For me, the most important of the tips was to shave at night. Not only does it give time for the skin to recover from any nicks or razor burn, but I then have more time to enjoy the shave and am not as rushed.

Team cold water! I'll add another completely free tip. Take the blade out and rinse it thoroughly if you use a pre-shave. It doesn't always rinse off perfectly under the cap, and you really don't want a mixture of pre-shave, stubble, skin cells, and whatever else sitting in a damp razor head for 2 days only to rub it across a potentially infected area of skin.
@BuffaloNickel9
@BuffaloNickel9 Жыл бұрын
Yes good tip, but better than that you should do this wether use pre-shave or not. You Should also never store your razor blade in the razor and I'll give you an even better tip to reduce bacteria use a brand new blade every single shave. you're taking off a layer of skin on your face you don't want to drag a blade with bacteria over a potentially infected area. Even better your blade won't have microscopic Burrs on it from being previously used that will tug and pull your hair whether you feel it or not. One shave is all it takes of a man's whiskers as hard as copper wire to create Burrs or microscopic chips on a DE razor blade which affects your quality of shave especially on potentially sensitive skin and razor burn whether you feel the tug or not...

Secret #11: realizing just how light a 'light touch' really is... Oddly this occurred while using a very light aluminum handled tech (razors with more positive blade exposure aided me also). Rather than bearing down harder, as some gents report, I seemed to develop a lighter hand as opposed to the ham-handedness they warned against... Magic! It still represents my best shaves to date! Allowing the blade to just skim the surface of my face with little to no pressure whatsoever transformed my routine. And things got markedly better with ever razor following that wonderful day!

Tip #11 for me has been always make sure your blade is sharp. Which means for me 1 to 2 shaves and then bin it. DE blades are cheap and there is no real fiscal point to trying to make your blade last as long as possible when they are pennies on the dollar cheap. So do yourself a favor and use it a few times and then get rid of it just like your ingrown hairs.
@BuffaloNickel9

One of the only intelligent non frugal individuals out there who understands *your double edge razor blade needs to be as sharp as possible for every use which means A new double edge razor blade for each shave!* If your blade is not sharp, and it's been used more than once, it's likely going to tug and pull *whether you feel it or not.* These blades are not made of supersteel like m390 S90v, even s30v or cpm154! they are made of cheap stainless & the edge is so thin you can hardly see it with a microscope. Speaking of microscope try looking at your DE blade under a quality microscope and seeing the burrs from just one use! Men's facial hair can be as thick as copper wire on such a thin, delicate DE Edge. What is wrong with these guys who in their shave the day will list their blade on shave 4,5, 8, 10 etc... it's just embarrassingly cheap/ frugal, and most importantly you're using a dull blade at the cost of what? saving 2 pennies? Reusing a blade that has had time to gather bacteria unless you sanitized it with alcohol and now it's got microscopic Burrs on it that are pulling your Whiskers whether you feel it or not? Risking a relaxing, clean, *SANITARY* , smooth shave All for a few cents that wouldn't add up to more than a cup of coffee or 2 per year. I'll never understand why anyone could be that cheap and risk their hygiene like that? I wouldn't reuse blades if it saved me $40 bucks per year. but it won't save you a fraction of that! What if your doctor decided to reuse shot needles to save 2 cents. You're shaving off a layer of skin every time you shave- technically a light wound. you need the most sanitary conditions possible. there's going to be bacteria associated with that, that lives and breeds on your razor blade.. and even if there wasn't, why risk a good sharp, smooth shave for chump change? Chump Change! Complete Idiocracy. New Perma- Sharp or Gillette Platinum Blade every shave for Me. And I'll continue to roll my eyes every time I see some goon list their Astra blade on its fifth shave and cringe because I know it's tugging their hairs, all for the upside of not even being able to afford an appetizer at dinner per year with the pennies saved. There's just no good argument in favor of it. It's quite embarrassing for those people

Rigid blade is great advice. Here's my tip #11: If you are having issues with your DE razor, it could be the way the razor is made. I have a Parker three piece that I stopped using because of blade chatter. It just leaves too much blade edge hanging out in space. Most of the newer machined DE razors clamp the blade way more effectively than the mass produced cast razors. Many vintage Gillette razors clamp the blade well too. I'm throwing in a tip #12 too. Use wetter lather. It needs to flow through the razor easily. If the lather is too thick and rich the razor can float like a hydroplaning car, making the shave less efficient and leaving you needing to use more pressure or more passes.

Great information. You’ve been my go to for information since I’ve been wet shaving. Cold water was the best information you have us a couple months ago. #11 don’t try to use a blade until it dies. Once it starts tugging it’s too late. They don’t cost much. Just let them go to recycling. #12 shorter strokes and rinse the razor often

If the razor feels like it's tugging, try a different blade (dull, bad edge geometry for your facial hair & skin) or if possible razor. Don't keep using the current ones. Powering through the shave will likely cause serious irritation.

Maybe this three things that helped me lately with my thick, stiff hair (besides technique), could help others too. At least an half hour before shaving I massage some sort of oil (baby oil, shaving oil...) in my beard. This will soften the hair by a lot. Secondly I use soaps that are more alkaline sometimes, like the Arko. They soften the hair better and quicker. And lastly I noticed that I have a better protection (no red spots) if I don't rinse in between passes (if multiple). Just dip the brush in the water swirl a couple of times and paint. I have a lot better shaves at the moment, even more gentle then with a cartridge. 🤓👍🏻

Rinsing the razor often with cold water seems to help during the shave, ingrown hairs are rare for me thankfully. Mapping the growth is also an important step as I do a three pass shave. Everything you mention is right on, anything to help the shave. Give it a go, nothing to lose. Thanks Matt. 👍👍

Morning Matt. Great info for the ingrown hair problem. I have a suggestion for those shavers that may not own a SE razor but want a stiffer blade. Since blades are cheap they can double stack blades. I often do this and can notice there is no blade chatter. I wish I had all of this help when I started shaving back in the day. Thanks again and enjoy your day.

My best outcome is every 36-48+ hours in between shaves. I like the Proraso preshave and the Proraso aftershave balm. Thanks for my revamp too, nice job! 👍

Shaving with cartridges gave me the worst irritation and ingrown hairs ever. Switching to wet shaving helped drastically, but still got some in certain spots (the pesky equator line around my Adam’s apple) and what really helped was starting to lather on my neck/face. Made a huge final difference, I always thought using a bowl would help my shaving brushes last longer from less friction but honestly the more I thought about it back in the day I believe that’s how men lathered.. directly on their face. So if shaving brushes wear out faster on your face than using them in a bowl then manufacturers really need to be looking into that but I highly doubt it makes a difference in how long it lasts. Pre-shave cream also helps a lot

#11 try a more aggressive razor. It will make you work more gently and pay more attention to your technique. Also since it’s more aggressive you’ll be less likely to keep going over the same area.

#11 Knowing when to stop This was something that took me a while to learn, but once I started to really understand when its time to stop, it changed the way my skin looks after a shave. I think we all chase that BBS in a way, especially when you just start to get the hang of DE shaving. But exactly there lies a trap imo; over shaving, continuing when it already feels off (when going ATG for instance), or also shaving the day after where you should give it some more time to rest and heal. If you know when it’s time to stop you can really get ahead of irritation and ingrown hairs!

Matt, I'm late to the party on this one. All great suggestions. If I had #11, it would be to skip one shave cycle, to let stubble grow out, so you can try to stand it up better and search for ingrown hairs. I'm typically a daily shaver, so skipping a day (or two) sometimes helps to let the skin heal (as you mentioned), and I can find/dig them out. I usually take a straight pin and catch the tip in the hair loop and lift it away from the skin (free end pops right out of the skin). I completely agree with all of your suggestions and use some of them: 99% face latherer (and scrub it in good), preshave, shave at night (very relaxing before bed and face heals overnight), moisturize/AS balms, and probably others (tried cold water a couple of times when I had ingrowns). Thanks for the tips!

Good point of not chasing a BBS everywhere since it increases the likelihood of razor burn and nicks. I can achieve a BBS on my face but if I pursue it for my neck, it’s a train wreck. Shaving at night is also really helpful because your skin settles down over night.

Great one! Amazing tips! My nr. 11 I learned from Doug from PAA. Don't rush for touch ups. Wait 30min for the water on your bristles (remember prep???) to dry out. And when they do, the hair retracts... and voila: you possibly got a BBS without even trying.

Some great tips in this video, my shave routine uses every tip Matt mentioned. My #11 is extending the "get stiff" tip from Matt. If you want to use the "get stiff" with a DE blade buy yourself a Henson Mild AL13 or Ti22. The Henson razor makes the DE blade more rigid than any other razor I own. The blade clamping is exceptional with very little blade reveal. You also can't get the shave angle wrong and make mistakes! If you get the shave angle wrong with the Henson, it simply doesn't cut anything. This razor won't give you a BBS in one or two passes, but it is perfect for letting your skin heal. I can also use the Henson to get a respectable DFS or passing shave right before I go out if needed. For a one pass near BBS and smooth shave buy yourself a Rex Konsul, wow !

Great Video, good you mention some valuable information for ingrown hair suffers. One thing I do is look for red spots after the shave is done and just before I apply my aftershave is take a worn out tooth brush and gently stroke the brush in a few different directions to lift the possible ingrown hair. If it is a blemish it will not hurt anything if gently brushed, but a ingrown hair inward direction is possibly altered by the brush strokes and will be sniped the next shave. Then I apply my aftershave & balm for final part of my shave. I have not had issues with ingrown hairs for years by taking 15-30 seconds to check face for any red spots and I do a 2 pass shave (WTG + ATG + pick ups) . It works is all I can say from my own experiences! Avoid multi bladed cartridge razors if a person is prone to ingrown hairs also.

11: IF you are using a high quality lather you spent serious dough on (or not-Stirling is cheap and high quality), then give your freshly shaven face a nice GENTLE scrub with your brush before you rinse. Your shaving lather, if it’s a good one, is good for your skin and your brush applies it in the best way, working your skin and hairs into a healthy and clean state before final rinse. If I’m using a good soap like B+M Omnibus or A&E, what have you, not only does the soap wash away any remaining dirt and irritants, but the many skin care ingredients in these lathers make them great for washing post shave. I’ve adopted many of Matt’s techniques in my shaving routine so I’m not sure if it’s the post-shave brush scrub that has reduced my ingrowns. But I do have fewer since adding this and other steps. 12: Moisturize but don’t over-moisturize. Generally the less runny the balm is, the less you need. Sometimes my whole post shave is working the tiniest bit of Proraso white preshave into my wet skin after rinse. The tiniest bit does the job. Too much and I feel like I need to re-rinse. Same with Stirling balms. A dollop the size of a couple BB’s is plenty for me. Does the job as well as a pea-size dollop, maybe better. I love using a ton of product in my lather and getting positively decadent with the splash if I use it. But my face seems to prefer my balms in smaller amounts.

Matt, unbelievable!! You compiled a common sense list of things most shavers don’t think about! But as they say common sense is rarely common. But you DO think about these things. Thank you for yet another wonderful video! Ok number 11. Here goes. To be honest I learned this from Geofatboy who received the tip from one of his video watchers. Everything hot (or warm) except wetting the razor: cold! I had never seen that recommended anywhere in the past 13 months I have researched wet shaving! So at first I thought hmmmm I’ll try it. The result is pretty crazy. I believe it works because your face beard and shaving cream are all warm/hot, then the cold blade causes the skin to contract leaving the hair further exposed at the base. And it makes for a refreshing nick free razor burn free shave!!!! That’s number 11! Thank you for all you do. Personally you are very inspiring to me. And to us all. Patrick.

This is great content. Thank you for sharing this. I've been on a downward spiral with ingrown hairs on my neck and I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. It turns out "a lot of different things" was the answer: shaving too frequently, too many passes, hot water, not moisturizing. Hoping that single passes, cool water shaving, and an evening skin care routine with applying shaving cream with and lathering it on my face with a brush, washing it off, applying glycolic acid toner, and then a beta glucan moisturizer. Okay it's Sephora stuff, that's where I am with this now as my daughters are skincare geniuses and its what they know😅.

If I do use a twin blade cartridge (like when traveling with only carry-on) I like the Gillette Skin Guard as the two blades are spaced so as not to have the hysteresis effect that tends to cut beard below the skin. On the short Parker Fusion-compatible metal knurled handle this makes a near perfect travel razor for sensitive skin and/or curly beards prone to in-grown hairs. I have a tiny reservation about the micro-plastic waste. Another alternative is an injector razor - I use an NOS Schick type L I got for $20 sealed in a can - it was a promo in the late 70’s/early 80’s. My favorite injector blade is the Supply Black Label from Japan or the Japanese Schick blades (the ones from Japan are expensive to ship and take months to get to USA though). If you load one injector blade into the razor it’ll clear TSA no problem - I’ve done it MANY times. One loaded injector blade will last at least 10 shaves or 2-3 weeks even if working 5 days/week.

I find that Thayers witch hazel splashed on after the final pass and clean-up raises those darn spots where you might have missed and that gives me my perfect shave (I also pre-shave with a splash of the witch hazel too) I find it makes bristles stand up more.

Brush burn is real. I have a couple soft synthetics that are gentler on my face than a badger or boar. My skin gets irritated if you look at it cross-eyed. Many scents cause burning for me too, along with other ingredients. Trial and error led me to my favorite products after many irritating fails. Even the softest brush can give me brush irritation and the shave goes downhill from there. But soft synthetics can give me a great cleansing, whisker prepping face lather as long as I’m gentle with the brush on my skin. Good luck.

I've found that even while using alcohol based products like Apla Windsor pre-shave and Barbus after shave you can actually have a nice, comfortable shave with no ingrown hairs. In my case after whole routine and after using Barbus Aftershave you can use a face butter. In my case it was a mix of oils and butters (shea butter, cannabis sativa oil, watermelon seed oil, raspberry oil, olive oil) along with additives like panthenol, allatoin, vitamin e, geranio, coumarin and few others additives. It was awesome. It has subtle scent which does not collide with aftershave. Unfortunately Proraso does not give me a good results. I love how it lathers, how it smells, how it feels on my face. Unfortunately it's no go for a daily routine. From time to time it's awesome.

I would also say that I shave my most sensitive area, which is my lower neck, with a shallow angle. If I shave with a steep angle, I’m more prone to ingrowns. That would be my #11.

All good points. Was on the cold water tempering train for a while, then back to hot water. Had a few rougher shaves and went back to cold water rinse on razor as i went- seemed to reduce nicks, weepers, irritation. But havent tried the straight cold water on face start to finish. Will alternate TOBS and Proraso sensitive skin lines with the non-sensitive products. Still want to try a slant razor to see how that feels…

My only consistent problem is getting minor irritation on my lower beck area when my flat-lying neck hairs start growing back in and irritate the surrounding skin (about 12-24 hours after a shave). It's just minor redness around a handful of hairs and it may not be all that noticeable to other people I do notice it and it will forever drive me crazy. I'm not sure i'll ever be able to completely rid myself of that problem but it's gotten better. I don't think my skin can take a shave every 24 hours. I only occasionally get true, nasty ingrown hairs and I feel that exfoliating 8-12 hours AFTER a shave can help prevent that. A salicylic acid face wash with a soft wash cloth can gently exfoliate the skin, removing dead skin that might prevent a hair from getting stuck. I've tried a number of the techniques Matt has recommended in this video. For a while i only used cold water but now I've switched to warm and I haven't noticed any difference. I tried a Single Edge 2.0 razor and it was a bad experience but i'll chalk that up to the learning curve of a different kind of razor. I've tried face lathering with a boar brush but I feel like that may have irritated my skin even before i put a blade to it. I'll have to give that another chance, perhaps starting with a softer brush.

Another great video Matt and again perfect timing. What’s been working for me when I get an ingrown hair is to let my beard grow out a few days and then cut it off. I’ve tried cold water shaving a couple times and haven’t been a fan but maybe it’s an acquired taste so I’ll try it again. Thank you

Nice vid. The map thing works for many, but I have 2 "swirls" in the base of the neck making it impossible to go with the grain. To shave this area, I use a Norelco one blade (not very close shave) but never get ingrown. Rest of face DE shave following more or less your steps.

Great information, thank you. Got back to wet shaving towards end of last year after starting out wet shaving in the 70's up through the 90's. My secret #11 would be go to a milder razor for a bid and/or going with a more smooth vs sharp blade. Thank you for all that you have done and are doing for the wet shaving community!! (Particularly love all the vintage Gillette razor information as those were the hand me downs I started out on!). Stan

Are there stiff double edge razors? Would a more aggressive blade work like a stiff razor? My tip #11 personally is having just as much of a post routine as a pre routine. Like using a block of alum, post shave soothing balm from nivea men, then having a good lotion after the other things have dried. All that helped with razor burn and some in grown hairs but not all the way😪😪

My Secret "Step #11" is simple. I stole it from Indian Street & Kiosk Barbers: after the shave but before the after shave application-a vigorous finger massage of the face. I don't know if it works from a scientific or practical standpoint but it FEELS REALLY GOOD!. ;-)

I have also watched those KZfaq shaving videos where they do 3 passes with the last one being against the grain. But I don't get it. I think against the grain is an aggressive action. I personally always do just one pass with the grain. The result is good enough. I don't see any need for taking more actions.

Agree with most of these. I’d just add one and challenge 1. The single most important thing is EXFOLIATION. A brush isn’t enough. Salicylic acid isn’t enough. 8-12 hours after a shave, use a physical exfoliating scrub. It will do wonders for you. If your skin can’t handle a physical exfoliation, go chemical. Trust me. The point id challenge is on the use of moisturizer/balms. I actually think a thick moisturizer can be detrimental to ingrown hairs, as it can clog pores and make it harder for the hairs to escape. Just my 2c
