I learned to check my gate frequently when I flew to the Philippines last year. My flight arrived at Inchon 2 1/2 hours after the connecting flight left. I had to spend 26 hours in the airport to catch the next available flight. And the gate changed 4 times. At least I got what amounted to a 75% refund to my ticket cost after I got back home.

The one that irritates me most, is people not being prepared when they get to the security check. We all know it's coming, so it's easy enough to think ahead and have items that need to get separate to hand, remove your belt snd jacket whilst queuing.

Someone told me something that I firmly believe after my experience. Print EVERYTHING out. Batteries do not go dead on paper. That is why I was the first one out of the queue when all 147 passengers were trying to get on a connecting flight. I had each thing they asked for in my folder and I was polite and did not yell or grumble. There was a LOT of rudeness going on at the time.

Totally agree about checking out the gate. I always go to my gate ASAP after security, to confirm it's the correct one, to be familiar with the location, etc. The larger the airport, the more important this is. Also checking any information boards whenever wandering around the airport in case of a gate change or other change.

Good advice. London Heathrow Terminal 3 is a good example, have been blind sided on this before. My eyes are constantly on the gate board, especially when the departure gate is not specified, and a few minutes before boarding time it is displayed and you then have an extremely long hike (mad dash) to get to the gate. I won't mention the British airline in question because I'm not sure if they have any control over it, yet someone must know that the aircraft is at it's gate beforehand.

Another tip is verifying your gate periodically. I've often arrived really early and camped out until about 30 minutes before boarding and noticed no one at the gate and realized they've changed the gate. And of course you wont get a notification until they send the 'hey, we are boarding now at gate xyz' fun times!! I may have learned that lesson...at a really big airport!!!

@ourtexasfamilyvideos62 Yes, I had just gone through security with one gate, limited time to boarding.. because I was put on an earlier flight to make-up for a later cancellation. Just the walk from security to the gate, the gate changed once I got to the gate, and it was about to start boarding.

I completely agree about #10. We were in Madrid and fellow travelers wanted to stay and shop. I insisted we find our gate first. Good thing because it was a tram ride away and 2 more passport checks which took about 45 minutes. We would have been in trouble if we hadn't gone to the gate first. Once through the area we couldn't go out. Thx.

Always, always always head to your gate after security. With the many times I have flown the gate is ALWAYS a million miles away. Get yourself situated and oriented there & find the nearby bathrooms. Then go shop, have a beer.

Yes! The gate one is something I ALWAYS do! I thought it was just me being paranoid or needing to get my grounding but I'm glad this is a tip you provide. Thinking the gate is around the corner is something that I've 100% done before and by going to the gate ahead of time, I've learned that sometimes it's a shuttle gate or down an escalator/hallway.

Almost every one of these tips apply to bus and train stations as well as boarding cruise ships. Another mistake people make is leaving medicine and travel documents on the kitchen table as they are leaving their home to begin their travel day. Have a list with everything on it and double check it before walking out the door. List can be on your phone, in a notebook, taped to the exit door, or on your vehicle steering wheel. Put a mark next to each item as you put your hands on it going down the list. When my sister and I went on a trip to Ireland our tour bus had to stop at a hospital 1st thing because a man on our bus left his insulin behind on the kitchen table.

I've witnessed two cautionary scenes. The first: upon boarding, a man in a bulkhead seat with no overhead locker refused to allow the attendant to remove his bag to a secure place. He argued for a few minutes until the attendant spoke to him in a way you don't usually hear. She was amazingly direct and stern. I can't quite recall whether he gave up or was removed. The second instance was a man and his son being detained by a group of four security agents. These guys were not the usual TSA folks; they were huge, dressed in black, armed, and wearing wires. I feel it is a big mistake to take for granted the polite veneer of airport service. Just behind those courtesies is a steely system of no-nonsense security.

#10: It is so helpful to have the airlines app on your phone. At the Atlanta airport, when gate has changed which meant taking a tram to the new gate. Having the app helps to keep updated when the gate changes.

Rule #1 check, check then double check. For international travel if you take medication get a official letter from your Doctor listing all your medications etc. This makes it easier going through immigration checkpoints especially with so many generic brands . Also check with the consulate etc of the countries you are visiting to make sure they are considered legal in that country. It may never be an issue but you never know. Packing : I always pack with bare essentials and usually with old stuff I can get rid off if I have to. As. I like to buy touristy T-shirts and stuff. I will wear them while away to save space. Gate checking and boarding time: First stop after security is going to the gate and from there will wonder around the terminal. Also regularly checking the monitors in case of change of gate or departure time.

Heres another thing, for international flights or trips with more than 1 leg - you're going to have to go through TSA/security multiple times. So return everything that needs to come out for TSA to its designated place in your bag, towards the ends of your flight so you're ready to repeat the process. Your things like liquids might get into other parts of your carry on throughout the flight. I'm not an avid flyer and haven't flown in 5 years but I am planning for a long international trip soon and this issue came up in my mind today. Is this an actual thing or am I wrong?

I make my way directly to the gate. Exactly same thing happened to me as you said in the video. My gate was something like B15 I found the B gates sat down had a couple beers. I went down the B gates got to B10 and that was the last one. I asked someone where my gate was she said that’s in a different terminal. Long story short I made my flight after a train ride and sprinting at full speed for 15 minutes. So yeah. Every time go through security and straight to gate. Then I relax.

Number 10 absolutely. When I was a business traveler, I never had this problem, but when I began traveling with my wife, distractions occurred at almost every airport. It's these distractions that caused me to do stupid stuff like depending on the gate number printed on the boarding pass rather than watching the screen. The gate number printed on the pass in Iceland didn't exist.

#10. Yes! I always go check my gate as soon as I arrive. Plus check signage to ensure my flight really is departing from that gate. Basically, I check the “lay of the land” to know if I get a gate update, which direction I need to go so it doesn’t cause any stress. I seriously thought was the only one who does this. ;)

Europe is the most annoying about gate assignments. I experienced this in Spain, Malta, Italy and the UK! Sometimes gates aren’t assigned until 45 mins - 1hr before the flights and everyone is glued to the screens! gates would often be changed at the last minute too. So I agree with #10, find your gate, then wander. I learned this lesson quickly in Europe.

I guess it's the free fitness program that's included in the ticket price LOL (On a serious note, if you do get in trouble with this by being in the wrong area or just too far away from the gate by mistake when the gate number is finally revealed, and you are REALLY NOT good on foot (old, disabled, injured, weak constitution), FIND A SECURITY OFFICER OR THE NEXT GATE AGENT (of a gate that is open of course, duh), they can help you by either buying you the time to get to the gate by calling the respective one that you need to go to, for them to wait on you OR they will arrange for transportation, usually some of these little "golf cart" type of vehicles that I see zipping around at airports, that carry people that can't walk very far or fast.)

Yep, not just gates but also signage. Ended up in regular line to talk to agent instead of going through the shorter line for NEXUS of which I was a member at the time. Having a passport is mandatory now but when it was strongly recommended; it wasn't so much getting into trouble entering US back then, it was getting back home to Canada from Chicago. I had no passport yet I was Canadian citizen. Even though I had 7 pieces of identification to prove who I was, I couldn't board the plane until TSA checked I was indeed a Canadian citizen. After that trip, I got the passport to go with the NEXUS card. 😅

Mistakes at security. I can't really call this a mistake, as the issue isn't me, but security itself. I am autistic. I don't do normal body language or facial expressions, and I am also hearing impaired, and because airports and airplanes are sensory hell for me, I am super anxious looking because I have way too much light, noise, people getting way too close to me, smells, and so on and so forth. I don't make eye contact with them. I communicate differently than the "Normals". TSA picks me out for extra searches almost every time, they unpack my entire carry-on and purse and I get the wand, pat down, and my shoes go through an x-ray several times. It is discrimination, but I do understand that guilty people act weird too, and it is hard to determine my weirdness from the criminals/terrorists. I have recently found out I can get a card from the airport before I get to security that says, "I am autistic." I am hoping this will make it easier. I am also looking into getting precheck too, so between the two I might not have to go through all that. Airports are super stressful as is flying because of the sensory overload I go through. The lights, the noise, the smells, people who refuse to stay out of my personal bubble of 3 feet around myself. Which throws me into sensory overload. Then I get on the plane, and because I am hyper-sensitive to all sensory items, I can feel the plane pressurizing, depressurizing, then they cram everyone in so tight. I mean, I literally have to sit with other people's arms touching mine, that is a no-no for a stranger to touch them. I don't want strangers within 3 feet of me! Oh, and having the chair in front of me cramming my kneecaps because my legs are too long. I am considering the possibility of starting to buy two seats, either an aisle and a middle or a window and a middle seat. That would give me more legroom and a buffer. I checked and legally because it is an accommodation they have to allow me to buy two seats next to each other. I am also allowed to preboard which I didn't realize before. Although, I understand that some people who don't understand that disabilities can be invisible, can get a little testy at someone buying two seats for themself. I don't know why, it they have their seat already anyway. First class might work, but I would still have someone right next to me! UGH!

My friend is the mother of an autistic boy (adult now), so I know what you're going through. Good thing you got that card explaining your situation, but I think it should be made much easier for autistic people. They should be able to register themselves as being autistic on the airline website. Things should be put in place to make it easier for you and others who have the same sensitivities.
@RiverWoods111
@RiverWoods111 Жыл бұрын
@@miavos3610 The Airlines and Airports are attempting to make it more accessible, unfortunately, they are not properly educated enough to know that autistic adults need as much accommodation. Like a lot of airports have a sensory safe room for children to go and chill out. Literally, all the furniture is for kids. The one in Atlanta was built by Delta. I am thinking about hitting them up on social media that the children's room is fantastic, but autistic adults need a room that is separate where we can sit in big foam-filled bean bags and have some fidget toys and just relax. Then they do need to add some seating in the kid's room for parents. I thought that was weird that all the seats were small, and everything was aimed at just the child. The fact is if a child is autistic then it is very likely at least one of the parents is also autistic. Autism is totally genetic just as is ADHD and runs in families, rarely does it skip a generation. Also, the Sensory safe rooms are only in the Delta area of the airport, so if you are flying United or American Airlines, or Southwest, you really can't use them. Corporate America needs to be educated on neurodiversity and what autism/ADHD really is. Tech companies have started to figure this out and are spending millions on accommodations to hire, onboard, and retain autistic/ADHD employees. It is not necessarily out of the goodness of their hearts, or the government, it is because we make them a hell of a lot more money and increase their bottom lines. These CEOs are telling the business world to hire us if you don't want to go bankrupt in the next decade. Turns out that Innovation, problem-solving, hyper-creativity, and hyperfocus lead to hyper-productivity we own. Also, our anti-social behavior and not socializing leads to us getting a lot more work done than the Neurotypicals. What we are not good at is forward-facing jobs, and communicating outside our community (we are great at socializing within the neurodivergent community, we just don't understand normals). We are also not great at jobs where we need to switch between tasks quickly, because of our hyper-focus. We have to love our work or we won't be able to do it. The airlines and Airports need to get educated to understand our needs fully so that our brain doesn't morph into neurotypical brain at the age of 18.

Mistake number 10...made me laugh. Yes, I do the same thing. It's silly, but I have to SEE the gate number sign, the awful black seats, verify the departure airline, flight number AND how far it is from food or coffee. Very early in my travels I was at SeaTac, and back then they were always changing gates from concourse C to D and visa versa. Once I sat at the wrong gate until I wised up and noticed that there weren't very many people waiting for the same gate. I LEARNED a big lesson that day.

It's good to be aware of where your gate is, but you can't realistically always visually check your gate and get back to the main area when your gate is in a 2nd separate security area of the airport and you have almost no choice of food or other amenities once you cross that second security barrier. These airports (i.e. smaller European airports) will usually have a large area for the European connecting flights within the Schengen Zone and a small section with only a handful of gates and maybe one place to eat with limited options for the handful of flights leaving the Schengen area. Checking where its actual physical location is proves worth it when you realise that you have to take a shuttle train to those gates, discover that those few gates are down another, longer arm of the terminal, or you will have to stand in a queue for a border security control to check passports and you have to factor in extra time.

Reagrding #10, I experienced a gate-mishap at Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris. The travel agency I bought my tickets from, they were aware that it would be a tight lay-over, but yet they booked me in that way. I thought well, they knew what they were doing. I had 1 hour to change planes. Well, turned out, first the plane had to taxi to the gate so we could get off, then everyone had to get their stuff and disembark. That took time (and I was way back in the plane so had to wait for all the people in front of me). And I had a map of the airport (provided by the airline). My gate was not on the map. Turned out that to get to that particular gate you needed to get a bus to a different terminal. This was NOT mentioned on the map of the airport. Luckily there were clear signs once I made it through security. Just barely made it to the bus in time. Got to the new terminal, and had a few minutes to spare before the plane was supposed to take off. Had to go through security again at this terminal. At which time they confiscated my duty free beverage I had bough at the original departure place (New York), due to them not having packaged it properly. They thought Paris was the end destination and not a transfer... And I had no way of putting that in the checked in luggage. And this of course also meant that I missed my flight. But I had been automatically put on the next one 2-3 hours later. Yes, I got my money back from the New York duty free as they had screwed up. Irritating, as it was stuff that I could not get at home.

That’s like 100 years ago. Maps, travel agents, etc. I was there too. Anyway, Idk when but minimum transfer times have been determined and computers that figure out flight options for you know them. I recently was warned my connection time wasn’t enough for an upcoming flight and we will see who wins, computer or human experience. I think because I’m not checking a bag I will be fine

Thanks! Good coverage. I have been assiduously careful & prepared when flying ever since in 1977, as a teen flying into Marseille from Tel Aviv to visit a college friend, after landing I noticed my passport & my last $100 were missing/stolen. I had to take a bus downtown to the US Consulate (which no longer exists BTW) & wait 36 hours back at the airport for my connecting flt back to NYC. (thankfully my air ticket was in a separate pocket!). The worst part was not being able to put my legs up on the low table to sleep, as a policeman kept whacking my knees every time i did this.

Once I am past security I head directly to the departure gate. even if the gate is deserted I generally sit there, and often check the arrival/departure screens for potential gate changes (has happened to me on more than one occasion). My departure gate becomes my base of operation. I do this not only to avoid missing my flight, but to also select a choice seat for the wait (more often than not, the departure gate fill up with passengers quickly).

The gate on the boarding pass is just what was planned at the moment your BP was issued. you have to keep an eye on the info board as well, because it often happens to change. Whatever the case, half an hour before boarding time you should head down to the gate designated to your flight on the info board, and make a quick visit to the loo before getting in that line.

I do the gate checking thing, but then my gate was changed. Fortunately the new gate wasnt too far away but with the language barriar and airport communication systems being what they are it made it a bit hectic. Have you ever had a check-in gate that was like 12A? Not a regular number. I was travelling around the Philippines and I couldn't find this mythical 12A checkin gate. After walking around for ages I found out it was a door that wasn't clear and that was only opened just before checkin, then down stairs then walk for a bit and then the gate. Fun times.

In some airports they indicate the length of time needed to get to the gate on the screens. Very useful! But beware, in some airports som gates are in annexes and once you get to them you can't return to the main building. So no food or drink, no shops, nowhere to buy a magazine or newspaper.

I had a layover in the Denver Airport of 3 hours coming back to MSP from Oregon. I went to find my gate as soon as I got through security and ensured my flight was listed. I decided to walk around and make some calls. 30 minutes before boarding I went back to the gate and found my flight was moved and now leaving from the opposite side of the airport and had to get to the other terminal. I made it just as they gave my seat to a standby passenger. Since the door was still open they gave me the seat but it was close. I stay right by the gates now.

When I arrive with enough time before or between flights I always head to the gate for my next flight. A few times I have found the gate number has changed. Also having walked to the gate I now know how long that takes and also know how to get to the gate. Have made it to the gate I can then backtrack and grab a coffee or relax in a more comfortable area then walk to my gate in time for boarding. Once I arrived quite early at my gate and after doing so they changed the gate for the flight. A few minutes before the scheduled boarding a realized there were very few people waiting there. Checked a flight schedule board and discovered that my flight was leaving from a different gate. Headed to the new gate and made it just in time.

I definitely do #10 for the reasons you mentioned. I at least want the gate in my sights before I stop to get something to eat or drink. LAX, for example, has a remote terminal for American Eagle flights. However, it just has a regular terminal 5 gate number. You don't realize it's at a remote terminal until you get to where the gate is and see a bus waiting there.

If you have a connection make sure your watch updates to the local time. I was flying from China to the US with a stop in Korea. Korea was one hour ahead of China so when we landed I realized that the time I had to get to my connection was one hour less than my watch showed. Of course, most cell phones will update automatically but if you are looking at a watch be careful. A Chinese couple that traveling on the same flight from China almost missed their connection because they never thought about the time change. Fortunately I noticed their connection to SFO was in final boarding and I ran back to where the husband was to tell him they were going to miss their flight. I convinced the gate agent to wait for them but it was close!

I have always walked straight to my gate. My mistake is I don't attempt to research ahead of my travel for what is located near my gate. I walk past restaurants or places not knowing what else is available. I make it to my gate and realize little is available. I don't like eating at airports either but a 14-hour flight will force me to. If I remember, I will research ahead of my arrival so I have a better idea.

Over the last 30 years, we've traveled over a 1.5 million miles & recently we done screwed up. We didn't check terminal (because we knew the airport) well, it was a fun 4am trek through trains & miles of tunnels > though because we had enough time it was just irritating not terrible. In terms of grace, bad things will happen when they do I simply start thinking about how I will tell this tale of woe (where I can embellish it & how to find the silly in it). It helps give me perspective. Safe travels! Many hugs, Z. Allora

I always go directly to my gate when I arrive. One time I got to my gate and it said the city that I was going to, it had my flight number, all looked good, but I started checking the flight online and my gate had changed! I went up to one of the boards with all the flights listed and my flight had indeed changed gates. Even though I still had more than an hour before boarding, I jumped up to find my gate, and good thing I did, it was basically 20 minutes away on the other end of the terminal. As I was walking through the airport with my bags, I got a text on my phone saying my gate had changed, finally.

Shopping- some of the airport’s duty free stuff are actually worth checking out. Ciggs, alcohol and perfume for one. Organizing your backpack- it’s a great idea to have 1/2 designated travel backpacks, that way you don’t lose composure when you can’t find your wallet/keys/passport etc if for some reason after putting it back “somewhere in the backpack” Travel light- travel lighter than you allocated weight is always a good idea too to make up for any ad hoc shopping one may do even if it’s unplanned. You “never” know you might see that great deal.

Having hard copies of passport, flight itinerary, drivers license ,travel insurance, hotel address and phone number, because we can not rely only on our mobile or other electronic devices. For a long and connecting flights having packed lunch and dinner will be money saving. Only carry on without checked bag is a lot less stressful, if you travel for up to 3 months pack only for a week, every day or 3 times a week you can wash your used clothes, I used to pack a lot and most of the time I didn't wear some of my clothes even for once. Sometimes the country that you are traveling to has a lot cheaper clothing than your country of origin. Having a notebook with all your phone contacts, credit card information, the flight and hotel information is a big help in case of losing your electronic devices.

The gate check part is usually true, but there are airports like Gatwick, that just won’t tell you the gate until a few minutes before boarding. Like boarding starts at 17:25 and the big info table tells you “Information at 17:10”? God bless Lufthansa themselves updated the info on the boarding pass at 16:40 already.
