I drove a an ‘85 359 in trucking school, and that was only a few months ago - 855 Cummins with 8-speed. It was a lot of fun to hustle around the cone course. And the transmission was so worn in, it shifted like melted butter. An instructor joked that was like an old hooker, because it just drops right in.

My dad had a 1961 351 needle nose pete. That was was before the 359 and that was Peterbilts flagship. And them old trucks were everything but light weight! Those twin stick transmissions were no joke and the 3408 cat was just too much. A lot of people swapped out those engines because they were just way too heavy! And those hoods. Man, some were a back breaker to open because they were so heavy. In fact, that's why they come out with the spring and even air assist hood raising system!

Back in the 1980’s we ran I-40 between Okie City & Barstow with a Red in color 359 pulling a Portable Parking Lot. Used to see a lot of really nice 359’s with all types of wagons behind them. There was one company called Days Express, they had 359’s with Cummins KT’s, don’t remember if they were 450’s or 600’s, but they were always looking good. A lot of O/O’s as well & those Hands always took pride in their 359’s for sure. I was fortunate to be out there in a 359 during that time as it was a great time on the road for the most part & met a lot of characters on the road & was able to see a lot of neat areas as well, come on!

If you look at 2:22 you'll see that the first truck with the 63 inch sleeper had suicide sleeper doors. It was never intended to be put into production this way but as I recall it was simply done as a promotional spoof by the company. The for fathers of Peterbilt was a company called Fageol, before purchased by T.A. Peterman. If you look at a 1937 Fageol you can see how the Fageol styling influences Peterbilt to this very day. Great video, LOVE the 359!

Being a Brit we never really had the big conventionals over here but by far my favourite was the Kenworth W900, after seeing Smokey And The Bandit when I was 13. My question is, although they look fairly similar is there a big difference between the KW and the 359? The bare cab looks the same and the sleepers look the same. Any info would be much appreciated. Many thanks, Dave.

My 1978 Pete came with the 3408 and a 6x5 spicer. We added straight chrome pipes with turnouts. The truck had a 100mph speedometer and was an on/op special. In 1984 it would still hide a 100mph number and it was one of those 100mph plus type trucks.
@Slim_Slid
@Slim_Slid 3 жыл бұрын
@@taunuslunatic404 The truck from Duel is a Peterbilt 281,not even related to the 357-359 series,although they still were manufactured at the same time when the later variants were released.The 357/359 came out approximately 1967 or earlier,but the 281/351 was still built until 1974 ever since it came out in 1954.The 281/351 were the last trucks from Peterbilt that had needle nose hoods,and the only difference between the two versions was that the 351 had Tandem axles while the 281 never did.

They also used a 1984 359 in Joyride Dead Ahead,it could be the same truck from Joyride that was used.But then in Joyride Roadkill,they used a 1976 359 which was completely different from the last two films,the sleeper unit was smaller,it had custom mud flaps,had vinyls on the front hood,and obviously that bullbar with single headlights only.

Well 359 peet the door latches are shit & the mirrors mounted on the door so when your slamming the door trying to make it close it changes the mirror adjustment & eventually cracks the door where the mirror is mounted . I ave seen just as many KT Cummings engines in 359 peets as V8 cats The trouble was the frame couldn't handle the torque & would crack around the motor mounts ,its hard to find a early early 359 peet with out a broken frame anyway I personally broke 3 in half my self , Then i solved my problem i bought a Kenworth

@StonedPony1
@StonedPony1 4 жыл бұрын
@@airmech3319 What do you want to know? Not going to get in detail, but just and overlook. I had one 1978 Pete exhd and it was good, had power and pull. (Side note if you really set one up hot) You have to change the fuel lines from the tanks to the engine about every two to three years as they would pull the lining loose on the inside and half-ass stop the fuel flow. Acted like it was sucking air, but it was the fuel lining coming loose on the inside of the line. The other place that they and all cat engines had a problem with was the hand pump to pump fuel as they would suck air when the seal went bad and it was a bitch to find the first time around if you didn't know about it. Now the biggest problem was the offset of the pistons as they were at about 60 degrees set (Where a Mack V8 or KTA engine was more like 90 degrees) and if you put your foot in it you could snap a crank. ( A crank for one of these is not cheap, around 5,000 up)They leaked oil, but not like a Detroit. Setting the engine up was different as you had to set the timing back by the rear of the engine and not like you would set up a 3406 A or B model of just turning the fuel/air to it. Fuel mileage-wise was about 4-6 mpg, depending on how you drove it loaded and all that. They like all old Cat engines have a sweet spot and if you learn it you will do good on mpg and engine life. Have seen those engines with over a million miles on them by guys who knew how to drive one. These engines are a one-man engine and not let everyone anyone drive type engine. I hope that helps.
