Today's KZfaq video is 10 Tips for show day! Preparation is your KEY to a successful competition!
If you are planning on competing this season, be sure to SIGN UP FOR MY FREE MINI COURSE ON SHOW PREP
Plan Extra Time - to stay relaxed and focused, it is good to have a little extra time rather than not enough! There are a lot of little things that you need to remember on show day- fly spray, your number, white gloves, the list goes on… so give yourself a little extra time so that you can stay relaxed!
Hand walk in the morning - With ALL of my horses I like to get them out for a walk around the show grounds and if possible around the show arena the morning of the competition. This gives my horse another chance to see everything before competition time. Be sure it is focused and controlled hand walking - I practice halts and getting my horse to drop their head when I am walking them.
Visualize your test - find a quiet place and visualize your test from start to finish without interruption. Be sure that you envision every corner, every short side and exactly how you want the test to feel. When you visualize, it should take about the same amount of time as it does to actually ride your test.
“Hope for the best, prepare for the worst” - Of course you want to visualize the perfect ride, but the reality is that things often go wrong in the ring - maybe your horse spooks ad the judges booth or maybe you pick up the wrong lead in the canter. It is important to have a “plan b” for if things go wrong to know how you will handle these situations.
Set realistic expectations - most of us Dressage riders are very “type A” and tend to set unrealistic expectations. Showing takes practice - your first time out is NOT going to be perfect so don’t expect it to be!
Stick to your routine - establish a warm up that you follow daily at home and stick to it at the show. The warm up should always focus on the basics - rhythm, suppleness, and connection!
Give your horse confidence - remember to pet your horse and give them confidence at the show! If you are nervous, your horse feels it and will start to loose their confidence.
Take all of your horses boots off! Remember to get all of your horses boot off before entering the show ring - including bell boots! I got eliminated once from my Grand Prix test for having bell boots on! It was quite embarrassing!
Don’t change how you ride when you go in the ring - be sure to ride the same in the competition ring as you do in the warp up. Many riders suffer from frozen rider syndrome in the show ring - they freeze up and forget to ride!!
Breathe smile and have fun! At the end of the day, remember to be proud of your horse and how far you have come!!!
I hope these tips are helpful!
Good Luck this Show Season!

What a nice review for show preparation! And yes, I did leave your bell boots on for a Grand Prix test! You were so gracious and said, Mom, Don't worry! It wasn't the best test! I will always groom for you.

Smile - and hum a happy tune (quietly) - especially if you're feeling tense. Both me and my horse shed our stress by thinking happy thoughts. I even try to practice smiling instead of wincing when I do something wrong. Better to have a sense of humor and move on than get stuck in the last movement with regret or worse, anger.

I also recommend to my students to either get there early or make arrangements the day before to go in and walk the arena. Just like a jumper walks the course and figures out course and striding, this also helps in the dressage test. Even though you've ridden the same test over and over at home and at other venues, every place is a bit different. If you can walk with your horse, you can gauge their response to the environment (scary bushes at E, etc) but if you need landmarks to help you with accuracy, you can also use your walk in conjunction with your visualization exercise to help you prep your ride strategy by picking out unique landmarks in that particular arena.

"Frozen rider syndrome"; so happy that we have a name now 😅. After reading and looking at your video it feels it's really time to get over it, lower the expectations and "breathe smile and have fun" instead (not only afterwards 😉). Thanks again for all the tips; it really motivates !!! 😘

I love your videos Amelia. You are real, you love what you do, you explain things like a humble person even though you are amazing. I think it's your tone and feel in talking to people that is really something special.

Hi Amelia, I loved it when you said 'breath smile and have fun. Years ago I decided to smile all through my test. It was so relaxed and my horse did his best. The judges may have wondered what was so funny. But they Ave me a club bronze medal. Wonderful advice.

Thanks for your as -always excellent tips. I've been showing for years but still forget to breathe, which affects so many things. Having not competed in over a year I need these great reminders. Having fun is so important- why else would we do it? Just in time for our 1st show of the season :-).

Does every venue allow you to walk inside the dressage arena before or after the show begins and ends?

No. But you sometimes can walk around the outside of the dressage arena.
