I’ve got a soft spot for “Dagon”- it’s funny to note that it’s not an adaptation of the story “Dagon”, but of “The Shadow Over Innsmouth”. Which is my favorite of Lovecraft’s work, explaining one reason why I enjoy the movie so much. They changed the location from the New England town of Innsmouth to the Spanish or Portuguese coastal town of “Inboca”, or “Imboca”, translating to “In mouth”, approximately. It was a clever little detail, like the protagonist’s Miskatonic University sweatshirt. I recommend watching this to anyone who likes practical effects in their horror movies, as opposed to CGI, (which it only uses sparingly), and fans of HP Lovecraft. Enjoy, and thanks for the great video!

Turnip Juice That’s cool- I’m not a gamer, so I didn’t know that about Resident Evil. I’m not surprised, though- so many games, even apart from the ones that are directly about his stories, take a lot of his ideas and incorporate them into their specific settings. My stepson is always showing me things that are “Lovecraftian” in his video games, because he knows what a big fan I am. Mainly things like “Bloodborne” and “Dark Souls”, which really look incredible. When you’ve got an idea that strikes a chord in a lot of people, it’s inevitable that some of that will inspire them to create similar things, imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all. Thanks for your comment- now I’ve got to look up that Resident Evil game and check it out!

People need to realize that the Thing 1982, and the Thing from another world early 1950s, both were based on the same book "Who goes there?" The 80s version was more true to the book. It explores the paranoia of not knowing who is human and who isn't. This story was around long before the movie Alien came out! This pertains to the comments below not necessarily the video. There is no way in hell that Alien inspired the Thing. BTW, saw Leviathon in the theatre back in 1989 with friends. The one thing we all took away from that movie is that it was basically the Thing 1982 under water. Still not a bad movie though. Deepstar Six, which was definitely Alien underwater, came out in 1988 before all the above underwater movies were released. Still one if my favorites though.

Ghost Ship and The Meg never deserve mentioning. Ghost ship had one good scene and that's it. The Meg is the movie that could have been but we got a shitty PG 13 crap fest. Do you know what happens when a Megalodon approaches a beach full of people? If you answered nothing than you'd be correct. I'd rather watch Orca again than The Meg.

Below is SO underrated. To bad the Weinstein released it in such a bad way... The wirst being that it was made for a reason : a deal with Warner who was releasing Ghost Ship at the same time. Basically they said 'you fuck up the theatrical release of your B movie, son our horror semi-blockbuster can have some space in theatres, oand in exchange we don't release any big budget against your next Oscar-bait' !

@@Gregbaltzer Ghost ship opening scene is so good and mercilessly bone chilling, that it feels like a cut out from a different movie.

This is a video for underrated films. Since the Meg made over half a billion worldwide I don't think that qualifies as underrated. It's an ok popcorn flick at the very best. Same goes for 47 Meters down to a lesser extent. Much smaller scale film, but was still a big hit that got plenty of attention. But like the Meg, it's an ok movie at the very best. The best part is the ending which is ripped directly from The Descent. I certainly agree with you about the Lighthouse! Although it received plenty of praise, deserves to be seen by more. If more people saw the Lighthouse probably be a lot less complaining about Pattinson being The Batman. The guy ate mud on the set to get into character.

I would also recommend The Beast and Creature. Both movies are base on books written by Jaws author, Peter Benchley.

I really want to like this channel. You pick really good subjects. But there is something about narrator and the script he is reading from. It rubs me the wrong way. Almost like a salesman pitching something. Anyone else get that feeling?

Yep. Same here. His cadence and voice actually made my stomach turn. I don't know why. I just couldn't finish the video.

Glad to see Sphere on here. Was my first Chricton novel I read that wasn’t Jurassic Park, and the movie stays pretty close to the book with the only a few moments that completely different.

Ok, it seems like people don't understand why The Abyss is on this list. This is mostly because it was one that started it all. It was one of the reasons why all these deepsea horror movies were created from 1989 and throughout the 90s, and so on. Keep in mind film studios would follow a certain movie theme be it a space horror, a disaster (Tornado, Volcano, Earthquake, Shipwreck, or whatever). If one studio was making a major movie, the other studios will try to either out due one each other or get in on the next movie trend. Now while The Abyss wasn't a underwater horror movie, but an action/thriller/drama movie. The other movie studios and directors didn't know that at the time. They've just assumed The Abyss was going to be a deepsea horror film base on the last movie that James Cameron filmed which was Alien. Next thing you know 1989, became the year of the deepsea scifi horror films. At least six films sharing the same theme came out that year. Boy, did they missed the mark when James Cameron finally released his movie. Its kinda funny when you think about it.😅😅

arguably, in literature the father of sea horror is william hope hodgson (1870-1918) and i'm surprised that he hardly got any attention in cinema.

The reason Sphere didn't do well is because while it was written by Michael Crichton just like the blockbuster Jurassic Park, the screenplay was a very reduced version of the book. And the book was extremely popular. So this was very much a case of "the book was better".

Deep Rising!! Yes! A great Action Horror film that's Alien but takes place on a cruise ship.

I have a lot of fun with Deep Rising, but why do you call it Alien on a boat? I just don't see many similarities. Maybe I'm just not seeing it. King of reminds me of a gorier Tremors with a giant monster at the end. Very cool reveal.

As many have stated The Abyss was not underrated, it was excellent and everyone knows it. The Sphere also not underrated, it was terrible with an ending that infuriated nearly 100% of its viewers and including it on this list without breaking into laughter makes it very clear that the narrator did not write the script and has never seen these films.
