Technically it's a stolon, not a rhizome. Rhizomes (like ginger or turmeric) must always be buried vs stolons (like Philodendrons gloriosum; pastazanum; & dean mcdowell) should never be burried as they will rot. In the houseplant world we call plants with stolons terrestrial or creepers/crawlers as they grow along the forest floor. If Anubias grew up trees it would be called a vine as stolons grow horizontally. It's been fun learning a lot about aquariums from your channel. Thank you!

Actually, it’s neither of those two…it’s an “ADVENTITIOUS ROOT” or a TUBER that has a natural propensity to promote new terminal “baby plants”.

I love anubias! You've taught so many great tips...a new one for me was making sure the rhizome stays clear of detritus, etc. I didn't know the peace lily was related! I just bought one on clearance. I thought it was a great price to try growing out of the aquarium, but it is so healthy and still blooming, so I'm enjoying as a houseplant for now. Be proud you have a bloom after all this time! I just learned that nurseries give the plant a growth hormone so they force bloom for sale. It's a little harder to get a natural bloom after that. Congrats!! 🌱

So about the emerged growth... they do need humidity and not just spraying, they need constant high humidity. I have mine in and out of the water often, because my anubias are the perfect 'I need some green in my breeding tank' thing, and I have them all tied to some wood that is easy to carry around. When I don't have space in any of my tanks I just use a plastic (transparent!) bin with maybe 5cm water in and close the lid tight. Place them near a window or under a light and they will live just fine.

Hi Joanna, great video! I also love anubius and have had the same anubius barteri rhizome going since 1998 which is now in numerous aquariums. I think you hit the most critical tip which is not burying the rhizome, the second most critical advice, I think, is to keep it with fast growing plants (like hygro poly, hornwort, floaters, etc... ) to ensure that excess nutrients are sucked out quickly and algae doesn't cover the slow growing anubius. As the scape matures and the total volume of anubius increases I dial back the fast growers as the larger amount of anubius starts to sequester more nutrients. I've managed to get to a number of "end game" anubius scapes which were/are 100% anubius jungles and absolutely bullet proof. I would say they are my most stable tanks and I've actually been able to keep neons to the age of 8 + (still going) in one of the tanks. The one other tip I can add is for people who are having success with anubius. When new growth has shaded distant portions of the rhizome to the point where it is completely bare of leaves but still healthy, snap off the leafless portion of the rhizome (I like to use at least two inches) and put it in an extra aquarium that has low light and nutrients. After a few weeks little plantlets will start growing from the nodes of the rhizome. You can allow them to get as big as you like, but I like at least 3 leaves and some roots. When they have achieved this size I just pry them off with a finger nail and glue to wood or rocks and place in an open space in one of my aquariums. After doing this for a while I now have a 1 gallon aquarium dedicated to anubius rhizome plantlet starts. I just add bare rhizome as I discover it and remove any rotten rhizome and plantlets. I don't fertilize, I just keep the water topped up. It's been a factory for baby plants.

Anubias is just like all other stolonic aroids. I've divided the stolons of P. gloriosum, pastazanum, and dean mcdowell the same way. Coming into the aquarium world from the houseplant world I was excited to learn about aquatic aroids. But kind of sad that Anubius grows from stolons and won't vine up a moss pole as I have all my vining plants on moss poles.

I am new only since 10/27/22... but like you, I am coming to love this Plant. I have a few varieties in my tank, including that tiny one. I bought my first one because I noticed my Betta ignored the fake Betta Bed and the store suggested getting the midsized variety. My Betta loves sitting on it and under it. I added more of it and it is his favorite hide out place. Great job. Thanks for the tip about keeping the Rhyzome cleaned off. And, I do have one of those tiny floaters that must have got accidentally knocked off during my siphoning attempts. It is nice to know that I can reglue it back on one of the Driftwood. This time, I will stick it in a joint. :-)

I love Anubias. In 7 years of keeping the same 2 monster common/comet goldfish, it is the ONLY plant which they will not eat! I have them all over the tank, but I also have 1 massive clump that started as a single baby plant from Petco, and now it's the size of a softball. Absolutely the best beginner plant, especially for low-tech aquariums.

Awesome! My favorite. Something else ppl should know about Anubias… they’re essentially the ‘aquatic Philodendron’ (or Monstera, Anthurium, Pothos, etc.) equivalent, as they belong to the same family, Araceae-the aroids or arums. You know I had a bunch of different types for like, ten years, and I’m also a plant collector, and I always said to myself “wow, these Anubias sure look and behave like a mini Monstera,” without ever stopping for two minutes to look on Google or Wikipedia. Yep, my mind was blown to discover that. 🤔😂😂 And Cryptocorynes & Bucephalandra are aroids too! Crypts, to me, are like aquatic peace lilies or calla lilies. Both also aroids. They’re close, in form, growth habit, etc. Hardy, but don’t like being moved, and the lighting has to be just right.
@ChadGardenSinLA
@ChadGardenSinLA 5 ай бұрын
Since they have stolons I guess they behave more like P. gloriosum and pastazanum rather than a vining aroids like monstera or pothos. I also come from the houseplant world so it's been funny coming into the aquarium world seeing all the mislabeling of plants. Rhizomes (e.g. ginger and turmeric) always must be buried.

These things can grow really big if given space. Had one of these that was over 30 years old. It was gigantic. One thing I noticed was that once it hit the water surface that's when it started to bloom. In my tank we had old school light bulbs(it was long ago) and once the leaves got over the water they would often burn on the lights. The "flower" would dry out quickly and die off which is to be expected I guess. It's such a sturdy plant and never disappoints you. The leaves can get quite large but it takes a while. Bigger fish like pleco liked to hide under it as it had a "natural" cave and big leaves. Definitely one of my favorite aquatic plants.

If you are getting a spreading rhizome rot (like it has hopped from plant to plant and its not due to burring the rhizome) in your tank treat it with kanaplex and sequester your tools and nets so you dont spread, rhizome rot is very contagious and can hop to buce too.

I would like to make it a bare bottom tank but I would also like to put a plant that has big leaves on it like Anubis’s in some sort of a glass container in the middle of the tank. I have never had any luck growing plants in aquariums. And I don’t like the mask when they melt and believe die, and everything else. So I thought I would try to grow something in a container with the proper substrate and see how I did having a clean, sparkling aquarium means a lot to me. Do you have any ideas.? Thanks, Larry.

I 💚 Anubias plants! I also grow some peace lilies out the tops of my larger aquariums. By the way, my peace lilies that I grow as house plants do better grown in a bowl with rocks and aquarium water (leaves are out of the water) than they grow in soil. So you might want to try that. I also grow Anubias in little cover terrariums and in plastic containers - in and out of water. Anubias Nana Petite is my favorite variety of Anubias💚

hello. Does the rhisome need light or just the leaves. Reason asking is I have holy rock and have put the plants in the holes. So only leaves are exposed to light

Hi i have anubias in my 75 with a nicrew at about 35% strength but have always had trouble with black beard algae and it's only on the anubias. I also have java fern and other low light plants and don't get black beard algae. I'm baffled any ideas?

something that would be helpful to beginners i think would have been info on any sensitivities/preferences to certain PH or temperature in aquariums. like what's the lowest temp an anubias can survive in, or if it does well in any PH, since a lot of different fish species require different parameters.

Hello Joanna, ever run into an anubias petite that grew into a nana/barteri when emersed? I've had had this happen to one of mine. I'm wondering if it was even a petite to begin with. So frustrating.

Lol - never - but all Anubias start out real tiny and very hard to distinguish between them all when they’re babies ☺️

I have 3 anubias minima since a year ago. They are super-glued to my centerpiece driftwood. They have grown very well. However, none of my other plants were doing well because I only had the low-level lights in my hood that came with the kit. Then, last June, I bought a glass top and added a Stingray 2 light. Now all my plants are doing great, except that my anubias is just exploding with black algae. I have to frequently take a toothbrush to the rhizomes and trim back the roots as they get covered. My several otos and amano shrimp can't keep up. Have cut back on light to only 6 hours per day, water changes every 1 to 2 weeks. Periodically use Easy Carbon, but it is hard on my anacharis. Am careful about not overfeeding fish...once per day. Any suggestions for dealing with the algae on my anubias?

My Anubis, the coin shaped ones are located at the top of my tank attached to driftwood but appear to be yellowing, compared to my regular big leaded Anubis that are attached to rock. Any ideas as to why they may be yellowing? The rhizome is clean. I assumed it because the light might be too bright.

I hope you can helpppppppp me. I'm new to aquarium plants as in only about 1.5 months. I bought a few types of plants from Petco. I bought crested Java fern, Anubias Bateri. Someone gave me some moss type ball, and I also bought some hornwart the other day. The Java fern and anubias is getting brown streaks. I treat them with Flourish K, Fe, Excel. I did a 50% water change yesterday and added those treatments again. I tested my pH tonight and found it was 6-6.5. I have a bare bottom tank. If I need to increase the pH I can add some bags of substrate to bring it up. It's a 20 gallon but I'd love to set up both my 75 gallons but learning with this 20. What should I do?
