Stardust City Rag made me stop watching Picard, I haven't gone back to it yet. I might someday. But killing off Icheb was just so not necessary, there are so many other ways you can develop Seven of Nine's character.

Icheb's death at least had some meaning to it in setting up Seven's story. But they should have delved into it more - that the problem with shorter seasons. And having Riker and Troi's son die was tragic but hugely important to their storyline and the storyline of that season. Also this is a grief that many people go through, so it's great that it's represented in Trek. Hugh's death however was unnecessary and brought nothing at all to the story.

Yeah, they did Hugh dirty. I cried so much when he died, not only because he died, but mostly because the character was done dirty.

You just know she watches him sleep, at night, in his quarters. Sitting in some dark corner of his cabin. Visible only by the soft glow of her cigarette. Or the exterior, for that matter. A double saucer section with space between is just crazy. You want to go from 10-Forward (which I assume has a different name, or maybe that's the "mess hall" they seem to spend all their time in) to the Bridge? Okay, first go ALL the way around the outer saucer section to the rear section. Now go into the "neck" section. Now you can finally go to the inner saucer section. And from what I can see, you have to go THROUGH THE BRIDGE to access the inner saucer. What?! No wonder Linus got lost trying to teleport to the mess hall once they got the new upgraded badges in the future. I won't even touch on the spinning thing, that's just a plate on top and bottom, they could have still done that with a proper saucer. And don't even get me started on that stunt they pulled disconnecting the nacelles somehow improving maneuverability.

I thought everything on Discovery was designed by a child. The new Klingon ships look ridiculous.

Yeah, I don't know if it was the worst but it pissed me off for a few reasons. Tony Todd as Kurn gave us a glimpse as to what Worf would be like if he was raised a Klingon. He is also an awesome actor, I have no idea why the show didn't utilize him more as a recurring character. It also would have been fitting if he was the one to challenge and kill Gowron considering it was Kurn who supported him and put him in power to begin with. Gowron owed Kurn everything and he used Worf as an excuse to remove him from power.

I suspect that Seven of Nine to become somewhat of a problem in Seasons 2 of Picard as she has a violent, vengeful streak. This is going to clash with Picard's Starfleet sensibilities and will most likely play a big part of the plot for Seasons 2 imo. Especially when Picard discovers what Seven of Nine has been doing behind his back. Right now he's probably not aware that she has killed A LOT of people.

Pretty funny considering she never met Hugh in the show and they clearly just added that line with ADR afterwards.

That's not surprising at all. While Star Trek is overall a pretty interesting concept and fun to watch, the fact remains that it is often times used as a platform to push liberal idealism, and liberal idealists are very good at ignoring inconvenient and embarassing little details like that. Case in point I was just watching a video a few weeks ago that was talking about how the media was covering the story of this woman and her poly amorous relationship with like four dudes and what a happy family they were, and how they were all equally the father of the baby she had and such. What wasn't so widely covered was when one of the dudes wound up in jail for abusing the child.

When you compress things too much you lose detail, and in communication terms that would be nuance, and when you lose nuance you lose the ability to properly think an idea through because everything becomes too black and white. I disagree with your point that 1984 is not that applicable to what is going on, however. What we see going on in the world today may not match 1984 down to the smallest of details, but many of the broader concepts in that book are very real. Even Fahrenheit 451 to a much lesser degree has some accuracy. Rather than the government actively destroying any and all books, the general populace is being trained over time to have a smaller and smaller attention span, to the point that many people choose not to read because they have no patience for it. I have never read Animal Farm or Brave New World so I can't speak to what they have to say.

@@Slopmaster Interestingly, Up The Long Ladder pissed me off for racism, but Code Of Honor pissed me off for other reasons, to the point that I genuinely forgot about the racist problems with it about halfway through the episode. Specifically, Code of Honor has Picard order a genocide because he was on hold for a couple of seconds (well, genocide is arguably too strong a term, but he does have Worf nuke the planet back into the stone age using photon torpedoes).

I do agree here, I find it an unsatisfactory last scene. The episode overall I like, but I would have loved just a moment of them arriving back in a Starfleet facility. Although thematically, Voyager was their home, and i do understand them staying on board for the closing shot

I mean... it kinda fits the entirety of Voyager's run in that way when you think about it. Inconsistent with itself, deus ex machina galore, weak ending, and no character development.

I like how SF Debris summed that up. Paraphrasing from memory; "It's like they saw all the complaints about DS9's finale having too much denouement and decided to overcompensate by not giving Voyager any."

I think there should have been at least one or two more episodes beyond Endgame. I mean, perhaps one that is like a "debriefing" of the crew, and then another one showing the crew re-integrating with life and family/friends back on Earth. It seems that with Endgame, it was a rather abrupt ending.

The only thing that makes it the worst is the unpleasing ending, so unnecessary and weird. The idea itself was not that bad.

It's main redeeming quality, at least to me, is that it very clearly shows that Evolution has no goals. It has no set path. Evolution simply is, and there is no guarantee that, whatever we become over the next billion years, we will still be sophisticated civilization builders. We are entirely beholden to Evolution and wherever circumstance takes us. Even if that means we become giant salamanders on some wet hot planet in the far reaches of the galaxy.

So simple Equation to solve for distance and you can see how close Q'onos would have to be to Earth. It's actually even worse, because the ship at This point in the series could really only hit warp 4.7 or 4.8 tops, and we really don't know for how long. Likely not four days. Which means they'd have to go maybe warp 4 (64c) and put Q'onos even closer (about 0.175 light years if my math is correct).

Incredibly disrespectful to the cast and everything the writers built up to that point. To be a Next Gen footnote. Just finished Enterprise (again) and it’s actually disheartening that it was even considered as an approach. Enterprise became one of the best Trek’s ever in seasons 3 and 4.

The Next Generation Writters had to “holo deck” Enterprise and its fans right in the ass on the way out the door. It’s unforgivable, just like Kennedy and Star Wars.

Many regional stations didn't want to air the IR kiss episode because they thought they'd lose viewers over it but when it finally aired, although the stations got complaints these were not nearly as many as they thought they'd recieve and their viewership didn't much change.

@@larrytrail2865 Actually it was the production company that didn't like Enterprise. They're the ones that killed off, and were most likely responsible for the ending. Well the jokes on them. Apparently within a year they ended up wiping about 50%-75% off their profit margins because of it. That's why they did the Abrams-verse reboots.

Those Romulan War books were excellent... I like to think that would have been the next season of the show had they not been canceled... And watch, some network suit said 'another season long war arc, advertisers won't buy it." But the fans would!

seems like it is only racist if you assume the alien race depicts a modern day race or culture. If you watch the episode thinking that the alien race depicts cultures that existed more in the past, rather than today, then it is an interesting view as you watch the crew try to deal with them on their terms...even though they don't agree with their ways. And dealing with alien cultures with very different values, values the crew don't share or even hate is pretty common in trek.

Sad that was one of the only couple of Tasha centric episodes...she could have been a compelling, albeit attractive, character...just saying...

Janeway did what she had to do for the good of the many (the rest of the crew), that's why she has the 4 pips, and - euphemistically - that's why she gets paid the big bucks

I liked it, every once in a while it makes the characters seem more real when they don't "win". There was no right choice for janeway, and while she reasoned that 2 officers were of more value than 1, the fact is...she wanted her friend back. She made an emotional choice. I don't think the writers meant for certain episodes to be "liked", they were meant to provoke thought and discussion.

Way back in 2369 Starfleet learned about the possibility of duplicating complete transporter patterns by using two annular confinement beams at a planet with a semi-permeable atmosphere during a lightning storm. The whole series has long held the importance of an individual's right to make their own decisions - as does ethics - and I'm sure Tuvix would have gladly risked death for the possibility of saving all 3 of them.

My jaw hit the ground watched “in the pale moon light! One of the best Trek episode ever made! In war all is fair to a point but sometimes one could reason their way thru anything.

I second Sub Rosa, though mostly because it felt like an entirely different show belonging to a series that wasn't Star Trek. Season Seven had some weird episodes. Remember that one with Data and the sun and moon and some other weird shit taking over the Enterprise and turning into a temple or something...yeah season seven was odd to say the least.

@@joshuaweston4489 I believe that episode (in case you were wondering) was called "Masks". Yeah I felt that one was a bit out of place. But in the last few episodes of TNG, it was pretty obvious they were running out of ideas although most ST series go for 6-7 seasons (with the exception of TOS which only was 3 seasons or around 36 episodes total I think).

Mohamed, I agree with everything you say. But I saw it in a different light. Picard is an outcast, a pariah. A bitter old man. And the Federation and Starfleet are heading towards moral ruin. So Picard and his motley crew go about what they do best - they strive for new ideals, new hopes, a new and better and more just future. It is the very thing that made ST great - not being in an idealistic society, but continually striving to make it so, even though it is quite difficult, and often costly, because reality is not as black-and-white and simple as we hope. And their task in this is also inward, as they face their own histories, their failures and their inner demons. They are initially all driven by anger. But we see them learning to forgive and accept not just each other, but also themselves. To me, this is Star Trek at its' purest. Yes, the beat of the drum sounds different in ST Picard, as it does in ST Below Decks. But it is - to me, anyway - very much the same drum that Gene Roddenberry sounded all those years ago.

I basically don't regard Star Trek: Picard as canon anymore then I regard the Star Wars Sequel trilogy as canon. Just because the producers and writers say something in canon doesn't mean you have to recognize it as canon.

Both Discovery and Picard looked at that, and chucked it in a bin so they could write yet more misery porn, because ALL THE REST of Sci-Fi isn't already doing that right? The exception is The Orville, which is somehow to closer to Trek than Trek is, while still presenting the issues.

The problem is picard and those like him are the exceptions. The federation is dystopian. It always has been. Gene's vision failed where telling a good human story begins.

Yep. This was the episode that finished me with 'Picard'. Not only because of the violence done to Icheb, but that a Starfleet Officer would simply 'disappear', and that there would be no search for, or outrage coming from Starfleet - or Janeway, for that matter. And although it may be addressed in later episodes - what about Chakotay? In the final episode(s) of 'Voyager'; it's said that he was never the same after Seven's death - the prevention of which seemed like one of Janeway's motivations for returning to a past Voyager. What happened there...?

That kind of gore just doesn't belong in Star Trek in my opinion. It added nothing to the scene. It was over the top and nearly ruined the show for me.

@@zunnoab all the examples shown in this video shown around that, vaporisations, Picard stabbed through the heart, numerous scenes of torture and gore through out the fanchise, as well as far more drawn out torture scenes show that this IS something that Trek has ALWAYS done. The only difference is that there is currently a huge antifandom industry surrounding any new iterations of old franchises. Trek, Star Wars, Transformers, numerous computer game franchises... If it's old enough to get a 'new' show or game then the antifandom has hundreds of you tubers and twitter twits willing to try making money off hating anything produced no matter the quality or the attention to Canon. I remember the first article I read about Picard spent almost two thousand words trashing everything about the show... and the only thing announced was the NAME. Trek has always screwed up the first season of any show. It takes time to build characters and find it's feet. TOS didn't start to shine until the end of the second season, TNG wasn't really worthy of any praise until the third season. DS9 plodded along trying not to be obvious that it was a rip off of Babylon 5 until it finally started finding it's own identity around mid season 2. Voyager was probably the best on arrival until Discovery, but still needed a lot of breaking in before it got good. Enterprise just tried to be the adventures of proto kirk before realising that that wouldn't be enough. It was cancelled just as it was becoming something special. Discovery, one of the most Canon-conscious entries in the entire franchise gets wholly criticised by folk claiming plot holes who just don't understand the lore themselves. Picard was good. Not great. It missed beats, started themes it then ignored or wrapped up too quickly and was massively too deferential to TNG characters who really didn't deserve it. Yet, again, first season. I expected Picard to get lost in nostalgia. The fact is Icheb was a dull, one dimensional character that was nothing more than an extension of 7 of 9's struggle to reclaim her humanity. It was wholly appropriate that he be sacrificed to explore a further character arc shift for 7. That it was a depiction of gore? Well what about Picard dissecting crew members to get borg components or the death of the borg queen to corrosive gas? It'd be nice to watch some of these franchises and the media around them without every comment section being solid walls of hate and factually incorrect criticism.

I think you really need to think deeply about being faced with opponents that you in no way an ever contend with, even in a guerilla war. Asymmetrical warfare is often the only method open to some people. There is nuance to terrorism, especially when a population allows the subjugation of others. If your country was taken over and you had no way of effectively fighting any kind of conventional war, what other options would you have to try to win back your freedom? This was also explored in the Reimagined Battlestar Galactica. Science Fiction should present these problems and give you space to make your own decisions, well good Science Fiction should.

@@Nevets1073 OK but you should clearly have been able to tell by the full content of what I said that my problem is *not* with asymetrical warfare or insurgency tactics. Hell, I don't even on a fundamental level take issue with some things *most* people do, such as assassination as a tactic. My problem is when those tactics stop caring about what is hit, or worse, go full Taliban/IRA and actively target non-combatants. There's no justification that'll square me with car-bombing an apartment or office building for instance. Something that deliberately targets a civilian for their little war is no longer a person and should be put down like a beast quick enough that anyone else even considering slipping that low rethinks their options.

From a sole in-universe point of view, I totally get your frustration about Data (also brownie points for pointing out that the "recreation from a single positron"-part is bullshit). However, I read an Interview with Brent Spiner (from the 90s or early 2000s I think) where he said he wanted the character Data to be killed off somehow, because he as an actor is aging and the character is not and he doesn't want to make excuses etc for why the actor is aging when Data shouldn't be. In the end, we not only got lame excuses in Picard's Season 3 but also nightmare-inducing CGI in season 1, sooo...two losses. Yay. I totally get Spiner's point and I really appreciate that he didn't want to reprise this wildly recognized character indefinitely and valued a believable story higher. I don't know if he changed his mind or was convinced that the tellings of ST: Picard were actually good but when I saw that they let Data FINALLY die in the end of Season one (despite him already having died way before...) I was okay with it. But that was more because I was so upset of Picard making Data alive again in the first place (despite what Brent Spiner wished for his character) and not because I thought it was a logical thing to do from an in-universe perspective. One could argue that Data asked to die, because it's the one human experience that he didn't have, but. Oh well. There are like a dozen reasons why that doesn't make sense at all I'd say.

The thing that ticked me off was the poor writing plus the actors appeared embarrassed to be in the poorly written show. The kiss didn’t even register to me as I was appalled by the acting and writing. And I saw it first-run.

Not arguing your points at all, but what seems to be left out is that it wasn't a consensual kiss. They were forced like puppets. They did not choose to kiss each other, it was like holding two dolls up next to each other face to face. So it wasn't meaningful with respect to the characters. When I saw it as a kid, I didn't even notice the interracial nature of it, I was appalled by the way each of the Enterprise crew were being manipulated against their will!

I watched the whole season just to see if it was a bad as I'd heard. . . it wasn't. It was worse.

For me, it's the *way* the ship met its end, Snake. First, why in the flying **** would you have the shield frequency displayed like that in engineering? It's kinda like posting the secure password on a bulletin board. And then, knowing that the battle section is about to blow up while they're in orbit around a planet, wouldn't you think they'd take the saucer section *away* from the planet, to avoid any chance of ending up in it's atmosphere/gravity well? I'd think you'd want to get clear of the planet ASAP, because you'd know the shock wave from the blast would cause a loss of control. Heck, I'm still trying to get somebody to explain to me where they got the Enterprise-A from at the end of ST:IV - The Voyage Home. Seriously, did Starfleet build a new, old-design ship or did they take an existing ship and re-name it?

@@charlied5953 I'm going to attempt to answer your Question about the Enterprise-A. I don't know if it's canon or not but it is generally accepted in Trek fandom that the Enterprise-A was suppose to be the USS Yorktown. Then upon the destruction of the original Enterprise the Yorktown was renamed.

SnakeVenom3000, the reason they destroyed the Enterprise-D in the first movie was that they wanted a new model. You see the Enterprise-D model was built for television. It was thought that that it was not detailed enough for movies. I disagree, I thought the Enterprise-D would have been fine for the movies, but that was the decision that was made.

It was annoying, if for no other reason but that it was something that they had done before in a Star Trek movie.

The original series was remastered high definition for Blu-Ray (and that is the version available on streaming servives) whereas Deep Space 9 has not been (and can not be as easily as it was edited together on 90s def video rather than on the film it was shot on).

They probably thought it was what the fans wanted. Back then, Enterprise was being heavily criticized by a segment of Star Trek fans I refer to as the "TNG snobs". While they've largely gone away, they were a very annoying part of the fan base that acted like anything that wasn't TNG was crap.

IMO, "Duet" was one of the very best ST episodes ever aired, (despite the obviously gratuitous or contractual O'Brien and Quark cameos). Yulin and Visitor _both_ gave what I consider to be Emmy-quality performances. In Yulin's long career I was so glad to see him get a starring role, and even though just a TV show, I think it may have been the best performance of his career. Of course, it's hard to be recognized for a great performance without a great script -- and this episode had it. Another of ST's finest episodes was TNG's "Inner Light". Notice, folks, how neither of these needed a lot of "spacey" stuff, and not a single phaser was fired. A great story works in any context. Also, any story that can choke me up must be good. I mean, someone would have to be some kind of stump not to be deeply moved by Picard playing that flute at the end, or when Marritza crumbled from his deception.

Honestly, neither of these came across as things to make me mad, they were just both REALLY BAD TV. Tuvix is actually pretty iconic for me at this point. It perfectly showcases just how unethical Janeway was. She always just did whatever she wanted and didn't really care about the consequences, just using "the Regulations" as a milk sop to justify things. Code of Honor, that one I couldn't believe made it on air. Was it actually *ist? No, but it was incredibly poorly written and acted and anyone with half a brain had to have suspected it would be attacked as *ist. Tracy Tormé actually suggesting it was supposed to be "1940s tribal Africa" themed make it feel like a false flag attack. "We want ratings from controversy but aren't skilled enough to write something truly worthy of controversy." Both of these were just sad, sad television.

so funny to me that fans will call the Trek they don't like "not real Star Trek." Star Trek covers an entire galaxy of content. countless characters and plots. You don't have to like them all. for example, I despise the Abrams Trek movies, so much. but even I acknowledge them as part of ST.

Yeah, that was an awful story and indicative of TNG's chaotic first season. Basically pointless story capped off by a needless "gross-out" scene that was obviously intended to generate some buzz.

I think while Course: Oblivian may have not been well received by some, I found it interesting because you have this problem of demolecularization that's occuring throughout the ship and crew but you are still not aware that this is the copied crew from a prior episode (when they landed on the Demon planet) so it keeps your interest (at least it did for me) until the end when you realize that it was the copied crew that the story was about. Yes it doesn't really fit much into the timeline (other than it occurs after Demon planet or whatever that episode was) but it also introduced the Slipstream drive as well (although this technology proves--later on--not to be as viable solution for getting home, a shown in "Timeless").

Yeah bad episode. But just a side note on that episode. Jon Bernthal from the first season of The Walking Dead ( Shane Walsh ) had a bit part in that episode. He played a “thug # 1” type of character. don’t think he even had any lines. Lol

DISCO IS DEAD!

I'll try to speculate on that without taking sides with or against it. It's the first Trek series made for the streaming age. As such, it started right in with long, not-so-episodic story arcs. Perhaps none of the issue taken with it can be concentrated against any one episode.

They did show it unedited on BBC Two during the third season's repeats after midnight on September 29, 2007.

I also challenge the Star Trek claim as Kirk doesn't really kiss Uhura, more pretends to. Which makes sense in the context of the episode as both them were being forced to humiliate themselves. But still not a genuine kiss.

In those segregation times it is quite remarkeble, that is an outtake where Shatner and Nichols are folling around with each other. You can see her slapping Shatner‘s butt. Heart warming to watch. No „ race“, no „Me Too“ mattered, just having a good time with each other.

My problem with Enterprise was that every episode was resolved by either using the transporter or the phasors. This was supposed to be man's 1st foray into deep space exploration and they were faster and better armed than almost every ship they encountered. The cast was good though, and I actually liked the final episode.
