I just got the book. As a retired therapist I’ve tried to figure out what was so endearing about BTS. I can speak for myself but they are loved by all ages, genders, and ethnicities. Thank you for your insight. I look forward to the next review.

@@ck1948 So, same age, lol. You know, what really puzzles me is the "countertransference", why do we emotionally react the way we do. I am aware of the countless projections, identifications ofc, but what in their music "reaches our heart"? Like you I wasn't into music before, art and literature were my thing. But maybe I am just daft. Though I did get into them because of the lyrics.

Really enjoyed hearing your view of the book. So many things stood out to me but I agree with you about them learning. Even after debut they simply changed from learning in the practice room to learning ‘on the job’ through performances. In typical BTS style they downplay their talents but BTS music and the way they market and promote themselves shows intelligence. They all possess an innate, natural ability for music and performance. The fact that J Hope had not rapped and the vocal line not sung prior to debut blew my mind. I’ve watched back some of their big award show performances and suddenly the expressions on their faces make more sense. BTS and ARMY being each others safe/happy place is also clear. This book also shows their strength of character that in-spite of the difficulties, the negativity and the pain they endured, it didn’t make them bitter or resentful they remained seven of the sweetest souls. I now need Bang Si Hyuk to release a book about his research , strategy and vision for BTS to fill in some more of the blanks 🙂

I had no expectations coming into the book because I'm new to BTS as of 7 months ago. I totally understand your point that the first chapter was focused on the mundane rather than celebrating how talented they are and when I read that it seemed very consistent with them as a group. What has always struck me is how connected they are to "real life" including regular people who are their fans. How real they seem. How they get joy from silly, "normal" life and interactions. How they get on a Weverse live and just talk to fans - even getting annoyed when fans don't treat them as human beings and being open about that. So Chapter 1 seemed like a very normal way to present themselves at the start of their story. Looking forward to the rest of the book.

I think it's rather good that the part about them getting ignored or hurt by people was included in the book cause common people like us need to know that even celebrities have to face struggles at their workplace just like us and that surviving in an entertainment industry is harder than it seems. Knowing that a group who has experienced the same kind of disheartening struggles that most of the people have to face at some point in their lives, has now became the most powerful group overcoming all the obstacles they faced, is a great source of inspiration. Btw, I really liked your review. Looking forward to more.

You are so eloquent! Thank you. I have ordered the book both in English and Korean. I look forward to your other thoughts. You have delved so deeply into the writings. Suga once said that he didn't know how they got along as each of them is so different. I have thought that God put them together to reach the millions of young people who were hurting so much. They are seven good, honest, intelligent men.

I personally think the reason they are so loved by everyone, no matter where you are, what part of the world you're in, is that they have never ever forgotten the hard, the tough times, the 7 or more living in a small dorm room. The learning to probably even like each other and get along, the teaching Jungkook to SHARE hahaha. That there is not ONE leader, so to speak, yes RM is the leader, but as a group, they all know how to dance sing, write music, they all depend on each other, they are all expected to pull their weight, and the practices. They have learned to laugh at and with each other and not take offense, they really are like 7 brothers, even though they no longer live together, after all 'children' do grow up and move away, they will always be family to each other and at any given point any of them can call each other up and say HEY want to go get coffee, a meal I have something I need to discuss and whoever they called will come and help out. They have never ever forgotten their roots, and trust me, they could forget and become arrogant and think OH WE'VE MADE IT. And having their own families probably grounding them also helps. This is just my opinion of them. And that is what makes them BTS, they have and will never forget the beginning and will (hopefully) always stay humble and kind.

Totally agree with your review of chapter 1. What a wonderful well written book. I'm currently on chp 3, I want give any spoilers. I recommend anyone that is a music lover and especially if you love BTS to read this book. We always knew the boys had it hard but to actually read about their struggles and to know their thoughts as they were just starting out makes me appreciate them more. They were teens thrown into a world they only had dreamed about, to read how alone they felt as they were mocked and ridiculed really got me in my feels.😢 But in spite of all the difficulties they took lemons and made lemonade. Don't let other people's disappointment in this book stop you from reading it. This is a modern day David vs Goliath story that has so many teachable moments that should not be missed. The problem is unfortunately or fortunately there are hours of video tape most or all have seen that contradict a small portion of the book, but to me I know from previous bios or origin stories things are subject to change when put in a book. Get past it and don't miss out on one of the greatest stories ever told. I like you doing review by chapters, also a live chat on KZfaq would be great. I'm old school Twitter scares me so I don't do it.

I am a grandma at the threshold of the 70s territory. It was my 3rd child- my late20s daughter during the pandemic who introduced me to this group whose faces all look alike with their chinky eyes, rather long faces but firm jaws. What peeved me that time was how my daughter really raved over them, enjoying their music and practically dancing to her favorite song, Mic Drop. At first, I really found everything so silly that she could relate to their songs, even singing them with a lot of gusto..even if the band's songs were sang mostly in Korean.. remembered my days in the late 60s when I myself was fantasizing my idol group, the Monkees- at least I understood every word in their lyrics as they sang in the universal language.. me & my 2 sisters actually love music and dancing- our generation was more the rock & disco- frequenters.. but this group of Korean boys! .. I almost said "no way!".. but when there was really nothing to do during the pandemic starting 2020- perhaps the only constructive thing that I did during those difficult times was when we had to be really creative and experimented on what we termed as Q-PAL ( Quarantine Play & Learn) where I passed the time with my 2 grandkids- who were increasingly getting bored staying home as the schools even the churches remained closed as we were in total lockdown.. my family eventually thought of turning our home into a daily pre- school-of- sorts in the afternoons:starting with a prayer- the 2 kids- then aged 7 (girl), the other 9 (boy) taking turns as Prayer leaders then starting the day with basic English- Math-Science lessons mixed with exercises viewed from the internet; then my husband would teach them do-it-yourself things like making trash containers from empty plastic gallons of water & urban gardening at our small converted open-air top deck then my K-pop daughter would teach them music & playing instruments: guitar, piano, keyboards even composing lyrics & baking cakes or making pasta.. while waiting for food to be cooked/prepared, my youngest child- mid20s son-Law student would do his part by playing with them at our smaller than half-sized basketball court- playing the game, scooter-ing, etc.. before the day would end, my daughter would spread the mat & do yoga with the kids, closing everything with the Angelus & the Prayer to End the Pandemic..yes! Those were days full of fun & learnings despite the worldwide gloom pervading then.. And then, this- "Life Goes On" followed by Spring Day then our own Alumnae Association Silver Anniversary graduates adopted "Dynamite" as their signature song for all celebrating Alumnae from the 50s upto the present grads during the 2022 Homecoming of our High School via online. Surprisingly, these batches- across the generations- took on DYNAMITE with a lot of enthusiasm & energy, despite the age gaps!..the virtual concert staged at the empty Seoul Olympics stadium by BTS with just screens reflecting faces of viewers- whom I later realized as ARMYs- really amazed me & made me recall 1988 when I led a broadcast team assigned to cover the Olympics LIVE. That BTS concert really blew me away - imagine the guts & the zeal of these 7 boys -almost imagining them to be hibernating at the height of the pandemic bur they were doing exactly the opposite- tirelessly working on new, better & what's more relatable music & lyrics that all peoples- regardless of "race, gender, age & creed"- would eventually adhere to. Yes! I am not really a full-fledged ARMY, unlike my daughter who has blossomed into becoming one, but I truly appreciate the minds, hearts & purpose- (mission entrusted to them, perhaps would be more appropriate)- of these 7 boys who rose from the embers to become shining beacons- let not the secular world get the better of you..All the best.. keep on being enlightened & bringing this light onwards in this dark world💜

Thank you for posting the chapter analysis! There's so much information in each chapter, that I feel like I miss things. I love how you point important themes out and explore individual character development and growth between members/as a group. 💗 As always, I'm struck my how humble the members are... V especially felt like he was ready and he wasn't motivated/good enough. Coming from that and looking at OT7 now... Such amazing human beings!💜

Thanks for doing your review. Beyond what you discussed in the video, I think a small part that helped them was not knowing how daunting the goal they set before them was. Another thought I had was just how resilient they are. The schedules they had was overwhelming. Chapter one didn’t focus on the fact that the members had to insert school into schedules that were already filled. I am in awe of the commitment to the music that they have.

Hi, i am a 2013 ARMY. i was there from the beginning and watched them closely. like you, i know most of the stuff they talked about in the book. most of the "new information" i got from this book is the insights I got on the eloquence of their speech, the way they process their thoughts in specific events, seemingly foreboding things around them that points to their destiny and things like that. part of the reason i did my review this way is because of that. i believe they wrote with that mindset in mind, that they want to take ARMY in their heads and in that space between the 7 of them. however, in my chapter 2 video, i will mention some thing connected to the events they mentioned in the book that SOME new ARMY might not know about. i couldn't say much in chapter 1 because those are all pre-debut.

I found your analysis to be rather strange? As if you were showing how well you could speak in poetic flowery terms. There is no professor marking your skills, so for me your videos would be more useful if you changed that approach. Just speak simply, directly, without long poetic dramatic speeches. Just get to the point is best for me. My book arrived today and I'm looking forward to start reading it in bed soon.
