I have just scrolled down and read a tremendous amount of comments and I see a "trend" repeated here. All of us watching this video are saying the same thing.... be trendy if you want, be traditional if you want: you do you. Listening to professional designers is fun and can give you lots of ideas but remember, this is all their taste....their ideas of design which in turn, keeps their design business thriving. Do not let others make you feel bad about your choices.

Absolutely! I watched out of curiosity to see what's "trendy". Lol, I guess I'm accidently trendy because we don't have most of what now is "out" but our home is about us. Our artwork are family pics and trinkets picked up traveling. As long as it's neat and clean, no clutter, I'm happy.

Furnishings for today are very boxy with straight lines. So I don’t know how this is considered OnPoint. I had an interior designer basically saying what you said, if the curtains aren’t being used as curtains, get rid of them.

When my husband and I go on vacation, we buy art from local artists, and have them framed back home. Not only are they originals, they remind us of the places we have been to every time we look at them. This is something we started doing a number of years ago, and so glad we did!

Yes! We have done some of that also. A beautiful pencil drawing of Venice hangs in my bedroom, bought on the street, but framed beautifully at home! It is an original art print on a tiny wall adjacent to my closet with a tall narrow Venetian mirrored jewelry cabinet sitting right below it. I found a silvered, lidded box that sits atop the cabinet and that area is really my only decor in the bedroom other than the bed itself, a beautifully full length framed mirror and a smaller Venetian style collage mirror that holds the school pictures of grands. Somewhat monochromatic with silvers/champagne colors in wall frames, wall paint and headboard. Then a gorgeous rug underneath under the bed with a large tan, black and white contemporary floral, simple bed dressing with a few simple solid pillows that can be changed out when a new look is wanted. Tossed a long white pillow furry West Elm pillow just recently. Understated glam. All white woodwork, dark walnut oak floor. Next to find is new lamps!

This was fun to watch but I love vintage and a lot of the things dissed in this video. I am rebelling against the " work your butt off 1,000 hours a week to BUY buy BuY whatever someone else decides what is "in style" so that you can just pitch the items a few years later that you worked hard to buy, so you can get back on that rat wheel to work another 1,000 hours to buy whatever they tell you is "in style" this week so you can throw it away whenever they say you should, again,...to repeat it all, yet, again. F O R G E T. T H A T. The quality of vintage products is amazing. On a side note, A lot of the "designers" are members of the Epstein Island pedo group and it's almost creepy that these weirdos are telling us how to be "cool". Yuck. Sooooo, let's agree to Disagree....designers are not WORKING and buying For YOU. It's Your Money and Your hard work so I say...decorate with what YOU LOVE...not what someone else tells you to love.

I live in poverty. I am EXTREMELY house proud. At 61 I own my home outright. It has taken me decades to get the warm colors, shelving, decor the way I want it. Very seldom in my life have I bought new. My house is a combo of dumpster diving and thrifting. It is my dream. My oak cabinets that I stripped and refinished after being rescued from an abandoned home - proudly shining honey . If you visit you will think you time traveled to the 70s. Make your home yours.

I don't understand the appeal of trends. There's no personal touch, no imagination. I'm 74 & every piece I have is because it touches me in some way. I like that nothing in my house "goes with" anything else; yet the end result has brought me possibly the nicest compliment I've ever received--from my husband, both my son & my daughter (separately & many years later), my sister, my mom & others, saying about whatever house we lived in "you always put together a warm & inviting home." We struggled financially and there was never $$ for decorating; but that has nothing to do with how your home comes together. Go with YOUR taste, YOUR idea of what contributes to an atmosphere which makes you happy & comfy in your own space.

After marriage, we bout a whole house full of early american with avocado and gold throughout. When a tree fell on out house in Texas we took a wall out, worked with a designer Bought Jaunty Persian rugs, engineered dark wood floors. Beautiful...wood tables carved. I like it all and I am keeping it. Our theme, as Christian's are a few beautiful crosses, a wonderful copy of the hand of God touching the hand of man above our couch.💒💞🙏😇🥰

Design rule #1: You can design anything anyway you want. All you have to say is “I intended to do that”. Yes, that’s what 4 years of graphic design taught me. At the end of the day, design your home so that it feels like your home, not because it’s “trendy”.

When you said ‘bed in a bag’ I didn’t know what you were on about? You started showing pictures and I just burst out laughing. That’s so true. We’re so captivated by the advertising agencies we don’t see how contrived it is. The other valid point you made was we keep things because they were expensive. That’s so true. Curtains that should have been taken down 5 years ago remain in place because of the financial investment lol 😂

73 yrs old so I have seen it all since the 50s...every single decorating trend...so a RULE that will never be broken ISSSS : whatever is in now, will be out tomorrow...gotta keep selling furniture, paint, soft goods, and decorating services. The life cycle of trends gets shorter and shorter and shorter...so if you want to be trendy, do it yourself, buy less expensive materials and be prepared to toss and rip it out later...no big investments or you will be so sorry you wanted thousands of dollars on those today cabinets, floors etc all the big ticket items. SUCH a waste! Better to put the big bucks in your retirement fund and retire early and have fun. I retired at 50 yea...to a sailboat...not much decorating though we did remodel a 45ft sailboat saving about $100,000 doing it ourselves. We then sold the boat reinvested the money in a house in a tropocal foreign country and used THEIR style. The life cycle of trends here is slloooowwww which suits us, the whole lifestyle is slow and savor the moment, which suits in retirement.

The only thing I have not seen return was the bell-bottom pant! It is always lots of fun to incorporate something new occasionally to perk up our lives and truth be known, there is really no right or wrong way. Each new generation needs to understand life, for the most part, is FUN and don't get bogged down in "herd mentality" and follow what others dictate what is cool or right or wrong. The one thing I think is so wonderful about this generation is that diversity is celebrated. People are wearing the clothes they like the hairstyles they like and yes decorating their homes in the style of their choice. I love that there are so many options in all of these categories and people have so much to choose from. Whatever helps them express themselves and makes them feel comfortable. If you don't wear what's trendy on instagram and pinterest, you're boring or not cool. Very mean girl - esque. "Diversity" is only being celebrated if it's the "right type of diversity" lmao. I have a sports memorabilia wall in my den with framed items from Atlanta's baseball teams (beginning in the 1950's!) and the 1996 Olympics. I have several originally very expensive "brown furniture" items picked up from flea markets that are still sturdy and lovely after 75 to 100 years - purchased for little money - and they will NEVER be "chalk painted." I think young people are finally seeing the value of old and solid over IKEA as they are the ones I see shopping for real wood at the flea markets. Real gorgeous china and crystal is making a comeback, too! Hurrah! I have lived long enough to see them see the light!!!

When I make changes in my home, I do them for myself and for my family. I don't try to impress others. I've also found that while some people may like to have everything new, it looks too 'designed' for my taste. I prefer the look of a home that has gathered many items over time. Some are well-loved and I've updated them from time to time, some are new and some are there as treasured family items. I must be doing something right because I've had many friends tell me our home is warm and welcoming. I've bought well-made furniture and it has lasted for years and was worth reupholstering and have also refinished end tables, an armoire was painted for my granddaughter's room and have refinished a desk that was the first piece of "good" furniture my parents ever bought. It's been used by my siblings and I, my children and now my grandchildren. Make your home what you like, that doesn't mean you shouldn't pay attention to what a designer has to say. A good designer will listen and help you work with what you wish to keep and stay within your budget.

I've fallen hostage to following trends a couple times and it never worked out well. Fads come and go and keeping up with them can often involve purchasing expensive items that might look "interesting" for a couple years but are horrible in practical use and absolutely worthless once the fad passes. My home has its own style. And when I decorate my spaces, I like to adhere to the original design; changing the paint color on the walls, fixtures, carpet is the most I’m willing to do. Trends come and go. The gray/black mono tones are depressing and industrial looking. I need my home to warm and inviting and relaxing, that’s just me. Color makes me happy! I love color! For some years now, I've been using a large Lane Acclaim coffee table with dovetail inlay, up on higher legs, for my computer monitor. The drawer and skirt were broken in a move in '79, and no one wanted the old thing. When I left home, I took the top with me and kept it carefully for years before finally deciding on this purpose. It isn't worth much, objectively, but I always thought it was beautiful, and it also has crayon messages written underneath from when we were kids. I never thought it'd be "trendy" again - nor do I care. I just love it. Use what you love.

My sister, who flips houses, just showed me "before and after" photos of a kitchen she redesigned. I loved the "before" kitchen, which had dark wood cabinetry replaced with painted white - yuck. She could have sold the "before" house to someone like me... and saved a bunch of money! I still love wrought iron with dark wood, and real (not faux) Tuscan decor, but I agree about too many pillows on the bed, and I agree about going minimalist with collections rather than having "themes" that have non-useful decor.

I flip homes as well.. mostly as a hobby not necessarily full-time. I absolutely HATE the way the younger generations slap a can of paint over anything and everything. Paint is fine for an ugly old beat up piece of furniture. But, otherwise a beautiful and natural wood grain is so much classier. I NEVER paint the cabinets in the kitchen. I only use wood stains. My homes normally sell very quickly because they are beautiful. No vinyl, no painted wood.. only granite, porcelain tile and natural wood colors.

My first time finding you. I get the intent but I also think that individual circumstances and tastes need to be factored in too. Not everyone can afford to completely overhaul their designer choices from the past with new things (like me after losing my husband and a heart transplant). I saw make your home clean, bright, and comfortable in whatever style suits you. I don't visit people's homes for their styles or decor but to see THEM. I did move away from the color scheme that you mentioned to something more coastal because we live near water. It's also lighter and more airy looking which helps with mood. My previous colors were dark and when it was cloudy, il looked gloomy. The rust color in the upstairs hallway and stairwell looked great at night with the warm lights burning and especially in the crisp, cool nights if Fall but not so much in summer and Spring. My walls are now a light, sky blue and my trim is white which keeps the light all year round. Pops of color added in winter (throw pillows, throws, etc.) keep it from seeming too cold. I also have a lot of plants and the green keeps things looking alive and vibrant. It suits me and my guests like it. These colors will also make it easier if I want to sell at some point.

Loved your video! We are building our forever home and I have been rethinking how I approach our home decor. I don’t like a lot of clutter any more and I am willing to go without until I can get the pieces I really want. We live in Central Texas and I think some classic decor can be regional. The design for our home and decor would best be described as Modern Western Ranch. It is hard to find this style because all of the “western” I search for is to kitschy. Curvy iron and wood will be making an appearance in our home but with a natural feel. My husband grew up in Northern California and his Dad worked for the forestry service. I am trying to convince him to use one of the beautiful wood pieces and welding a base for it to use as a coffee table. 😊

I loved the ideas and laughed throughout this show at this couple's humor. I'm attracted to the cleaner, lighter, brighter look but have so many things I've collected over the years. I've recently sold myself on the idea that I can put a lot of stuff away in clear plastic boxes, label it and take it out later if I miss it. I don't have to display everything now do I. Luckily I don't like signage, frosted glass, bed in bags, Tuscan look or very shiney floors, so I may be a little ahead of the game starting out the gate. One thing I must do is stay home a little and clean my house more often. Signed, from a 72 year old photographer, artist, grandma who is still on the go.

To paraphrase a designer I like to follow, Maria Killam, “all trends have a 10 year cycle.” That being said, I do not care for the current black and white trend in design. For me, it is too stark and cold and does not feel inviting. And it all looks exactly the same after looking at 5 such homes. Pottery Barn’s designs are repetitive. I want more color in my home. I love Oriental rugs, blue and white Chinoiserie, Schumacher fabrics, Thibaut wallpaper, French caned anything, and the literal grandfather clock my husband’s grandfather made in 1979. Unfortunately these things are more expensive and difficult to find, as there is no one who makes classy AND reasonable affordable furnishings/fabrics/wallpaper. Ballard Designs has been the closest one could get in the mass retail market, but even they have caved in to the colorless hygge Scandinavian hype this year. But of course to each her own!

There are plenty of ways to warm it up. I have always loved this look because it feels timeless and it's easy to build yourself into it. Take your favorite color (or two) and incorporate it as an accent color in a few different shades. Layering textures also make a room feel more inviting and not stuffy. Obviously, there's something for everyone, but the look they have can definitely be softened.

I think you hit the nail on the head - avoid TRENDS! Classic design lives longer than 10 years. All the things you named are classic and timeless. Everything they named was a trend, not timeless, classic design. It’s like clothes - you can own an expensive little black dress for 20+ years, but buy the cheap trendy jewelry and scarves that are in for the season.

Soon all the “new trends” will be dated too. I personally love the Tuscan look with the cozy warm colors. Not the style I would particularly want in my home but I think it’s beautiful. Personally I think you also have to consider the style of your home. If you have a Tuscan style I think you have to keep some elements of that style in your home. Love those ornate front doors with wrought iron. They have a classy expensive look. Just my opinion. To me, super modern is cold and uninviting. You clearly have to do what you like in our own home. It’s neat to get some ideas from new trends but only to help you refresh the style YOU like. I call my style modern clutter. lol I like clean lines with a cozy feel. I like “stuff”. Cozy cottage meets modern eclectic. I like pillows and throw blankets. You have to LIVE in your home, it doesn’t have to look staged. No matter what, there are always going to be people who don’t like the style you have in your home. The great thing is; they don’t have to live there! lol
