It's so refreshing to hear genuine negatives about Japan without the 'Oh well, that's just the way it is here ♡' disclaimer. So many people forget that having a negative opinion about a few things doesn't mean you think the whole country and culture is trash 🙄 Good on you for telling it like it is, especially when it comes to a country like Japan that does indeed have wonderful aspects but it is also incredibly romanticised online

Yup would be interesting to see what's most "normal" like I know in Scandinavia and the surrounding countries in Europe it's rare that people would not take of their shoes when entering a home, but it seems in America where many houses have carpet covering the floor they don't take off their shoes? It's weird
@Helveteshit

Yeah I mean wedding registrys have helped with that problem somewhat making sure the gifts you get are at least things you want/will use - However, for most newly weds the straight up cash is likely way more beneficial to them.......

When we got married the cash we got was really useful to us. It helped on our honeymoon for spending money. 300 dollars is a lot, though. I was happy if someone could only give us a 20. At least they were trying to bless us.

wait serriosly you have to desplay all the wedding gifts over in the states what if someone was to get you a gift with the idea that it will keep the behind closed doors life going for a bit longer. i put this in them words just incase of any youngsters see this it aint so strait forward
@ttiger86
@ttiger86 3 жыл бұрын
@@lordi2009k I think when they talk about display they mean in your home? Bc you don’t have to display them. At the wedding everything is wrapped or I’m bags on the table so no one knows what someone got you. There’s no time to open the gifts at the wedding either. But if your in laws or mom comes over to your house after the wedding and finds out you’re not using that blender or toaster they so lovingly bought you, you know you’re going to hear about it.

I knew about the tattoo thing before I went to Japan, so I knew I couldn't go into certain places... but I still got caught out by it. I wore a singlet shirt to my hotel's gym for a workout (as you do) and got asked to change into a shirt that covers it. I don't begrudge it (i.e. not my place to tell other cultures how to live, so in their country I play by their rules), but you can't help but find it a little frustrating considering I'm Pacific Islander and it's legitimately cultural for us to have tattoos (i.e. the word literally comes from our languages).

There is still place that I would rather be bare feet like my own room, but keeping even a single room's floor flawless while bare feet is difficult, I have to sweep up or vacuum almost every other day to keep my bathroom and own room free of dust and hair and other random shit that happens to fall onto the ground that wasn't from my feet.

I think it's okay to give money for a wedding but the outrageous thing is the custom of having a set amount. You just can't except everybody to just have enough money to give to others. 30,000 Yen might be peaunuts to some but for others it's money they need to live. You can buy beautiful and usefull presents for way cheaper. Like, let them gift you a 30,000 Yen, 10,000 Yen or a nice red toaster for your red colour-schemed kitchen.

When I listen to joe addressing this issue, I giggled because I live in a multiracial country and chinese is one of them. Even the chinese in my country are very superstitious with number 4. Especially if they are running a business. If you have an apartment building, the floors will be numbered like these: 1, 2, 3, 3A, 5 and so on. For their car plate number, they'd rather pay thousands to have customized number than having the number 4 in it. While number 8 is considered to bring in wealth. I respect their custom and enjoy their new year festivals a lot. Just find it a bit weird about the numbers.

I've grown up around tattoos, my godfather is a tattoo artist and I had an apprenticeship with him in Scotland. I have two tattoos of my own (a small explosion behind my ear and a snake by my right ring finger). I'm planning on getting more, like the silhouette of a dragon on my back and the 00:00:00 from Unus Annus. Unless this rule (is that the right word, idk) is abolished in bathhouses etc or at the very least, us foreigners are exempt, I don't think I can move there.

I met a Japanese man with a full bodysuit on my second day in Tokyo. my friend and I are fairly heavily tattooed and a man in a valour tracksuit, wearing sunglasses approached us and asked about our tattoos in broken English. we had a little chat and he unzipped his tracksuit revealing a full bodysuit. Not a clue if he was yakuza or not but we were pretty shocked. he was really nice and polite, thanked us for our chat, and went on with his business.

@@janashinawa2895 -- Maybe location? My family is pretty big on onsens. I just walk around outside until they are done. We found one without a sign a number of years ago, and I went in. In the bathing area, everything was okay. Some young guys convinced themselves I was a professional wrestler. Once we got down into the actual hot spring area, it became clear that I was causing a disturbance. It was obvious from the stares that I was offending people. Some people even got up and left. I'm okay with it. I'm more of a shower guy, anyway. :-b

I paused and read the sign Joey flashed up about vloggers at bath houses and it looks like that specific one might make exceptions for visiting athletes. In personal experience, when I visited japan on a college trip, we stayed at a hotel that had an onsen in Sendai and they were very accommodating to us with tattoos. Basically they asked that we go later at night or earlier in the morning during off hours and we could stay as long as no one complained. Ended up working out great and the two Japanese ladies we met when we were in the onsen were very nice to us, regardless of tattoos.
