Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey I need help and advice. I want to finish my four year bachelors degree in French translation but I feel that there’s no work in this field whatsoever. For example I’ve looked for working positions in French translation on LinkedIn and I’ve found nothing. Also I’ve looked up French translation positions online and I can’t find anything promising or satisfying . Could we talk about what I could do with this major? Please if you can reach out to me I’d be very thankful! Hope to hear from you soon. I live in northwestern New Jersey and I’m very good with languages. I’m bilingual and my French is very good for someone who’s never lived in a French speaking country. I catch languages so well and I always get told by those that I cross paths with that my accent is very good. What should I do?

First of all, thank you so much for such a professional presentation and conveying helpful information in the domain of interpretation. I just wanted to note a problem that Iranian translators come across when they decide to continue their education in post graduate of interpretation abroad and that is the non existence of Persian language as paired language of English in universities all around the world. so, an Iranian graduate student of translation will not be able to pursue their education to become a professional translator/interpreter in his native language and for example English French or so on. After 4 or 6 years studying Persian/ another language he/she should start to learn another substitute language for Persian and that would be a real difficulty for us as translators. I hope that the international universities take it into consideration and include Persian as well as other languages in their curriculum. Thanks

great video. What do you think of companies that require you to take a free translation test? I have found a lot of Chinese translation companies have a fixed translation of the test and if I use more complex vocabulary they can't understand it.😓
@FountainBluee
@FountainBluee 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting question! I am also a free-lance EnglishChinese translator. I have been in the business for a few years so I guess I will answer your question. Right now, I only consider taking free tests when the exam is very brief and there is a solid reason for it. Most of the time, the clients can see my samples on the website or via email. However, if you are starting up (or you are bored), it may not hurt to apply and do a few more tests. The rule of thumb is, set a limit. My limit is 400 when I was more or less free. As I got busier, I shrank that to 200. Now I have enough work most of the time, so I just send in samples if they want to see my work. Make sure you watermark your samples if you don't know the other party very well. It is very easy for others to plagiarize your work if they like it. There are of course exceptions. The full-time positions sometimes require more lengthy tests. Those are there for a reason, they are usually pretty legit (and may pay well if you know your way). So you may get a more stable living out of those "gigs". Key is if you think they are great companies that are worth your time to polish up a page or two, then go for it.

I've always been interested in interpretation and kinda want to be an interpreter. I'm currently studying in Grade 12 in Canada as a Chinese student right now but i realize that Canada universities don't have that much of translation, nor interpretation programs. Besides, I look more forward to some HBA and MBA program but the universities which have good HBA and MBA programs don't even have any translation or interpretation program.( I was planning something like major in business and minor in translation/interpretation) What's your recommendation for me? Or maybe should I major in translation/interpretation and minor in business instead? And I'm also wondering if interpreters usually get employed in certain business(like some big corporation companies) or they usually just work on their own or they're employed in some kinds of agencies.

Well, I've just realized that long time passed since this video was uploaded. Anyway, today I begin a short training to become a Language Service Facilitator, who, among other tasks, has to play the interpreter roll. So, the case is I'm not high fluent in English, well It's what I think even though many people tell me the contrary. The point is I'm a little nervous, so What can I do to minimize this nagging feelings and emotions? One of the scary things is that is calling interpretation. Help me!!!

Why does the State of California requires one who only wish to become a certified translator to pass a test that includes interpretation which are consecutive and simultaneous? Is there a translator test given by the State of California that certifies one as a certified translator? I took a two year course to become a court interpreter and I haven't been able to pass the California Court Interpreter oral exam because in my opinion it is designed to eliminate as most candidates as possible from becoming certified court interpreters in order for the for the proctoring testing agency to make more money since every time that a candidate wants to take the test he or she has to pay $325. Last time I took the oral exam the recording was defective for the simultaneous interpretation and I complained about it and the proctor didn't care at all and of course I failed the exam and I complained in writing to the proctoring agency and to this date I never heard from them. It clearly seems to me that their mission is to make sure that most candidates fail many times because it is a lucrative business for the testing agency. I have invested over $5,000 in trying to become a certified court interpreter, but I feel that I have been scammed by both the Court Interpreter / Translator program and the testing agency. I was painted a wonderful paradise during the orientation and I was told by the professors during the course that I would pass that oral exam without any problems the very first time and I was in for a very disappointing surprise. Now those same professors send me e-mails offering me the secret techniques to pass the California Court Interpreter Oral Exam for a fee of almost $700 which for 8 to 10 sessions. I did it once and it didn't help me at all for the exam. Now I owe that money that I borrowed for that course plus the money spent on additional preparation courses without reaching my goal. I feel that I was ill prepared by the program in developing the oral techniques required to pass the oral exam. IT WAS A TOTAL DISAPPOINTMENT AND A SCAM.

I understand what she's driving at regarding living in a country where the target language is spoken. But in the case of Japan, a foreigner could live there several lifetimes but never get that exposure that she wants students to have. This is because there is an unofficial policy of segregation there. It's not too bad if you are Asian, but a White American will have a very hard time even if they are very proactive because the racism and insults far outweigh any potential benefits.
