Agree with all your points but it costs money to change out and a lot of people don't have enough to keep their house updated. What I find helpful is keeping the clutter out and keeping it clean. When you do buy things for your home, stick with neutral colors and classic furniture. Add color with your accessories which are cheaper to replace.

Granite is never really outdated. Natural stone is always a classic and can look very nice when you update other parts of the kitchen. Not everybody hates it anyway, when you know how to make it look updated and besides, let's stop wasting good natural materials that were ripped off from Mother Earth and sending them to landfills. I agree on refreshing the paint as it can get grungy but always go with the color you like, not necessarily with what is on trend at the moment.

If you care about resale, pay attention to trends. Busy, dark granite is very dated. It chips and stains. You can get some prettier white granites, less busy, if you want to go that route.
@vaderladyl

@@christinabeck9316 Doesn't have to be necessarily white and can be granite, I n my area, houses are selling just fine with granite because like I said it is a classic and they are updated kitchens. Not everybody cares for white nothing. Most people cannot do the whole renovation and are not thinking about reselling, anyway. They just want to update what they have. I happened to know several customers from my business who had their kitchens renovated keeping their dark granite and their kitchens looks super nice. I will buy the house like that.

I never understood the wide grout until I worked as a designer at a tile store. As ugly as it is, it is mostly for fountain purposes. Large tiles, especially stone or Saltillo tiles, are not square. The grout joint is needed to help fudge the spacing to ensure the tile looks straight. Unless large stone tiles or large ceramic tiles have tapered butt joint edges, your tile person will most likely have to use a 3/8" joint.

Aside from exterior issues, I would say first remove wallpaper and paint walls, then rip out flooring if it needs to be changed (so you don't drop soggy wallpaper or drip paint on new flooring or carpet.) If there is wood flooring under carpet lucky you. Sand, stain and refinish with polyurethane -- matte or satin, NOT gloss which acts like a mirror and creates glare at every window when the sun hits the floor. If you have higher ceilings you can add taller baseboards and crown molding to add richness to a home, at least in the LR and dining rooms to start with. Those are good winter projects when you can't work outdoors. Then redo kitchen and bath if needed. Unless the residents are contractors, save up to have these done professionally so that they get done RIGHT and don't sit around forever half finished. If cabinetry is still in good condition, you can have a resurfacing company replace doors and cabinet fronts if they are outdated and if the general layout of them works. You can change out counters in kitchens and baths, also change large mirrors in baths to round, rectangular or oval individual mirrors. Install a microwave OVER the stove with a built in fan to maximize your counter space. As for baths, remodeling or enlarging a bath can add a lot of value, I think, and make the home more workable for a family with kids. Sometimes if a bathroom is very tiny you can take a wall down and remove some square footage from a bedroom and add some square footage to a bathroom so you can have two sinks, a tub, shower and laundry area that is not so tiny (especially as in many older homes there is just one bathroom in the house or on that floor). We just changed out our cultured marble 1980s bathroom sinks and counters with granite and underhung white ceramic sinks. We are SO glad we did that -- what a modern update. Also updated the faucets with sleek modern brushed nickel that are a breeze to clean because there are no nooks or crannies to catch crud.

We moved into our new home a year ago and have already done most of the updates you mentioned. I am guilty of not replacing the boob lights though in the two halls. I need to "release the girls" as Jack would say. I have tackled most of the big ones though like countertops and faucets, doorknobs, and floors. You have the best decorating videos hands down bc you two are very relatable and funny. I laugh every time I tune in.

Love your videos! There’s an easy way to clean the jets in a jacuzzi type tub. Fill the tub above the jets with hot water. Put 1-2 cups of powder cascade in it and run the jets for a few minutes. This was such a fun video. The boo . . . b light segment had me laughing out loud. And yes, we do have one in the living room. It was a fast, efficient fix to a situation. No hate received and no hate intended, but we have the saltillo tile with wide grout throughout the house. It is a staple of New Mexico homes as it has cultural significance. While we live in the Pacific Northwest, I grew up in NM, so having this tile in my home is very special to me. Love the videos and keep them coming.

I painted grout in a bathroom -- last project before we sold our house - the last unremodeled part of the 100 yr old house we worked on the the entire 30 years we lived in it. They were small unsealed terra cotta tiles laid on concrete probably back in the 1970's and demo was beyond anything I could deal with (my plumber said it would involve massive $$$ to deal with pipes), so I scrubbed the hell out of those blasted tiles one last time and spent two weeks crawling around on the floor with a tiny paintbrush filling and painting the grout. Of all the work we did on that house over the years, it was the most tedious and frustrating. It looked surprisingly good when it was done, but was a temporary fix.

I enjoy these videos so much, but have to chuckle. I follow several interior designers and they contradict each other constantly which tells me that whatever updated style you like....love it and enjoy your space. Another youtuber just yesterday went on about HATING black hardware and door knobs and unlacquered brass. I recently moved and have some of these things that I will slowly get out of my home, but started with door knobs--totally agree! I went with brushed nickel because it seems more timeless with a scroll design because I like softer lines amongst the straight doorways, etc. Just an update makes things feel fresh and your own and that is all that matters. Love the ideas and you two are adorable!

What I find interesting about hard wood floors, is that as soon as they are installed at a significant cost(and a god awful mess after sanding), they are immediately covered up with large rugs(and of course, furniture). If you're going to cover up to 80% of your floor with rugs, you may as well do carpet, especially in a cooler climate. Vacuuming and dealing with pet hair is easier and faster with carpet as well. Dogs claws make a mockery of hard wood floors. Friends of mine spent $25,000 putting hardwood flooring in their entry way, living room and kitchen. Within two days, they were extensively gouged by their dogs' claws as it ran around the house.

What a waste. I'm definitely not a fan of dogs in the house. I cringe when I see home magazine photos with a dog perched on a pristine white couch. We all know that the couch would look gross within a few days if a dog was allowed on it. And while we're on the subject of dogs. I HATE inconsiderate people who leave their barking dogs outside as well. Some dogs are wonderful but most are just a noise-pollution nuisance. There, I said it. I feel better now:)

I actually disagree on the Corian. I used it in my kitchen. It’s very expensive to do without seams which I needed. I am tired of separation of the walls to the backsplash bc I live in an old house and gaps just appear in places I don’t expect it. Also unlike granite Corian is antibacterial easy to clean and comes in many different styles and never emits radon. All stone emits radon. Be careful which ones you choose to install and find out where it comes from. Corian is Nsf rated for antibacterial properties granite is not. Most stones even composites are not. Check Nsf ratings for countertop materials and water filters. Otherwise agree with your recommendations.

@@Chereese0808 they look better but I needed seamless up the wall from the counter. If it’s slab it doesnt work for that. I think both are porous and not Nsf rated for antibacterial properties which I also needed for the kitchen. Style wise I can see why designers prefer it. The corian however is what you find in commercial places and doctors offices bc it’s not porous. Same for Formica 😯. Formica is not porous.

@youbetcha108
@youbetcha108 2 жыл бұрын
@mary Formica has come a long way. They make it so it is completely seamless. I was amazed at what I saw in Home Depot. Great thing about it too is that the cost does not prevent frequent updates when you change your kitchen. So if you paint your cabinets black a seamless white Formica top would look very nice. Or paint them blue and use a grey top. Whatever. It’s just not cost prohibitive. And Formica is antibacterial bc it has no pores. Easy to clean not heavy and easy to install. No reinforcing the cabinets for the added weight of natural stone. Good luck with your project Mary.

If and when a few dollars come available, I will surely begin with the door knobs. I am sure the lever ones will be easier for me to use, too. Oh, Beautiful faucets! They are the things that dreams are made from. Lighter curtains in the place of our heavy expensive drapes from 25 years ago will really help to lighten the place up. Now it just feels gloomy.
