Be still, and know that I am God.
Psalm 45(46):11
When the heart has acquired stillness it will perceive the heights and depth of knowledge; the ear of the still intellect will be made to hear marvelous things from God.
From the Philokalia
More than all things love silence: it brings you a fruit that the tongue cannot describe. In the beginning we have to force ourselves to be silent. But then there is born something that draws us to silence. May God give you an experience of this “something” that is born of silence. If only you practice this, untold light will dawn on you in consequence, and after a while a certain sweetness is born in the heart of this exercise and the body is drawn almost by force to remain in silence.
Silence like sunlight will illuminate you in God, and will deliver you from the phantoms of ignorance. Silence will unite you with God Himself.
St Isaac of Syria
The lover of silence draws close to God. He talks to Him in secret and God enlightens him. Jesus, by His silence, shamed Pilate; and a man, by his stillness, conquers vainglory.
St John Climacus
Timely silence is precious, for it is nothing less than the mother of the wisest thoughts.
St Diadochos of Photiki
Behold, my beloved, I have shown you the power of silence, how thoroughly it heals and how fully pleasing it is to God. Know that it was by silence that the Saints grew and that the power of God dwelt in them. It was by silence that the mysteries of God were known to them.
Abba Ammonas
Go out tomorrow and stand on the mountain before the Lord; and behold, the Lord will pass by, and before the Lord, a great and powerful wind will be rending the mountains and shattering the rocks; but the Lord will not be in the wind. After the wind, an earthquake, but the Lord will not be in the earthquake. After the earthquake, there will be a fire, but the Lord will not be in the fire. After the fire, there will be a sound of a gentle breeze, and the Lord will be there.
3 Kingdoms 19:11-12 (Septuagint)
God Himself revealed to the great prophet that His deeds are done without noise and menacing manifestations, but in silence, like a cool breeze. Remember this, remember that grace-filled silence and peace are the seal of the deeds of God.
St. Luke, Archbishop of Simferopol and All Crimea
But I call upon You day and night: come dwell in my soul and close all those places where my enemies can enter. Make the cavern of my soul empty and silent, so that no one from the world will want to enter it. Oh my soul, cavern of eternity, never permit temporal thieves to enter you and kindle their fire within you. Keep quiet when they shout to you. Stay still, when they bang on you. And patiently await your Master. For He will truly come.
St Nicolai Velimirovich, “Prayers by the Lake”
The highest form of prayer is to stand silently in awe before God.
St. Isaac the Syrian
