For me it mostly came by itself. I never cared much about brands (more like the opposite), I never cared much about different clothing pieces so I ended up distilling my clothes to black and white, never cared much about shoes.. The phones and random shit was more of a "I've bought all of this and now it's all garbage" that got me to toss shit out of my life and then realise that unless I stop buying shit I will never stop tossing it out. Then I slowly did more "activity" stuff with my money instead of buying stuff that does nothing for me (IE: Travel with friends, festivals, investing in useful gear for my business) and then whenever I irrationally fall into the "I want this" mindset even if I don't need or care much about it, I'll always have something I'd rather spend that money on.

Aaah. Books. Libraries. Hard for me to give up buying books, even though I hardly ever visit a book shop these days. Charity shops here have second hand books, and I've stopped browsing those shelves, but still... Books are often the best Gift as well : I bought my friend's 16 year old daughter a used book from my local charity shop - " What every girl should know" which listed everything you need to know when you get your own place and start to be grown up, and covered simple meals, housework routine, shopping, laundry, cocktails, plumbing etc - and apparently she had it beside her bed and read it every night, and even started doing her own laundry and a share of the housework. Result! There is something about the Experience of holding, reading and using an 'Analog' book that nothing can replace. In addition, having worked in Libraries for nearly 10 years in my youth, and as a life long learner, and Library user, you can't replace these either. I am a great user of digital books, too, but love paper, print and the sensual pleasures of a new, or even second hand book. I also resent the fact that digital books don't necessary survive a software update! Infuriating! and I see that as part of the Great Consumerist Conspiracy!

It's always worthwhile to visit the library and have a look through the books they sell off from time to time. I've purchased quite a few that way. And I still buy from Worldofbooks.co.uk for secondhand bargains or titles I've written down that I've wanted. And regarding your comment saying that ebooks don't survive a software upgrade - That will definitely make me NOT BUY AN EBOOK OR EBOOK READER.

I started offloading all my sneakers last year as I started KonMari method and eventually going even further with minimalism. As someone who grew up in hip-hop culture (90's Bronx, NY), I'd always wanted hype sneakers even though my Chinese parents would never consider buying anything costing more than 50USD. When I finally got a six-fig job, I started collecting but quickly came to realize it was a curse. Not only was I losing closet space, but I was also obsessed with staying on top of drops and having anxiety every Saturday morning trying to cop. I hit 50 pairs before my KnMari/minimalism journey. It's now down to 8 (mostly classic AJ1's) and I think I'm good here although I could take the plunge and ditch them all.

Interesting. It is important to support museums, as an art lover, if I visit a museum I always try to buy something from their gift shop, if not for me, then as a gift for someone I love. This source of revenue influx is important so that the museums can continue to afford having low ticket prices or free entrances for students to their exhibits. Otherwise art becomes available only the wealthy. Support your museums people!

I don’t buy Warranties. Storage containers, sorting tools or organisational products, trendy home deco stuff, fast fashion, purses that aren’t black, knicknaks I’ll have to clean. Food at restaurants. I’ll keep two of things if I have two of them. Cookware, camping gear, etc. that’s only used 1-2x/year, =kept. Keep receipts & user manuals. I buy in bulk to save $, even if I have clear space. Need to work on my love of accumulating hair products!
