players you may, or may not be aware of (actually, the two Charlie Daniels songs I have so far picked up on are fiddleless, I think. But that isn't the point). And finally, a question. One of my guitar heroes for more than fifty years now has been the American guitarist Jerry Donahue (now, sadly, stroke-ridden). Do you know his work?

@@martinstarnes2237 Found your post - thanks for letting me know. Never heard of Trilogy Pt 1. What is that - like a compilation of the three albums. I also love Nightrider, which came after Fire On The Moutain. Anything would be a slight dip after that album. I love Franklin Limestone. Another great story song on that album is Willie Jones - love that one. Actually many great songs on that album - Birmingham Blues is amazing. High Lonesome also a bit of a dip after Saddle Tramp but the title tramp is an all time favorite of mine. Billy The Kid is great as well. Been a while, but I think Franklin Limestone is the Tommy Crain song on that album - yea - love that track.

If you’ve never heard the Charlie Daniels song “Reflections” - take a listen. It’s a total rip off of Tull’s We Used to Know! Much more so than Hotel California. I saw the Allmans on the Brothers and Sisters tour. Grew show Hurry Sundown was the third album by the Outlaws and I agree with you on them.. Blackfoot “Strikes” is a really good album.

Interesting, I've heard Reflections countless times - used to be a highlight of their live show at that time - had a screen and would show Janis Joplin, Hendrix etc. I never made the connection to We Use To Know. Personally I can't imagine it being a conscious thing from Charlie Daniels. Wipe The Windows, Check The Oil, Dollar Gas was the official live album from that time period.

You're absolutely wrong about ZZ Top because their first 4-5 albums are straight up Texas Blues/Rock records. They ABSOLUTELY should be included in this context of southern rock bands when you specifically consider their early career. Also neither you or the other guy didn't mention Johnny Winter. Winter had several great hard rock albums with of course a southern edge because Johnny was a Texas blues master.

I'm a fan of Johnny Winter but I would never consider him part of the southern rock scene. Some people do put ZZ Top as part of "southern rock". I have those early ZZ Top albums, and they're pretty great to me too, but I still wouldn't include them as "southern rock". But that's me.

It really was - was the greatest time. Radio played southern rock all the time, the bands all would play here and many would headline the biggest arena's including Nassau Coliseum and Madison Square Garden. And 2nd / 3rd tier bands would play smaller places - colleges and clubs - amazing time.

Disappointed that Atlanta Rhythm Section's "Dog Days" and/or "Red Tape" are missing here.I kinda liked CDB, but was put off by his evangelizing and gun fanaticism. Skynyrd is a no brainer, but I'd have to go with the infamous "Street Survivors".because of Steve Gaines. It's hard to go wrong with The Allman Brothers unless you misfire with the Arista albums. Molly Hatchet needs a box set of their best stuff from their various lineups, Outlaws Bring 'em Back Alive" is as good a live album as southern rock has produced, aside from "The ABB at Fillmore East". All in all, a solid lineup.

I really like ARS. Have that complete boxset. Just outside my top ten. Saw them in concert in the 70s. We’re great. Molly hatchet box is s great idea. Throw in the hard to find Danny Joe Brown album too. Street Survivors. Fantastic as well. Gotta separate musically that early rocking CDB from the later day stuff I figure.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow I have DJB on both vinyl & CD. It's a real winner.I met Danny in Houston in 1993. He was a riot, but kind of a sad case, being both and alcoholic and diabetic, Terrific singer.

@@derhandtrommler Wow - that's so nice of you, but I'd never want to put you out like that, and boxing and shipping. I'm always looking for the CD in the wild and I never see it. I've actually forgotten about it for years - you reminded me about it. My roommate in college had it and we played it a lot. I'll start specifically re-looking for it on vinyl in the wild. Gotta be out there somewhere...lol. Thanks so much for your kindness and generosity.

I have some Hydra on compilation albums - sound good. I've heard great things about first Potliquor album - never see it out in the wild - on the lookout for it. Love ARS, but for me outside the top 10.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow let's add zakk wyldes pride and glory to the mix. Also, zakk sabbath is terrific. Everything I wanted sabbath to be. While zakk doesn't have the unlimited dimensions of vai and Buckethead, he works well within the parameters of metal . You've heard his riffs before, but heard again on Sabbath and both sound fresh and exciting. Speaking of exciting are you familiar with world music guitarist Lawson Rollins? Check out his release elevation featuring acoustic guest star Buckethead. Fierce acoustic duets here

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Lawson Rollins would fall under the same world music guitar based that al dimeola has been mining. Lawson above a stage tho. Not as good as di meola an d buckethead who does acoustic duets with Rollins. Like vai,Buckethead has no limits musically. That leads into today's weed and seed swapped out for Buckethead monsters and robots eva Cassidy time after time. House martins now that's what I call quite good little feat electric lycanthrope best of boss town sound comp featuring beacon Street unions the clown died on Marvin gardens as well as songs by Orpheus ultimate spinach and earth opera. And finally smith a group called smith and minus plus twofer featuring the troubled singer Gayle McCormick who hearts ann Wilson credits as a major influence

@@SpenceCurry Just when I think I know music well Spence, you sure school me - wow. I only know Buckethead from his time in Guns, and I wasn't a big fan. From what I've read he's a bit....well....way out there. Electric Lycanthrope is classic - have that one from the Feat. Thanks as always.
