Today, we went to walmart, I was watching the clothing and my husband asked me if I wanted something bc today is my birthday and I answered: no thank you, I already have a lot. I want to create a emergency fund in a one low income (his) and being with my babies at home. I cannot aford to spend money in cute seasonal clothes that later gonna declutter and regret spending the money in "trash". Thank God we have house, food and a bit more than enough clothing

Former fashionista here….when I discovered a passion for gardening, my priorities shifted. I became more interested in soil than shoes. It truly is about priorities and what I value. I’m much happier discovering things that add meaning and value. It’s also great to be off the “next thing” fashion hook. Really, no one cares - at least those who matter.

I really appreciate this, Joshua. I'd also like to point out that many of the examples of minimalist wardrobes lead you to believe that it's all about black t-shirts and jeans. But you can have a minimalist wardrobe that is full of high-quality AND stylish clothing. I've worked in Denmark several times and have been struck by how much personal style and elegance can be achieved with a tiny closet and a few well-chosen pieces. Minimalism does not have to be boring.

I did simplify my wardrobe, then got bored and wanted to change things up. I don’t put together outfits for trends or to please anyone; I do it because its fun and I enjoy it! I only realized that after discarding 80% of my wardrobe. Though I’m not doing a capsule wardrobe, I am still mindful of each piece I bring in. I also learned to sew so I can mend and modify thrifted garmets and stay away from fast fashion even while switching things up.

Great message! Thanks Josh! I've always wondered why people in tech kept their wardrobes simple (Mark Zuckerburg, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Sundar Pichai) . Now I understand. It not only clutters your closet, but also your mind. It's nice to have a simple, high quality, wardrobe to choose from; however, it does require a shift of mindset. You have to stop caring about what kind of person people see you as, and start caring about the kind of person you really are. It's a lifelong journey, and I'm grateful I have this amazing community to share that journey with!

I just feel like the most beautiful and elegant people I run across are often really keeping it very simple. I think it’s a lot like decluttering my house was. Less stuff “piled on” led to being able to let the beauty shine more and to be able to see it better. More or less rather than noticing something shiny or sparkly or gaudy ON someone, you notice THEM more rather than some “piece” or trinket they have on. And well, def character and who they really are matters far beyond any of that also. I guess it’s working tho. Lol. I got rid of a lot and now I have people telling me things like “You always look so cute/put together.” I prob did look put together before but now the diff is that it is just so much easier and faster for me. Ironically I really don’t care (what they think of my style lol) but it’s nice to have a little icing on the cake every once in awhile. For me tho it’s often the classic white tee rather than black. 😅😅

As a retiree and caretaker of my husband with Parkinson's I have a very casual, simple life and wardrobe. I kept wanting dressier items, then they would just hang in the closet. I've pared it down and finally feel very content and grateful for what I have and don't plan on getting/needing anything new for at least a year. I take care with laundering and mend my clothing, as needed.

I started watching videos years ago to down size my life and to live more calm. I had to pack away many clothes because spouse kept telling me how much money was paid for them. Back in the spring I realized I have a great sensitivity to Polyester. Approximately 200 pieces of clothing was donated to various neighbors and charities. Then the cost of replacing some of them with 100% cotton hit. I now have approximately 50 pieces total. No longer separate summer items and winter items. As one person said - I have enough!

Love when you said to consider what you currently have with clothes as a blessing, you have less desire to add. Only rid of too small or too big and wear the older stuff as around the house clothes. Buying less often only as needed. Great common sense video. Thanks for the encouragement!

My clothes are second-hand or third hand. Rummage sales, thrift shops, garage sales, neighbors, and my kids are all good sources for clothing and accessories. I bought one pair of shoes this year, and one purse. Those were the only brand new items I bought. When my kids were young, they wore hand me downs, so did my grandkids when they were young. Shopping shouldn't be a hobby. Tina, Al's wife

Sustainability was the main reason for me to invest in a color and bodytype analysis. Knowing what looks best on you keeps you from buying clothes you won’t wear. And I need way less and still can make so many different combinations. Everything goes together! ❤ No need to spend much time on getting dressed anymore.

I would argue that one doesn't really need to chose ethically made and environmentally friendly clothes to made capsule wardrobe. It will be great if more people made this choice, but it doesn't help, it actually makes things harder. It is absolutely worth it imo, but if it wasn't the case fast fashion wouldn't even exist. And what people need to create capsule wardrobes is not just inspiration, but also technical education on how to... and this is where many of us struggle. Choosing the right color scheme (the one that doesn't make you look sick or feel bored to tears, different for different people). Choosing style (most professionals recommend to stick to a combo of two and adjust the mix according to situation, e. g. if your mix is sporty + elegant, your gym clothes will be like 5% elegant (mostly from colors used and attention to details), casual might be like 30% and formal wear should go up to 95% (something in scye cut maybe) to create cohesiveness and flexibility (so you can mix formal skirt and gym tank top and look fab instead of odd). There are more technical stuff about proportions and how to apply that color scheme. Otherwise people get inspired, create a capsule that doesn't really work for them and off to thrift store it goes.

This right here is the type of advice most of us need. I think his WHY explanation is spot on and motivating. However most people need to know how to execute it. I antisocial just started changing my style. I went to a great local boutique and I asked their buyer/ designer if they could give me a style recommendation. She recommended combining 2 styles and picked a good color palate for me. Never in a million years would I have picked TAN as a base color. I was thinking more orange or green. Nope, tan. Specifically it's a muted chalky tan that has a grayish tone. (We started with a soft colonial blue/gray but it didn't go well with the accessory colors that i like) Then picked items to make it pop. Big scarves, little scarves, belts, broaches, etc. I started fresh, all of my current clothes that fit the style went into the guest room closet. One large drawer for the accessory pieces. Then slowly added to the closet with base clothes that could take me from lunch with friends to city council meetings to fancy dinners. I utilize Rent The Runway for formal events and now don't have a dozen ball gowns jamming my closet full! After about a 6 month transition, I stopped using anything in my actual closet and only the curated wardrobe in the guest room. I invited girlfriends over to purge my bedroom closet. Told them EVERYTHING will go or get donated to charity. I love seeing my friends occasionally wearing some of my previous favorites. Now the guest closet items have moved to my bedroom closet. I had so much space that I put a dresser in the closet for all of the accessories. I love my scarves whether tied around my neck, in my hair, draped over the shoulder or waist. It's become my signature look and I love it. Okay I do have one fabulous red dress 💃 just for that occasional statement but I dress that up with scarves and wraps too. Creating a look and collection changed my life. Less mental stress of what to wear. Less trying to stay on trend. Less cheap seasonal or thrift store finds clogging up my closet. My recommendation to minimalizing your world, start with one room (bathroom is an easy start for most) and conquer that. Or pick an item like linens/bedding and start there. You don't need 6 different sets of bedsheets! Two is plenty (one is probably okay because you know we all wash them and put them straight back onto the bed. lol). Shoes and purses, cut your current amount in half and then cut it again. You'll feel fanatic accomplishing the low hanging fruit. Then move on to more. Good luck.

I love color! So I found a couple of styles I liked for tops and purchased a number of different colors in the various styles. I have long sleeve, short sleeve and tanks tops. I have a few pairs of jeans, dress pants and capris along with 3 dresses. All fit nicely in my closet. Not really minimal but I no longer have a ton of clothes stuffed in my closet and dresser. 2024 will be a no-spend on clothes…unless I lose 50lbs. 😁

I do try to buy second hand clothing & sell or donate what I no longer like or wear or fits. But you need to take care of clothing like anything else you invest in. Quality machine that removes j by bobbles or piling from clothes is helpful. Learn how to sew on buttons etc. Learn about the item care instructions for washing etc. These will make you favourite items last longer.

My father used to tell me if you do not have the money to buy clothing that is expensive buy something that you know you will wear over and over even if it's second hand but the main thing is that are clean and do not offend people by your choice of clothing.. You should dress in a modest manner. Yes, styles and trends change all the time. Think of the money you can save by not being a victim of fad and fashion

I live in Maine and I have a minimal wardrobe. I have one winter coat, hat and mittens and one lighter weight jacket for spring and fall, which also repels rain. I have two pairs of neutral long pants and two pairs of neutral shorts and 5 tank tops / short-sleeve shirts, 2 long-sleeve shirts and 2 sweaters. They all mix and match and layer. In addition, one dress for any weddings or funerals I need to attend. I'm retired, so I don't need any business clothing. I'm obviously not a fashionista, but it works well for me.
