That's really funny, when i first started listening to doja cat I thought the recordings were surprisingly clean and her tracks were better balanced than the other mainstream music. (Not to mention I like her music) For that reason I use some of her songs for critical listening.

Sometimes I'll listen to music through a less resolving system and it'll be just as much fun as my main (albeit still 'budget' hifi setup) because I'll listen more to the music content and less so to how well something's been recorded/produced/mastered. A simple mono speaker is sometimes great for vocals because that's what comes through with the best clarity. 🙂

I'm so in agreement with what you say concerning audio components and audio reproduction. I'm an old recording engineer which puts me/us on the borderline of audiophilia and reality. I live in both places, but err on the side of reality. An audiophile buddy of mine recently came to my messy home to listen to a couple of my systems, including what's in my mix room. He was amazed that no matter what system he auditioned, no matter what price the components, they all sounded good. I need to say that none of the rooms except my studio, were acoustically treated in any particular way, and for the most part were normal spaces. The question arises; "how can I make my system sound better, do I need another amp, pre-amp, DAC, turntable, or better wire?" My standard answer is "what does your room look like, what's in the room, and where is everything in relation to your speakers?" Before you change one component, or waste money on what appears to be a better amp, evaluate the room, and , If you can, switch some furniture components around. I will say that, if I happen to be on hand to help with this revolutionary process of re-arranging a whole room the results usually surprise. Many exclaim that they've never heard their system sound like that. At this point I re-attach my cape and fly off into the ether, bellowing, (imagine deep echo here) "MY WORK IS DONE HERE, here, here here!! This may seem simplistic but I truly have proved, to many, that the room acoustic is 90% of the solution.

I discovered the room influence when I was 16 yo and building speakers. The physics of standing waves and reflections is where the real work should be done. The other thing is to match a system to your own ears and taste. Technical accuracy is not always the best listening experience.

Wow! An enlightening reality check from a reasonable man. I have a pair of Bose 301 (II)s from 1988, two years ago I noticed a weird buzz coming from one of the woofers so I took the mounting surround off to discover a split in the cone under the surround. I used silicone bathroom caulking to mend the split, after curing the caulk I ran Audyssey room correction and they sounded better than ever!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Sean. Point 10 put everything else in perspective: it really is all about finding the sound you love, because chasing perfection is a wild goose chase. I'd encourage anyone getting started in this hobby to experiment with vintage gear - it's cheap, so you can get a range of items, mix and match until you find a sound you like, then sell the rest on. Once you've found the sort of sound you want, you can refine it with newer items. (Or you might just stick with vintage, like I did...)

I agree, you can get some awesome equipment, better than most of todays crap for cheep. At least compared to new eqpt. It's a good idea to figure out "your sound" before you go out and spend $1000s on speakers that are great for some music but terrible for whatever you like.

Vintage rules in my opinion. There have been many advancements in audio, cheaper drivers, cheaper cabinets, cheaper electronics. Sure, very high end gear is still well made but out of most people's budget. Most budget electrical components are surface mount design and not easily repairable. The older gear is usually repairable, very solidly built, very well designed and can be purchased for a fraction of its original price. Older high end gear costs about the same or less than mediocre new gear and will usually sound better IMO.

What a great video! You touched on major topics i used to discuss with with people, im 100% with you. Finally someone who has enough time, experience and detachment of brands. To openly and rationally talk about those topics. I think most people dont understand our psychological traps and insecurities. So they tend to follow an influent group of opinions, brands, style, etc... People need to let it go and start to listen and feel. Other important topic is about those people who think sound graphs are the only truth. While they generally give good indications, only hearing and feeling it is that you have the real deal, and as you said most place arent acustically treated so it is so important to test it in your own place... Anyway, i have been watching your videos for a long time because you seems free from the chains and this video shows it.

I have over 50 years in audio and I left High End audio because of the BS. I am so happy doing that, and helped so many more people get great sound for much much less than most thought they had to pay. Doing things like buying used and products that have left the "High End" radar. My latest acquisitions are a who's who of products. By the way, I use a Crown XLS power amplifier in my bedroom studio/audio setup. Does great. My giant bargain killers from Akai, Nakamichi, Technics, JVC, Yamaha and my outright favorite and Anthem pre pro that was $3000.00 new! Got that for $175.00! Old but still great! I am putting together more vintage greats and some Class D based amplification for many primaries. F those who don't get it. Cabling is mostly BS. Shielding and connectors etc. have to be right. I don't want to get into the BS of cables. This is already turning into a novel. Like watching your stuff, mostly agree with but still in some cases totally disagree with you. That is what makes your channel real. I am not a paid fanboy. If you are great, great! If you are on who knows what, I have no problems calling you out on it. Reviewers, and magazine editors alike hate me because I am honest, and it pisses people off. Fun huh??

Excellent list! I agree with everything you said. I'd add one more: I disagree with the notion that people prefer tubes simply because they add an "artificial", "pleasing" "warmth". While warmth is sometimes a pleasing artifact of tubes, tubes can also be more dynamic, more relaxed and more natural sounding than solid state. That is, tubes are often more correct, in certain ways, than solid state. Same thing goes for LP vs digital.

Enjoyed as always. I've been into hi-fi for almost 50 years. Started with a pioneer receiver and kenwood speakers and an adc turntable. The Kenwoods were nice. I upgraded by selling my gear to friends, they knew I was fanatical about not abusing my gear. My ex wife was a music teacher so I attended many live performances. Had a good idea what live music sounded like. Always tried to get a good approximation of that sound. Only a couple of systems even came close. They were over 10k at the time. Magnapan tympani was one. Dahlquist DQ20i that I owned had a beautiful open sound. I drove them for a while bi- amping with Adcom gfa5500 for bass and Carver avr100 for mid-bass and treble. 350watts a channel. Have heard about trade show demonstrations not being all they are cracked up to be. Mostly by jamming too much equipment into a small room. One person said a 2k system sounded better than a 250k system because the room was too small. I've always kept in my budget and have a system that gives me an enjoyable musical experience. That's all you can ask for

Enjoyable as always. The only Bose products I’ve had are an acoustic wave boom box(good sound and my wife knows how to use it). Several Chevy/GMC pickups that have perfectly engineered sound systems. Currently a 2014. No need to mess with tone controls. 6 speakers, two in each door and two in the dash. I just balance the sound one notch to the front speakers which makes the artist sound like they’re in front of me but if the windows are open it’s better exactly the way they balanced it. That’s how well it’s engineered. I put the sun visors to the side windows blocking some early reflections near my ears as an audiophile tweak. Not high definition but great coherency and can listen to cds for 8-9 hrs a day(I’m a table grape grower). When I see pictures of high end systems with wood floors and blank white walls I don’t envy them at all.

I understand what you said about expensive component in a crossover but i want to ask. In sub 1000$ speakers do you really think designers put what they think sound the best or what they can aford ? (most of the time, the bottom of the berrel) which in that case even a mundorf will be an upgrade ? What crossover have you tried to upgrade ? and what were your success and your failures ? (So that i don't make the same experiment in the future)
@cgh1
@cgh1 4 жыл бұрын
It seems to me that the answer to your question is "it depends..." Some manufacturers look at the development budget compared to projected MSRP target and then choose the components that fit that budget or significantly less - focusing on ROI and profit margins. Others use a formula more associated with allocating a line item to the crossover network (to use the proffered example) as a whole/single component and choose individual parts based on that and how well the sum of the parts make a whole. The key to getting it 'right' is to approach a complex multi-part system as a single design unit. If, say for example there is a desire and budget to use a specific component like the Mondorf cap; how will the other components you have to play with work with it - or will they? If they don't, (extra) compromises need to be made or a pivot considered. These mfg's are focused on the end product/goal from a performance perspective where often the first scenario's mfgs are focused solely on a projected $ number (bean counters drive the process.) I'm willing to say that even in the sub-$1000 space, there are mfgs in both camps. The quality of any individual part is mostly irrelevant unless and until the entire system is considered. Perhaps an analogy to explain my pov: A 2019 Toyota Land Cruiser is (arguably) made of significantly higher quality parts that are better implemented overall but it can't perform off-road nearly as well as a '70s era Land Rover (that's running LOL.) That said, probably most would agree that an 8-hour highway road trip would suck in the LR by comparison to the TLC... While the parts are important, the overall mission being accomplished is far more-so. It's vital to begin with the mission and end goal in mind regardless of which approach is used. I once had a pair of cheap Becker speakers with a strategically added (cheap) super-tweeter resting (phase aligned) on top that astounded people by their performance. The design used cheap parts throughout but the way in which the parts were implemented together created this magical situation where a $300 pair of speakers sounded remarkably better than many others costing 3-5 times as much that used far better parts. The difference was in the design and care taken to create the end result. This is why a 'proper' design takes a huge amount of time in pre-design and pre-production, usually before a soldering iron ever even gets hot.

Bose has set the tone for innovation in the audio world and I've always appreciated having some of their products when I travel. Their soundlink mini speakers, for example, are hands down the best speaker at its size. You can get better for the price yes, but at its size class its unbeatable. At low to moderate volume it gives you the impression of listening to a 4-inch speaker. To this date the drivers inside the soundlink mini is still the longest excursion 1.5 inch driver ever made. When Bose wants to do something mind-blowing they really know how to do it right.

Trade Show Demo that really really worked. It literally blew you away. This is going back into the early 70’s. An Audio Trade show on the West Coast. Company that was running the demonstration - Cerwin Vega. Demo room, huge, it had to be something like 20x30x12. It was huge. Room was empty except for one speaker at the far end from where you entered the room. About a third of the way back into the room from the speaker was a small stand about a meter high. Sitting on top of that stand was a single candle in a candle holder. Simple demo. Company rep lights the candle and steps back about 6 feet. Silence….candle goes out. What, I didn’t hear anything, I think. Maybe I felt something, like a little puff of air. OH YA!!!!! It’s one of those Cerwin-Vega theater Earthquake Speakers. He’d repeat the demo about every 15-min or so.

I became a cable convert in the 80s. At first, like many I thought a cable is a cable as long as it's manufactured with decent quality. AWG12 is just as good as the fancy expensive stuff. And then one day the Mogami guy stopped by a studio where I worked. We started with blind evals and moved to open swaps and regardless, the results were remarkable. We ended up rewiring the entire Studio A (main studio in the complex) and the difference was literally night and day. We had to re-EQ the control room and even the artists that had been in the control room before & after noticed the difference without knowing what had changed. So, yeah... I was converted. So was the studio owner who eventually forked out for Studios B and C to be re-wired as well due to this revelation. As an esoteric aside; I also didn't used to think wire could have direction (figuring electrons flow through the wire the same regardless of direction traveled in the medium) until I both experienced the difference in sound and had many conversations with electrical engineers and scientists who knew how to measure and design around the phenom. This does of course requires the proper testing environment in which to test and realize results as well as testing a cable that has been designed with/around directional properties. That said, not all wire has perceivable direction... I'd challenge anyone to hear or even measure the difference in something like "zip wire" etc. Like I said - esoteric - Now back to my regularly scheduled overly verbose post... I started making both pro and consumer system cables with Mogami wire and open and blind testing them against lots of 'competitors' and especially stupid expensive cables. The results were very telling. The cables I made for 'cheap' - less than $3-4/foot back then and using good quality terminators - proved superior or at least on par with cables costing thousands of dollars (again back then.) My point is not to endorse Mogami, although they do make great cable but instead to say - yes, cables CAN make a perceivable difference - if the gear it's connected to can perform at that level. That said, there's also a limit. Anyone who spends on cables what someone else might spend on a car is usually (dare I say virtually always) just putting (snake oil?) salve on some (unrelated?) need more than creating an 'objectively' audible difference in their system. But just throwing in some old-school junk interconnect cables or cheaply made expensive units that are 'along for the ride' in the industry to make a buck will also sound noticeably worse than using a well designed reasonable solution that doesn't have to/shouldn't cost 'a lot' (relative, I know.) It's a Zen thing LOL - balance seeks the center. Ha!

I also used to believe cables didn't make any difference. But after replacing stock power lead from a high end blu ray/cd player about ten years ago I instantly noticed the difference. CDs and films both sounded much better, swapped leads back and forth to make sure it wasn't a placebo effect. Was a Mark Grant dual screen power lead I upgraded too. He is one of the best audio cable makers in the UK, very well respected in the audio community here in Great Britain. Also doesn't charge a arm and a leg rip off prices like the big well known brands like Chord, QED, Kimber etc.

Glad to hear you vouch for the Panasonic digi recievers of 15+ years ago. I still have the SA-XR25 as my main amp. It's the same as the SA-XR45 but lacking some connections and video set-up. Nice sounding in 2 chanel mode. Authentic remotes are still findable. My only disappointment is on complex orchestra music. Either the Pan or my speakers or sub-optimal setup falls short on such complexity. Concerti, small group jazz and rock are fine.

I agree. Some are so opinionated to the point of putting others down. Their opinion is the definitive one. I have even have dealers in the past that were like this. Granted they had their own agenda selling products. It's ok to have different options and spirited conversations but some folks are not open to any opinions but their own. You see this sometimes in the forums online. If your looking to get more people into this nitch hobby this will not work. A similar group of folks who think it's all about the measurements, especially with headphones. See this at headfi online. You go there just trying to get some reviews and feedback on some headphones and you see some good headphones continually getting bashed on how they measure. That's when everybody thinks their a expert. Their is no such thing as a perfect pair of headphones, speakers, gear or anything in this hobby. It's all subjective and boils down to what sounds the best to you😀

That gives me a better picture about myself: More of a music lover and a lot less as an audiophile, although I have spent substantial amounts over the years on my setup. Brands matter so much because some brands are very good at what they do and some are very bad. I will say something In fairness some people do not know how to set up their amplifier or speakers the way it is best to be set up or they don't match the right amplifier with speakers and their mixture. of components that they put together could be wrong in some way or another.

The headphone out is just so-so but for Klipsch RP-160m's, it's all the amp I need. It's certainly not my Adcom 555's, but it's very listenable.

Agreed on the "fancy parts" comment. We often find name-brand components DO sound better than generic/cheap ones in our designs, but we test them all. We tested out a fancy cap that we thought might sound better. It did in some of our amps, it didn't in others. It's certainly not a 1:1 relationship between price/brand and better sonics. And sometimes, something might sound marginally better, but it's not worth the increase in price. As with most things, the devil is in the details. ~Nicholas from LTA

Improving your system takes experience! I pretty much agree with your points here, even about Bose, despite being hated I have set up several Bose systems and just understand why some listeners like them. Nothing in your face, dispersed sound, easy to have on. Myself - resolution is king but be prepared for the expense involved. Room designed for audio down to 20Hz, correct reflection to absorb ratios, good comfortable seats. Then you can think about the gear! After getting the room right, most gear sounds acceptable but not great until your experience allows fine tuning to get the most out of it. Myself I have built tri-amped speakers and modified almost everything in my setup at some time. Enjoy the time you have available for modifying and testing, not just listening!

Great tube as always. Hi-fi it such a personal and therefore subjective thing. So the key should what matters and meaning to the listener/person putting their system together. So demos (at home) and personal listening is the fundamental thing... after making informed short lists from various sources, reviews, friends and a bit trial and error. But one thing I still find strange is that the deeper people go into hifi is usually to get tiny little often subtle incremental improvements but as you say with so many recordings of low quality it often creates more restrictions as you go... Yet the one piece of equipment every one seems to hate are equalisers and mixers..which can often do that micro adjustment as and whenneeded, but instead the majority prefer spend slot more more money on a new source or amp/s and speaker or whole new systems . When an equaliser might have achieved the same result...and also can be used on the fly when needed ...So my addition would be... are equalisers really bad? I don't have one myself but to be able to adjust things on the fly does appeal especially with such a high percentage of poorly recorded music. Any chance of some reviews or is it a No No

Great and honest video! YOU are a consistent reviewer. My only semi-disagreement lies in quality components. When you have well designed electronics better components can make a huge difference! For example V-cap coupling caps in a well designed tube amplifier can be transformative, tantalum resistors in the audio path, high quality tubes.

On the Bose point. I have a pair of Bose 901 speakers as my main setup and I have them powered by a pioneer Sx-1250 that my dad originally bought in the 70s. I know people hate bose but with the right setup they will give a lot of more expensive speakers a run for the money. And I have heard some very expensive McIntosh bowers and Wilkins setups that sound excellent but they’re 50,000$ setups if not more. So I’m looking to retire the sx1250 I’ve taken it to the shop for cleanups too many times and the thing ways a Ton. I’m looking at getting the Emotiva XPA 2 Gen 3 with the pt100 preamp. Your video on the A-300 sealed the deal for me. Thank you

I totally agree with 95% of what he's saying. And then he started up with cables. I've probably made close to $750 in bets with "audiophile" friends who claim they can hear differences between properly constructed and shielded cables. Then I show them my A-B switch box, blindfold, and a quarter to flip heads/tails. That's when they usually start to get nervous. We always do 20 trials. NONE of them, and I mean NONE OF THEM can reliably tell the differences between the various cables I have on hand, a few of which are pretty expensive. Try the same setup yourself and you'll see. Get a decent switch box, though.

I agree with just about everything you say. I bought the Acoustimass 5 system and 4 each of the Bose 401s back in 1989. When I first heard the Bose 901's in 1968, I thought they sounded spectacular, but I couldn't afford them back then. I was into audio at that point and a pair of Pioneer CS-63DX sounded great to me at a much lower price. Until a few years ago, the Acoustimass system was fine for my bedroom. However I put together a home theater system for my TV room that is probably still the best system I have in my house. After I started listening to music seriously, the Acoustimass just sounded thin and unsatisfying. I've used the Bose 401s extensively and still have them in the garage. However, they are 4 ohm speakers and are hard to drive in conjunction with more efficient speakers. All my Bose speakers are now packed away in my garage. What I can say about Bose is that their speakers are durable and last an extremely long time. My Bose speakers have survived several moves without any damage. Anyway, I entered into the world of audio in the last year or so and have upgraded my system. I have a pair of Klipsch RP-8000Fs and think they sound great. I have AV receivers from Yamaha and Onkyo and they get the job done. I won't ever go beyond the price points that I have established for myself ($1,000 more or less for speakers and $500 for amps or receivers). I've found that decent cables from Amazon and from local stores work just fine. I can't see paying more than $20 for 100 feet of 16 gauge or 14 gauge cable. My subwoofer cables are less than $10 for a pack of 2 or three. What I do have works for me and I always have music playing during the day. I'm retired, so I have the luxury of reading, listening to music, and just enjoying life in general. My music systems sound great, but I occasionally have to tone down the subwoofers. My China cabinets with delicate items in them start to vibrate and rattle with too much bass.

About the Magnepan LRS, I happen to put the speakers in the middle third of the room 10' from the back wall and use 400W pc to drive them. My system is nowhere approaching high end price but knowing how to get the best out of each component and whole system and the room is crucial. In fact low price speakers are so good these days that they seldom perform their potential because few people use much higher price amplifiers and front ends with these low price speakers.
