10 Ways to "FIX" Planetary Exploration in No Man's Sky (without a reset)

Planetary exploration is the heart of No Man’s Sky and is better today in 2023 than it’s ever been. That doesn’t mean it couldn’t be better though. In lieu of suggesting a complete universe reset with unlimited assets or the superformula, I’m taking a more reserved approach to new feature speculation. These 10 ideas would improve exploration and variation without needing a reset or hundreds of new assets, though a waterfall or two wouldn't hurt. Let’s vary resources, repurpose features, and maybe add a couple new points of interest in this 60fps gameplay video.

I think as far as the oceans go, I’m surprised you didn’t mention other kinds of oceans like liquid methane or liquid nitrogen, which happens quite frequently across the universe, so you could freeze. There could even be liquid metal like vast oceans of mercury on the surface.
@Kanaju
@Kanaju Жыл бұрын
I suppose a liquid nitrogen ocean could function similarly to the lava ocean, dealing extreme cold damage that becomes deadly in a matter of seconds if you don't escape. A liquid mercury ocean is something I hadn't considered, but would be quite the sight! Thanks for the suggestions! Rare oceans like these would certainly turn a few planets into real discoveries.

Practically any element in the periodic table can be in a liquid state in extreme states,like Oxygen,which liquid oxygen(yes it exists) is actually magnetic. A magnetic ocean would be really interesting,and since it’s oxygen there might be absolutely huge water creatures.

I personally want more deadly creatures types, give them ranged attacks, more health, smarter AI, camouflage, along with this deadlier plants besides the two we have now. Also yes please give us like ancient ruins with maybe the precursors to the sentinels as enemies and proc gen dungeon systems. The main goal could be nanites/quicksilver to earn ancient sentinel armor.

Great video! Natural POIs that can't be pinged: have you ever seen those rocks that have legs and run away when you try to mine them? Those are pretty rare or maybe they aren't its just that after you progress in the game far enough you just don't collect resources that way anymore so you just don't see them. They always surprise me when I do run across them though. Haven't seen one in quite a while now.

I'd be over the moon if they overhauled space encounters to be a natural discovery in space. Like you scan for them and you get a waypoint for one of them, then it's a matter of pulsing towards it.. even if it's just spawned, it would still feel so much more immersive than if it's currently spawned right in front of your face. I hate that. Also I completely agree with your idea to vary resources. The HUD, icons and scanner completely ruin the exploration aspect of NMS we have today and ruins any potential mystery, (you don't even get to guess what animal is a predator, icons spoil everything for you) so making resources unpredictable would go a long way for exploration and just overall keeping you on your toes.
@ericschauer5950
@ericschauer5950 Жыл бұрын
With the resources say like the crystals and such couldn't they just add in different geometric shaped crystals with the same colors, I always thought that they should have been imo.
@Kanaju
@Kanaju Жыл бұрын
I would also love permanent POIs in space instead of the magically appearing ones we have now. And I agree that the predator icons do spoil a lot of the tension. It's more immersive (and fun) to have to scan a critter from a distance and read its diet and temperament before approaching. Thanks for watching and commenting!
@Kanaju

Eric, I've always wondered the same thing. Surely having more than one set of crystal models wouldn't be that difficult to implement. I've always been baffled by that. Might be a technical thing, but I sort of doubt that.

My wishlist, everything you've added: more dense forests and mountains so that you can't see as far; multi biome planets; snowy peaked mountains; sand dunes; ice caps; higher percentage of blue skies; deeper oceans with sub biomes. Also more animals rendered in a smaller space with more audible animal ambience. More realistic trees like on the desert planets, like birch and oak. Better animal AI. The list goes on, so maybe Hello Games should work on making an official, cross gen community mod interface.

The light of sun could make the planets you visit vary a bit in coloration, like visiting a blue system and upon entering their atmospheres have a green purple or blue coloring, it's kinda weird to enter a planet w green sun and not seeing a prominent change of colour, I hope my words get my idea accross 😅
@AllyJ1141
@AllyJ1141 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, I definitely get what you mean. There are a LOT of definitely colored planet biomes, red, blue, black\white, green, etc, but very few planets actually are lite properly by their respective suns, actually, and I could be wrong, but I dont think that is how the game works at all. I dont think the sun have ANY external color to cast. Blue suns, red sun, green suns, etc. It doesnt matter. I feel like all suns just make a basic white light and the planets color that light within the biome to suit its thematical preferences which is a shame... it would be SUPER erie if we could land on a black and white planet with heavy green light from our sun, and fog rolling thickly over the hills 🤑🤑🤑
@possumwithacowboyhat5140
@possumwithacowboyhat5140 Жыл бұрын
That’s not how that works. Stars don’t actually give off the color of light that they are classified under. The light on the surface of a planet would more than likely also be yellow, as a primary factor in that is a planets atmosphere filtering most of the visible light that hits the surface of a planet. Color classifications on stars are for ease of use and don’t actually have much to do with the “color” of the light it makes.

I love the ideas you came up with! I too would love to see waterfalls and points of interest on planets. Another thing I would love to see is a way to land a ship on water, like you mentioned we already have planets with vast oceans, unfortunately, unless you want to ride in your Nautilion for hours there's no way to explore those oceans fully. One of my favorite types of planets at the moment is any biome that has extreme mountains on it, now imagine if you only saw the tops of the mountains and under the surface of the water were vast and profound depths. Just raising the water level on some of those planets would create some amazing exploration.

For common resources, they could even just randomly assign existing flora and crystal assets as those resources. I know having a common asset makes it easier to find, but simply using the colored glow on a regular bush or something could point it out as a particular resource while not using the same model as other planets. I would also like to see varying amounts of default (non storm) clouds.. there's a little variation now, but desert planets with no clouds and acidic planets that always have 100% clouds (and make storms have 100% cloud cover.. for some reason they're only like 85-90% coverage)
@Kanaju
@Kanaju Жыл бұрын
I agree! We have all kinds of mineral and small plant assets already in the game. Applying the same primary colors would let players know what they were. And I would also love more variation in cloud cover, though I will say it is pretty decent as far as I've seen. Thanks for your comment!

I'm in agreement with all that you've said. I absolutely love NMS and it's cemented itself as one of my favourite games of all time. But my master save is now just too easy! I know I could fiddle with difficulty settings but I believe there's scope to add more danger to normal saves. Areas with carnivorous animals that can actually threaten your safety, even if you have the best upgrade modules. Like you said, unique flaura and fauna only found underground, hostile, hiding rare materials or unique samples. I want to just feel that sense of unknowing, uncomfortable wonderment when I land on a planet again...

This is a good list of small-med effort + high impact changes. Although I do wish they'd focus more on what I call the three "holy grails" of procedural generation for a game like NMS: 1. Physics - mathematical relationships (think friction coefficients, velocities, accelerations, impulse's, momentums, gravity, fluid dynamics, etc) 2. Chemistry - Responses and reactions between different atmosphers, environments and material properties (Temperatures [freezing/melting/combusting/exploding], gases, liquids) 3. Biology - How creatures react with the environments and the player (poisons/cures, combat situations, AI behavior, composition) When I think of what the game could be like wit those implemented, I think of the Zelda series and how they like to implement physics and chemistry into their game design, with Breath of the Wild being their strongest example of it yet: how friction goes down the toilet on rocks when raining, electricity being attracted to metals, heat on ice resulting in explosions, fire creating air currents, and so on... Its through the unpredictable nature of those things together that creates completely unique experiences. And while those would be the hardest things to implement, the longer they wait, the more difficult(and less likely) it becomes to implement.

One thing that would really enhance the exploration experience would be some kind of boss-level threat. of course, only on some planets, like the titan worms, but make some kind of procedurally generated big bad boss-level threat that, if defeated, would give you access to some amazing loot you couldn't get anywhere else. i think no man's sky is sorely missing an actual threat of danger for more experienced players, as after the first few hours of playing nothing is really challenging anymore. imagine exploring an anomalous planet, and suddenly seeing a giant horror that blots out the sun, much like a titan worm. you make a base, tell your freinds, and then you all team up to defeat the thing. it adds a sense of reward and challenge, and adds an entirely new unique playstyle to the game.

Great video and ideas--which I concur that can indeed improve the exploration experience. If I may, I have a slightly different take to the exploration--I do believe the No Man's Sky doesn't fully stimulate their players to push exploration further, mainly because--as you rightly mentioned--after visiting a dozen or so systems some patterns emerge and they are only slightly different yet resemble things you already see, this way (would need to add assets etc and yes I am aware of tech limitations etc): - Promote Galaxy exploration [currently there isn't much "rewarding" to really try to go to other galaxies], for instance have specific resources/assets/tech/lore pieces (story lines) confined to specific galaxies and also make those not common place and/or with high rate frequency; make them more sparsely (not ultra rare, just a bit more uncommon to come about) this would give a purpose for exploring different galaxies and their systems - Something Hello Games could really do, it would be announce that X, Y, W were added to the game (being it new structures, fauna, NPC, specialized tech [even pushing forward the "Stargate" vibe that portals ooze and have retro and/or steampunk tech and/or building pieces, decor with such aesthetics] yet--as mentioned above--do not make them extremely easy to come about (like some past updates within 5 min of logging in to the game you already come across the new things and within 2 hours all excitement fades away as you discovered it all)--but also do not make it ultra rare encounters, balance it in a way that it will happen more often in a given system (with specific conditions, or planet types, or biome) - They could even add a new "race(s)" with their own tech, aesthetics, side missions, building pieces (with such massive universe new races are easy to fit into the narration) and make some of this races again confined to specific galaxies, or systems, or planets with X or Y biome--they could even add "primitive" cultures that are still not fully tech but better specialized into farming etc. They have so many ways to go about to create excitement and purpose to stimulate exploration...

I agree that caves need some improvement. Example: You land on a previously unexplored planet, which has eleven fauna and three are underground (one being rare). The first two caves you find aren't even caves, just divots. The next one leads instantly to big patch of bedrock, nothing else. You eventually find a huge cave system but it's so thick in minerals that nothing can spawn. Etc, etc, etc... The amount of time it takes to find an often substantial portion of a planet's lifeforms is frequently infuriating.

Really wish they would further expand on ocean planets and caves. Make them MUCH deeper and add more diverse varieties in the fauna, mineral formations, and wildlife within said places. I think what a few other people mentioned as well is having more aggressive wildlife with better ai and more variants of attacks used. I think that it could even be possible to add a new vendor who would be responsible for taking out highly dangerous creatures in places that could almost function like dungeons or lairs, similar to the "haunted" freighters but with an actual boss with a mechanic or two to beat it. I know that this particular thing probably wouldn't fit into the dessert idea of the game but it would add something fresh and exciting to look forward to

My ideas (use them as you will) are: -Death Animations: It would be nice to see them. I have been a little confused, when you die from your spaceship exploding, it just fades unless it has changed. It looks like you are being deprived of oxygen, unlike other ships. What about a simple explosion screen the what ever after (I have the hardest time dying) that. What if you could call down frigates to populate a perfectly preserved abandoned city. The frigates land and you find out a terrible secret, there are monsters under the ground. It grabs a frigate and devours it. If you land on a planet with these, there is a chance to be devoured. BUT you can calculate the percentage by the distance between each mini-crater. If there is none, there a zero chance. The more mini-craters an area has, the rarer resources, and the rarest resources? Inside the mini-crater itself. -Wondering bosses: What about bosses that you can find in any random location? Bosses can be located in specific biomes. Like you cure an infested planet by defeating enough wondering bosses to activate and destroy the main boss. Defeating these bosses could give rare resources, blueprints, and/or technology. You could fight the monsters in the idea above. A monster that can cause instant death is slow and very predictable. A monster that does little damage is fast and unpredictable. -Abyss/Sentinel Dungeons: Once, if they, create an asset, they can reuse. My idea is a maze swarmed with enemies. The Abyss dungeon is very scary and the Sentinel dungeon feels very alive and actiony. There is a main chamber that contains the boss. They could be snake-like, a giant humanoid or dog. A multi-headed monster. The main chamber is shaped differently, as long with the maze. Create more enemy models to populate. -Water/Gas Planets: You need to have special landing systems to land on these. They have cooler dungeons, rarer resources, as well as resources special to them. They have special points of interest and enemies. They have special blueprints salvageable. And extreme dangers. If you want to see more ideas, reply below. check the last video for my ideas: First 2023 No Man's Sky Update Coming Soon! | Deep Space Travel Break (Ep. 18). It is at the top, unless something changed. Like and subscribe to his video.

I few things I think could make player run or non-player settlements better; 1. Settlement class improves odds of higher class ship landing. This could be very useful in low economy system where S class are basically nonexistent. 2A. Better prices for trade goods, settlements that produce goods should have better supply and more depend for other goods 2B. Barter system, trade something the settlements wants (trade goods) for local trade goods or planetary resources at a better rate than selling and buying. 3. Food missions; the local tavern could request certain food items for a premium reward. These could be timed missions with an extra bonus for completing it quickly. 4. Recruit settler, at a non-player settlement find an unhappy settler and complete a mission, they will then join your settlement. Big pay off for completing all building and meeting minimum population/happiness 5A. Ship yard; For 200% normal price buy a shop native to the system with your choose of class and slots (within normal limits) 5B. Ship repaint; change the color of any ship to a pre-defined alternate. Each repaint shop wold have one color scheme (base, trim, accent) this wold help preserver ship hunting and coordinate sharing. 5C. Blue prints for pre-fab building you can build for your bases. 5D, Planet modification; slowly change Sentinel level, storm level, or flora/fauna density. (5A, and BC might be good for non-player settlements) Abandoned Settlements; these might only exist in abandon systems. They would have building reskinned to be ruined and decayed. Things you could find in them might include; 1. Lore about what happened to the system 2. Loot boxes and broken technology 3. Could be a habitat for rare flora and fauna 4. Blue prints for pre-fab building you can build for your bases. 5. Entrance to a dungeon. Guarded Settlements (Stealth mission); like abandon settlements would have building reskinned to be ruined and decayed. They would also have a new type of sentinel or biology horror guarding them. 1. At the center there would be a tower structure with a room containing a loot chest that requires three keys. On top would be a giant eye-thing that slowing rotates scaning the roof tops of the surrounding building. 2. Patrolling between building would be guards with a limited field of view forward 3. Player much search the settlement for the keys and then get to the chest without being seen. If the player is detected, the chest is removed, and a level 5 swarm of enemies appear. If the player unlocks the chest without being detected all enemies disappear and the settlement becomes abandoned. It may revert to guarded after a prolonged period of time. Possible loot; * Rare tech * Rare multi tool * New cosmetics * New building parts * Map to rare ship

I think having more realistic terrain (A.K.A those hills you see waterfalls falling from) where you are just chilling out and you come across a giant cliffside, could already be in the game, but I think that would be cool, as well as adding a north and south pole to some planets I think could be cool.

I agree with all of this. Perhaps also the ability to find through exploration, very uncommonly, something of some sort of value. Maybe it's a type and specific color of chair, or a unique poster color, or a new type and/or color of light fixture you can use in your base. Maybe it's a decal that can be applied to your ship, or something you can place inside your ship's cockpit. You could have a 1 in 200 chance of finding something like that in a crashed, non-salvageable ship. Or in a ruined building or abandoned colony. Or in the debris of a crashed exocraft lost in the wilds of a lush planet. Or tucked away deep within a cave by wildlife that pilfered it from somewhere. This gives another purpose to exploration, and opens the door to a large variety of rewards in the form item/color combinations that don't require a significant amount of resource investment to develop.

I will say that I disagree that people disagree about planets all being the same due to their repetitive art assets. I think the popularity of mods that mix, regeneration, and introduce new biomes shows there is real demand for that. Adding more biomes to planets, and being able to transition from to the next rather than an entire planet all looking the same, would be a significant improvement.

For treasure chests inside caves, I think it would be great that, instead of just the same generic "key" to open, it actually require a variety of keys (perhaps corresponding to color coded biome varieties or whatever is the predominant race for the system you find them in) that are randomly or semi-randomly assigned to open them. I do find it kind of disappointing that whenever you run into an ancient ruin, the main chest has conveniently placed 3-5 keys in close proximity. Expanding the type of keys would give you a reason to keep exploring more than one biome (or system) to gather enough of them to open the chests. I like the idea that the first few times you run into a ruin, you can't actually open the chest at the center because you don't have all of the resources needed until you've visited quite a few. Otherwise, you could even keep the ancient ruins with 3-5 keys of the same type and the same chest that requires the 3 keys in proximity to open, but then place locked chests requiring multiple types of keys at other random locations. This would also give you a reason to actually keep them in your accessible inventory, as right now, there is no point if you don't mind doing a little bit of work at an ancient ruin.

Particularly liked your ideas for altitude based generations and changing the way common resources look. I do get tired of our basic resources looking the same flowers or crystals on every world :/ The scanner already tells us what the resource is, so we never needed them to look the same. In regards to natural points of interest, they could be generated like a "set piece" in other open world games. That is, from a list of strange formations, structures or areas that have a percentage to be applied to any planet during generation. Including very rare ones that contain a rare resource or event trigger

Much like how fur was added, quality feathers, underwater "flowers" (Crinoids), scales (crocodile), and shells (hermit crab) could be added. Also, an overhaul of the "cows" to make them more like alien Bison/Aurochs/Hippos/Moose/Horse/Elephants. Better camo that fits the plant and planet colors, not just the ground - maybe even glowing stripes and/or mushrooms... And have the traits/behavior contribute more - Sentient animals can be recruited as Bartenders for Settlements, or act as Wandering Nomadic Shopkeepers. And give Titan Worms an acid spit attack. And finally a "limb variant" and texture overhaul to make each limb and add-on more like a space fantasy creature (Subnautica, ARK: Evolved) and less Ice-Age (though keep the "Sid" blob, cause that's hilarious)

Terrain Generation Variety would be the fix for exploration, but if we re talking about without terrain gen. Maybe compressing the variety of terrain within a reasonable walking distance like it was in Vanilla/Foundation/Pathfinder. Right now the terrain gen Variety is found by using the exocrafts or ship. This would help the 5 minute I've seen it all feeling.

I agree with that point tenfold with the constant generic look for resources like oxygen and sodium flowers and hazardous plants, they kill my immersion a lot because they show up everywhere on every single planet, I really think the game needs a way to hide any form of repetition to become godly, I'm so tired of seeing the same mineral deposits and jetpack boost flowers every ten feet I walk, I feel changing them would massively improve the game, and greater variation in toxic dangerous plants would be great to see too and the ways you mentioned to do that all seem perfectly fine. i also think some structures should have more variety like the mini camps on planets that have two rectangle rooms side by side with just one nanite thing on the wall and one burning machine between them, i have seen it around 17 times today while seeking structures i adore no man sky i just think its needs an update called repetition killer or something, i would even love if space stations looked different on the inside too, so far the only unique varient i have seen is the outlaw space station, but pretty much every space station internally looks the same and lastly it would be cool to see more types of anomaly planets, rather than just bubbles and floating crystals, etc. anomaly and glitch planets is one of the coolest ideas in this game and they really add a lot of exploration, interest and curiosity value to the game, i think the premise deserves more attention they could just add all these things to unmapped systems and planets never seen before i think that would be a safe bet to avoid a reset too

Agree with all of this. Especially adding a bit of danger and intrigue in caves. In general though, the game really needs to work on making things feel more like they "were always there", a fixed point, rather than "everything you need is spawned in a neat bubble around you as you move". Which is to say, all those flybys of ships, all the fleet warp-ins, the fact that there's a guaranteed maximum distance between certain resources (wherever you're standing, you know you're only a certain distance away from some abandoned crates or a source of sodium etc - and that distance doesn't vary much), the distribution of outposts and factories and other such things. Put simply, the game has a problem with either spawning stuff ON the player, breaking the illusion of a simulated world (because nothing exists except when the player's in range to make it pop into existence), and a problem with the procedurally-distributed stuff being scattered in a fairly bland noise pattern. If the procedural generation took altitude into account as this video suggests, the altitude could help to improve this pattern and make it more natural. For example, no spawning of observatories and communications towers in lowland areas; only on mountains. No factories in mountainous areas, only lowlands. If the flora, fauna and artificial spawns were all bound to these rules, you'd see more interesting patterns of distribution - you'd get a sense of the geography of the planet, instead of it being one big splat where travel doesn't actually matter that much because every inch of the planet is evenly coated in a spray of content.

useless objects is something I've always wanted, especially ruins, imagine coming across just a small ruined city full of random useless buildings, though maybe there could be a chest or something i dunno. i think something that kinda takes from a lot of structures in nms is how obviously flattened the ground is, which i get theyre there so buildings arent full of terrain, but i feel like the rule should be bending for ruins tho given they are yknow ruins. also I do feel like the issue with predictability is also an issue with the assets and biomes and stuff, like when you see a lush planet you know its either gonna be trees or mushrooms or trees with those weird big plants, and theres no mixing and matching, when you see a fire planet its either mushrooms or more weird fire plants. I think they need to mix and match different biome types to truly make planets more unpredictable, imo the biome system kinda feels like a handicap in a way as every planet can only be one thing and nothing else. Plus i think other biomes besides lush wolds need more variation in how they generate, when was the last time you saw a dense forest on a toxic world. I think forests in general need to be larger too, they tend to feel dense, but too small and then youre back into an open field

I agree with all of your points! I also wish we had ruins that were partially buried or lopsided. Coming across the foundations of an old town or a lone tower on a hill would be cool experiences even if they didn't have any treasure or loot. That being said, we do already have archaeology as a feature in game, with both downed satellites and ancient bones to uncover. Adding "buried ruins" to that system would be incredible! I also wish biomes were more flexible in their generation. Origins did help a little; now we have toxic, lush, and fire mushroom planets for example. And rocky biomes can combine with any regular biome and work in assets from the exotic planets. Plus boggy planets combine both forests and mushrooms and can feature weather from either biome. However, these are exceptions rather than rules. They prove that some of the ideas in this video are likely possible within the game, but aren't implemented for one reason or another. Of course, changing forests and assets again would require another reset, which this video avoids covering, but it is important to talk about. Thanks for your detailed comment!

One of the things I'd like to see in No Man's Sky is deeper oceans, and I think a way they could do it without messing with the bedrock layer, (I'm not sure what it's called exactly, that's just what I think of it as,) would be to raise the water level instead. Imagine taking the coding for the extreme mountainous planets, subtract ~85-90% of the peaks, and raise the water level to near the top of the peaks. You'd have a planet with scattered islands and pretty deep oceans.

For sure! I've been thinking about how exploration mostly relies on the player wanting to explore versus needing to. In the olden days limited storage capacity and high fuel cost forced you to explore landscapes for resources, but nowadays there isn't much need to walk around. Perhaps I should explore that as a topic as well. Thanks for commenting!

Not just the oxygen, sodium, boost plants need variety, but the base cooking plants as well. The oxygen/sodium/boost at least have a tiny bit of variety, but the base cooking plants are identical on every planet with an atmosphere.

My only thing with #7 is I personally think some of the effects need more depth and detail first. Snow/Rain effects always get lost in the sauce when the dust clouds kick up during a storm or on a stormy planet and in VR it's especially muddy. Its like you see a light flurry one minute then the next minute all you see is white with no in-between.

I personally want hello games to improve planets as well and i would on my own have so many ideas. I would like terraforming a planet to be like a thing. Like for example you have special technology to revive a dead planet or add an sky to planets I also like them to improve settlements indeed. Maybe add like cities and towns for people to explore giving people a reason to explore planets and make them be able of building civilizations of their own. By like making landing pads where npcs can land on or npcs from the space station can visit and you could set up shops! Off topic but i would also like for hello games to make driveable freighters a thing being able of landing.

Massive unique planetary geographic features (like Olympus Mons or Valles Marineris on Mars), visible from space, continent-sized craters, deep oceanic trenches, planetary scars, geysers shooting into space crystalizing into sparkling orbital clouds, deep forests/ jungles with a thick canopy essentially creating a tall wooded ceiling, elevated water features (mountain lakes and waterfalls). Varying random geographic features would give me more reason to fully explore a planet, instead of just finding hills on a hilly planet, pointy mountains on a mountain planet, islands on an island planet, etc. I know it'd be difficult and highly unlikely, but a guy can dream.

Another thing which bugged me is that the distance falloffs for large structures is tiny relative to their size. You have to basically fly into crashed frieghter to see one, same with those huge towers that you can donate archaeological finds to. I think the game should make exceptions for rendering large models at a distance, even at a significantly reduced fidelity. The game can already do this, probably. Rn, terrain LOD is different from plant LOD. Plants fsr away get lowered to match the terrain height, which is why u see stuff sink as the terrain loads. They already know where points of interest are. They're in predefermined positions. They could technically put huge structures on the horizon, and that would be incredible

Something that I think would be very interesting for settlements, though idk how possible it would be maybe it would be too much, is underground settlements on extreme planets. Obv, these planet don’t really lend themselves to settlements because of the conditions, but why wouldn’t people just build underground? I think that could be really cool

No Man's Sky already does take altitude into account when spawning objects!... kind of. when the generation goes to place a tree or rock etc, it makes sure that it is within a minimum and maximum distance from sea level first. Thing is everything above sea level is defined to spawn within the same limits, so you don't actually see any variation. Objects below sea level do have variation in their limits though, and this is used to stop large props sticking up out of the water because they spawned somewhere too shallow. Case in point, Hello Games could add altitude based variation by only editing a single file per biome to make certain props use different elevation values.
@ayymang2157
@ayymang2157 Жыл бұрын
One downside to this though is that you would have some planets generating trees that can't actually spawn because the terrain generation didn't generate mountains high enough, or there might not be water which would place the sea level below bedrock basically and give everything a high altitude. These props would still count towards the total number of tree species on the planet, even though they would be impossible to find and scan, which I think might be the reason Hello Games hasn't done this yet
