The Montrose albums are uneven (except for the debut) but all feature some fantastic tracks. Try to find the fifth studio album, Mean (it's a grower, i promise)...it's essentially a bookend to their first album 15 years after the fact. The Speed Of Sound features two outstanding tracks with Zero G and Outer Marker Inbound. Also, look for RM on the Guitar Speak album (vol one) along with West, Howe and others. Tangerine Dream's soundtrack for the film, Thief (James Caan) is very cool. 🎶

Interesting list! By 1994, I'd moved away from most rock music - didn't connect with the newer styles coming through - and started listening to more folky/acoustic things so I should imagine my list of favourites will look like a bunch of obscure outliers with the odd glance at the mainstream but hey ho, in for a penny....🙂 1. Ellis Paul - Stories (singer-songwriter from Maine) 2. To Hell With Burgundy - 3 (UK acoustic rock trio) 3. Crosby, Stills & Nash - After The Storm 4. Show Of Hands - Beat about The Bush (contemporary folk duo from the West Country. Member Phil Beer played on Steel Wheels) 5. The New Bushbury Mountain Daredevils - Bushbury Mountain (county-rock band from Birmingham, UK) 6. Tanglefoot - Saturday Night On Hardwood Lake (harmony drenched Canadian acoustic folk-rock) 7. Press Gang - Burning Boats (Rocked up contemporary & traditional folk) 8. William Pint & Felicia Dale (Seattle based nautical folk often featuring hurdy-gurdy as a lead instrument 9. Robert Earl Keen - Gringo Honeymoon (Texan country/folk singer-songwriter) 10. Tom Pacheco - Luck Of Angels (Woodstock-based singer-songwriter who had chart hits in Norway, weirdly enough) 11. Barbara Dickson - (more famous for being a star of musicals, this was a return to her folk club roots) 12. Eddy Morton - (acoustic singer-songwriter, also a member of the New Bushbury Mountain Daredevils) 13. Magpie Lane - Speed The Plough (defiantly traditional folk from Oxford) 14. Red Jasper - A Winter's Tale (prog band often compared to Jethro Tull but in reality, aside from an eccentric frontman, the similarities are superficial) 15. Katell Keineg - O Seasons O Castles (Welsh/Breton contemporary singer-songwriter) 16. Clarion- From The Oak ( Fairport inspired folk-rock) 17. Attacco Decente - Crystal Night (intense acoustic pop, featuring the hammered dulcimer) 18. Seven Little Sisters - Cow Trousers (crusty, high-tempo acoustic folk-rock in the style of The Levellers) 19. The Enid - Tripping The Light Fantastic 20. Rod Clements - One Track Mind (solo album from Lindisfarne multi-instrumentalist)

Wow do I feel musically ignorant. Out of your list of 20 (and thanks for your wonderful descriptions), I only "know" of one artist - CSN, and I've never listened to After The Storm. I'm not sure why i never picked it up as of course I'm a fan, but i guess i kind of gave up on most of their later day solo work, and After The Storm and Live It Up (couldn't buy that album for the cover alone...lol). I know some Lindisfarne, heard of The Enid, Robert Earl Keen and that's about it. How cool about Phil Beer playing on "Blinded By Love" - I actually always liked that song - nice work on it. Thanks again for sharing such great knowledge and recommendations.

Well, I think there may be some doubt as to whether or not Under Wraps is Jethro Tull's worst album inasmuch as I'd rate it in my Tull top ten.🙂 Love 1984. Possibly my favourite year for music. As your choices show, it was an extremely varied year. My top twenty (not so varied! 🙂) might look something like this: 1. Toto - Isolation 2. Al Stewart - Russians & Americans (UK version) 3. REO Speedwagon - Wheels Are Turnin' 4. 38 Special - Tour de Force 5. White Sister - S/T 6. Barclay James Harvest - Victims Of Circumstance 7. Nanci Griffith - Once In A Very Blue Moon 8. Survivor - Vital Signs 9. Juice Newton - Can't Wait All Night 10. Dan Fogelberg - Windows & Walls 11. Jethro Tull - Under Wraps 12. Chris de Burgh - Man On The Line 13. Marillion - Fugazi 14. Billy Satellite - S/T 15. Stephen Stills - Right By You 16. The Cars - Heartbeat City 17. Van Stephenson - Righteous Anger 18. Big Country - Steeltown 19. Camel - Stationary Traveller 20. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Plain Dirt Fashion

Ronnie Montrose for $1 is a steal ... superb album by a wonderful guitarist ... start with Zero G (you will love it) ... a great rabbit hole to go down if you want to check out the rest of his solo catalogue (and the work he did with Gamma is also great) .... Nazareth, for me, are a great Friday night, beer in hand, band ... just "works" ... sure it's pretty basic at times but, when they hit the sweet spot, you can't help but groove along. Homecoming was also released on DVD .... features local lad, Jimmy Murrison from Aberdeen, who first played on the Mr Boogaloo album (1998) and remains with them to this day. That show is wholly representative of the band at the time .. great rocky version of Holiday on it ... I have the full catalogue on CD ... it's not for everyone ... but Malice in Wonderland, produced by Jeff "Skunk" Baxter of the Doobie Brothers, is just a great, polished, album (Zal Cleminson from Sensational Alex Harvey Band) is also adding wonderful 2nd guitar to the album ... it is my "go to" Nazareth release (I like everything from 1976 through mid '80's, the S'Naz live album (great) and No Jive from early 1990's) .... anything by Hall and Oates, provided the audio fidelity is good, is always worth listening to ... Abandoned Lunceonette is just a wonderful studio album .... CMcG, Aberdeen, Scotland

Thanks so much. I'm excited about the Montrose rabbit hole. I recently bought a book on Montrose by Martin Popoff that I'll read and did into his catalog. The only album I knew was the classic first Montrose album. The book looks nice so should be a fun experience. I figured this is a good Nazareth album "to start". I used to have Hair of The Dog - don't know why I got rid of it decades ago. Perhaps another rabbit hole. I saw them once live and were good. I already have Abandoned Luncheonette - certainly a favorite Hall and Oates album of mine. Thanks so much for your expertise.

The first time I saw Neil Young was with the Shocking Pinks in 1983. He played solo during set one and came out with the Shocking Pinks in set two all dressed like Neil on the album cover. I remember after every song he'd pull a comb out of his blazer pocket, comb his hair back and give it to a girl in the front in a Elvis type style. I loved that album and loved the show. Wonderin' was first done by Neil Young & Crazy Horse in the early 70s. It's on Live At The Fillmore which came out in the early 2000's. That Elvis Costello promo is fascinating. Only once in my country I saw Who's Zoo on CD in the year 2000 and they asked for 100 dollars for it (the week after seeing it they had already sold it). last month I saw it on vinyl in two record shops (one in NY and other in Tokyo) around $50. The interesting thing for me about these studio bootlegs is that the mixes they officially released are not the same. Interesting ranking. For me, their mid-'80s albums are tops. That's when they were writing songs and making sounds no one had ever heard before. Achtung Baby is also a classic, but it's post-modern. It's a reaction to what they were hearing around them at the time, namely industrial music and the Manchester sound. With War, Unforgettable Fire, and Joshua Tree, it was *U2* that was forcing everyone *else* to react.

I've bought several foreign films from Criterion. I've also would buy a Criterion film which I haven't seen, but have read the description and felt the description was interesting enough to buy the film. On running commentary, I turned that on for a film I was watching (not Criterion) and the movie dialog was lowered while the person was talking over the film. After that, never bothered turning on listening to the commentary again. On part 1 of your Criterion Collection, you mentioned that some of the special features on laserdiscs weren't transferred over to DVD/BLU-RAY. I was thinking a few issues with that: a) studio lost the features b) features deteriorated in the studios vault c) accidently destroyed d) licensing expired to Criterion e) licensing fee went up so much, Criterion passed (my opinion - the mostly likely scenario). Of course, I could be wrong and the studio simply didn't want to license out the missed features because they were going to re-release the films and add those features onto their DVD/BLU-RAY.
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow 3 күн бұрын
Yea - could be any or all of those reasons. But I know over the years where I've heard that certain laserdisc features never transferred over to the DVD/ Blu-Ray releases. In fact there are some films that were released on laserdisc that never made it to dvd / blu-ray - or in the same release (music was changed etc), because rights were lost or got too expensive etc. As for running commentaries - they're not all great. Some will do that where the film soundtrack lowers for the commentary and then raises back when no commentary. Some have non-stop talking - especially when they're are a few people on the commentary.

@@TheAlanRosenbergShow Forgot about licensing music. That's a major issue. Studios will substitute a cover version because the licensing fee is too high. Sometimes, substitute a different song. Usually, reviews of a upcoming release will point that out and leave it to the buyer if they want to buy the movie or not. There are tons of movies which haven't been release in any media because it's obscure, not popular with the movie audience (even though they know of it), or simply lost. At this time of national crisis, Im glad you have your priorities straight...... getting out Criterion part 2😂. I have a feeling you are telling us something with the T-shirt you're wearing. As you can probably guess, I I am a huge John Waters and Divine fan. I have been fortunate enough to have met both and they were nice nice enough to autograph items for me. I remember the scratch and sniff at the movies. I guess you know that a new Spinal Tap moving is being made. Some of it was recently filmed here in New Orleans.

Hi Alan - Mark Knopfler eh. Well I have lots of Dire Straits, and his solo stuff. To me his music is all of a similar pace, he does this mumbling shuffle, nice guitar, but what I do find is that on a lot of his stuff, particularly the Celtic stuff I always have the feeling that I've heard the melody before !! and lets face it with Celtic music there's every chance of that. Am not all in a Knopfler, he's a fine guitar player, but the music feels samey and too slow, and you cant hear the lyrics that well. For once I understand why he hasnt broken through in America, he just doesnt appeal to the masses at all. I guess he's at a stage where he can put out what he wants and not give a shit - similar Neil Young. Am a big fan but its quantity over quality for me - and has been for a looooooong looooong time !! Take care Cya

@@douglasweston126 I hear you. I kind of hinted at that in my video. His solo stuff is very interchangeable. Hard to tell one album from the next and all a similar tone and feel. Still enjoyable but not on the level of Straits.

Of course the great Mark Knopfler did the soundtrack to The Princess Bride. My favorite Robocop line "I'd buy that for a dollar!" Kurtwood Smith played one of the greatest villains of all time in that film. A bearded Scorsese appears in Taxi Driver. Spinal Tap always goes to 11. So many cool moments, and cameos.

Knopfler sure did - I have all his soundtrack albums and that's another great one for a great film. Robocop was my favorite movie of the year the year it came out. Was thrilled to get the Criterion laserdisc - still a fantastic movie (great quote by the way). Scorcese was so creepy in his walk on part. Spinal Tap - as you said - the best of it's kind. Thanks. Alan

It's nice to see people who are this passionate about movies. This is a quality collection, Alan. One question, though--do you have like 20 or 30 laserdisc players? Or do you know how to fix them? What do you do if one breaks?
@TheAlanRosenbergShow
@TheAlanRosenbergShow 3 күн бұрын
Thanks great question - Sad but true but decades ago, my laserdisc player broke and I sold like 90 percent of my collection. Then I found a working player and rebought all these laserdiscs - but luckily I find them all over for very cheap. Then I bought another player. Then one player broke and I brought it to a repair shop and he fixed it. I currently have 2 working players and one that doesn't work. Hopefully they'll last. Best, Alan

I'm a huge fan of Metamorphosis. Such an enjoyable listenable album. I've listened to it steady ever since it first came out in 1975. Jiving Sister Fanny was recorded at the legendary Olympic sessions from 1969 and Taylor is all over it. Love that song - though the lyrics are probably just a rough go through - guide vocal type thing. Great song.
