For those of you with sensitive skin and want to save money on shaving. I highly recommend investing into a good DE safety razor. It can be daunting at first, but with a little bit of practice and figuring out what product works will make it all worth it. Blades are extremely cheap, especially compared to disposable, multi-blade razors. Some things you should look for are close-combed, mild ones. For instance, I’d recommend the King C Gillette DE safety razor or the Merkur 34C.

I’m a Hispanic lady and my legs are completely covered in thick black hair. Anytime I shave I get red, burning, and lots of ingrown hairs. I even try to wear cloths to prevent shaving because it hurts so much. I’m going to try some of these tips and hopefully this will help because I’ve given up for about 3 years now.

I have used conditioner as a shaving cream for years. I always use a very simple gentle conditioner with limited ingredients. I recommended it to a friend last year and he swears by it as well. Glad to hear a dermatologist talk about this! Thank you both for sharing your knowledge.

Electric hair liners are the best thing for me and a lot of black men. Razors cut too close causing folliculitis. I also brush my facial hair to keep it growing straight and not into the skin. The last best thing I do use a skin care routine for oil, diet, and cell turnover. I was missing that last step for over a decade until now.

So.. I can't recommend Dollar Shave Club's Executive razor enough (or w/e the 5 blade boy is named). I am a cis woman that grows the same density and thickness of facial hair as a man. Well, it WAS that bad, but I'm getting laser hair removal currently (which I 100% recommend to anyone struggling with unwanted hair). Anyway, I have been shaving my face, neck and stache area for years. That is the only razor that provides me with THE closest shave (undetectable hair). Gillette is good too, but it's more expensive. I'm also happy to learn that I taught myself the best recommended routine for shaving apparently based on what you guys said. I kind of had to though.. I get major, major, MAJORLY bad ingrown hairs on my neck and chin. So I gentle cleanse, massage my sensitive skin shaving cream or gel into my face, let it sit a little, shave with and against the grain for maximum closeness, exfoliate with a gentle chemical exfoliator and follow up after shower with niacinamide + my other skincare stuff. Been going well since I started following that routine. I also change my razor every few weeks considering how many areas I shave. If you want to leave the blade in the shower, at LEAST pat it on your towel gently and hang it on something. Never let it sit on the side of your tub or whatever. For any other women growing facial hair, I hope this helps you. I took me a long time to figure out what worked best for me, but we're finally there!

I found using a safety razor with titanium coated razors helped get rid of any skin irritation. I buy razors from feather they're really cheap and extremely sharp. Never cut my face with them when it's in my safety razor handle, but have learned to he very careful handling them when replacing it. I've cut my fingers just grabbing them. Used it to shave some body parts before and it works but you have to be careful not to cut the skin sometimes since it's always easy angels like your face is.

1st of all, don't use GEL, use FOAM. Foam works much better for standing your hair where gel often glue them to the skin. That means that with gel, you have to go over more times.

I have two questions. 1) I got rid of acne (not severe version) thanks to birth control. Is it likely that it will come back with full force if I stop using birth control or after pregnancy? 2) you and other dermatologist talk much about sun screen. I’ve used moisturizer with sun protection for many years. If I’m on vacation or if it’s summertime i use a special one for not getting sunburned. I wonder if, during the rest of the year, it’s enough to use moisturizer with sun screen once a day before using make up etc? It feels complicated to add more on during the day if I’m not actively stay in the sun. I live in Sweden and we don’t have many hours of sun most time of the year, but spring and summer are long with lots of daylight. I hope you understand my questions. Shower to steam the face. Splash cold water on face. Brush on shaving cream. Use safety razor with the grain two passes. Run alum Stone after rinsing. Rinse again and then pat dry and apply serums and moisturizer

Ladies...just a tip I learned by accident (lol): Use a men's razor! (Quality one like mentioned). I used my bf's razor on a trip bc I forgot mine & was blown away by how much better it worked! Exact brand/ same type (just mine the women's version.) I believe since theirs is made & primarily used on the face, the blades are better quality (at least sharper, imo). All I know is my shave (even time btwn needing to) def improved when I switched & started using the men's. *Of course, don't use/share your spouse or bfs tho like I did the 1st time tho - def get your own!😄😉 Hope maybe this is helpful to someone.✌

Gillette SkinGuard is great, i found the Razor using half a DE ( Double Edge ) blade called The Twig from Leaf Shave very good head pivot as well and they are relative cheaper the blades, by the way i´m from Denmark here prices are insane on shaving blades regardless i know DE blades in THE USA are cheaper , yes THE TWIG is expensive but last you a life time. oh and the so call wet shave community says shave 3 steps 1. with the grain. 2. cross the grain 3. only if you REALLY want against the grain, i finde your video very good and informative....Thank you

I normally use the Bevel straight edge razor (which has helped tremendously) but the Gillette shaver felt more agile and smooth. I also got the acne cleanser you mentioned and I like it, too. THE 10 COMMANDMENTS PREVENTING OF INGROWN HAIRS: 1. THOU SHALT NOT USE DIRTY BLADES! Using a blade that's been used way too many times. Yes, this one may be obvious, but be sure to keep your used tools as clean as possible. Soap and rubbing alcohol will destroy bacteria. 2. HONOR THY DELICATE SKIN! Too many blades! If you are prone to ingrown hairs then you don’t need 3 or more blades. 3. DO NOT TAKE PREP TIME IN VAIN! You should be using a warm/hot water prep (5 mins). Then leave the shaving creme on for more than 3 minutes to really soften the hair. The hair stubble should literally fall away with little or no pressure at all. Pressing hard is the problem! Be gentle ya'll. 4. THOU SHALT NOT GO AGAINST THE GRAIN! Shaving against the grain. Shave in the direction of hair growth (usually down, but perform a face map to be sure). 5. THOU SHALT NOT PRESS! Pressing too hard on the skin with the blade. A gliding, light touch is all you need. This is likely your biggest issue. 6. THOU SHALT NOT PASS! Too many quick passes with the blade. One pass per hairy area - going 1-2 inches downward at a time - will prevent ingrown hairs. Always shave like you might cause damage, not like your mowing the front yard lawn. 7. THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT OVER SHAVING! Shaving too many times. This rule is hard to follow especially if you have to shave for your career but if you are prone to ingrowns, try shaving with an electric clipper. The results are not super close but no one but you will know the difference. Ladies, try waxing. 8. THOU SHALT NOT CLOG! Use of skin/pore clogging cremes or lotions. These keep hairs from growing up. After a shave, keep your skin bare; let the tiny army breath, and allow those newly shaved, really small, microscopic hairs to grow out just in time for the next shave. 9. KEEP THE SKIN FREE! Avoid tight fitting clothing around the Adam’s apple (neck) and/or below the waistline region. 10. REMEMBER TO EXFOLIATE! Not enough exfoliation to remove excess layers of skin. Use a skin care brush for razor bumps as directed. Brushes also tease the hairs away from entering the skin. Try a WIZKER brush today!

I have EDS, and hair removal is a nightmare! Ok so ... love your dermatologist perspective skin care vids and I love your take on shaving but I must say, I’m an old school barber who shaves men professionally and the whole idea for a shaving cream is NOT just “lubricant” for the skin; that’s only half of the story. While using a simple lubricant like hair conditioner is great for hair length that’s already short (I.e. areas that are already frequently shaved) it’s NOT good for longer hair. Traditional shave scream is meant to both lubricate skin AND lift(and sustain hair in lifted position) for the duration of the shave. It’s basically like when you see the barber pulling the skin taught to get a “closer” shave, the cream is pulling the hair taught to meet the razor at the perfect angle. Anywho just wanted to throw this out there! Take care of yourselves!!

I suspect you whiten your teeth? Good information on shaving. I use a double sided safety razor (my grandfather recommended it before there were disposables). He let me shave my arm when I was about five, great memory. After use I open it up and clean the blade routinely. There have been studies on how to help blades last longer, like MIT level studies so they can last weeks. Also the blades can often be recycled. another plus for the non disposable type.

A thing I've learned aswell is to not push too hard on the razor. That just irritates the skin uselessly.

So how do I go about my skin care routine when shaving? Cleanser to prep > shave > cleanser again > moisturizer > sunscreen?
