@@martyburgess341 Honestly whenever I approach these movies I'm not thinking too deeply about the specifics of what film studio they're coming from or whether they've been produced by Marvel Studios or not. If it's based off of and adapting a Marvel Comics property, then it's Marvel, even if it's a filmmaker's own interpertative adaptation of that property. So I kind of have to agree with Deadpool when he told Fred Savage in the PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 that he's "still Marvel". Besides there's always going to be some older portrayals of these Marvel properties that some fans might still like more over the ones Marvel Studios gives us, and the Fantastic Four could end up being one of them for what little we know so far about their upcoming MCU debut.

I recall that during the pre-show talk the director stated that this was a family super hero movie, as the FF are known as the 'First Family' of superheroes. Reed was a bit of a lightweight, IMHO, but everyone else was PERFECT. I particularly liked the flamboyant show-off Johnny, and the brooding Thing. That new relationship with Alicia was right out of the original stories, unlikely or inappropriate as it may seem. Dr. Doom was deliciously evil, with the realization growing slowly, which was delicious. I was so glad they even made a sequel with my very favorite Marvel character, the Silver Surfer! The Human Torch wasn't used in the New FF cartoon because there were copyright issues due to him sharing the same name with the original Human Torch, an android and not created by Stan & Jack but Timely writer Carl Burgos who also created Victor Timely from the Loki series, Victor was one of the creators of the original Human Torch in Timely Comics. It was the same kind of copyright issues that forced DC to stop referring to Shazam as Captain Marvel. Human Torch was supposed to be the fire powered character in Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends but again, same copyright issues, so they created Firestar, basically a female version of the Human Torch. Firestar eventually made it into the comics as an Avenger rather than an X-Man.

If you read a lot of the comics, the humour is reflected, as well as the characters such as Alicia Masters being actually blind. The biggest problem was in how Dr Doom was realized. He was never exposed to the same cosmic rays, he actually built himself a suit rivalling Iron Man. He also had learned sorcery from his mother. He was an intellectual rival to both Reed Richards and Tony Stark, along with being the ruler of a highly advanced nation in eastern Europe. This is why Doom became one of Marvel’s greatest supervillains across many more titles than just FF. I think how all of this magnitude was just ignored in order to neatly tie up the plot was a major reason fans were upset.

I always liked this movie and couldn't understand why people took such a dislike to it just because it wasn't darker. It's more fun than some of the superhero moves since, has humour, Michael Chiklis is a terrific Ben Grimm, Chris Evans is fun to watch, the effects still hold up for the most part and it's really the opposite to the more po faced X men films. Interestingly I always thought George Clooney looks quite a bit like the comic books Mr Fantastic so no great shock to see his name linked with the role. It's an underrated film in many ways and you felt you got entertained when you saw it.

What this movie got right was casting and character dynamics. Most of its formula was really good

i prefer this version to the newer one.. and although it was only a 2 star movie back when it released, compared to most of the superhero movies in the last 10 years id class it as a 4 star movie now

As a reader of the original ff comics this movie got the Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm dynamic spot on and that was enough for me to love this movie , nuff said….
