Katrina survivor here. South Louisiana is still suffering from it. Hurricane Isaac did even more damage in significant ways because as Katrina was a Cat 3 when it hit, it moved quickly while Isaac, at a Cat 1, stayed pretty much stationary for a while. Scary times.

Some notes about Pompeii: Mt. Vesuvius originally had a "peak" on it. The eruption was so explosive, that the peak on it was blown off. The bodies weren't preserved. They were buried under the rubble which, once the bodies decomposed, left perfect indents in the rubble. The preserved bodies you see are actually concrete poured into the indents.

Regarding Chernobyl, the documentaries I’ve seen suggest that the model of reactor in question had one or two design idiosyncrasies that, with the right circumstances, give some odd and misleading readings in the control room. Problems began when they began to set up the reactor for a test to measure turbine output in the event of reactor shutdown, the aim being to see if they could “freewheel” long enough to generate power before the backups kicked-in. After struggling to get to where they needed to be, and under pressure to run the test, many control rods were removed from the reactor and a “hot spot” formed. When things started to go out of control, a SCRAM order was issued to re-insert all of the control rods to shut down the reactor. According to one documentary, for some reason the rods were tipped with a material that actually fed the reaction rather than damping it, resulting in a massive spike that generated enough pressure to blast the several tonne reactor “cap” clean off, exposing the core and sending lumps of radioactive debris everywhere.

Your mostly right. They never removed the control rods, just raised them to generate more heat to balance the water flow. No "hotspot" as it were. As for the tips of the rods. The material didn't actually feed the reaction, but caused a very very, and I mean very short moment of condensed reaction heat as the rods lowered. Think about what happens when you have a fire in a semi sealed room. ....It gets hot, but it has enough oxygen, and fuel to burn. The rods lowering was as if someone quickly tried ot seal off that room completely, but a quick burst of oxygen got in, and caused a really short but violent combustion right at that moment [explosion]. Which in turn flash boiled the increased and overly full near solid state reactor water, ALL OF IT, in about half a second, once it happened, and boom goes the only weak structural point. ....The lid. Also a hole in the bottom too.
@WardyLion
@WardyLion 6 жыл бұрын
I have to admit that the various documentaries I have seen offer up different versions of what went on, ranging from slight differences to outright contradictions, so it's hard to get a clear picture from them. "Removed" was a poor choice of word on my part - I should have said "raised" or "significantly withdrew" - that's my bad.

Matt I absolutely love your videos. You are by far my favorite KZfaqr. I wanted to say thank you for not saying that Katrina hit New Orleans. Most if not all of the people that didn't go through it forget that it actually hit the Mississippi Gulf Coast. We are still rebuilding from Katrina to this day, and you can still see the "scars" from the storm. You were right in saying that the levee's broke due to the sheer force of the water that was pushed by the storm. Unfortunately lives were lost in both areas, and it saddens us as Mississippians more than anything. New Orleans is a sister city and the devastation they suffered was horrible. We just ask to not be forgotten when it comes to Katrina is all.

Sensational Ennush it should’ve been either the 1815 eruption of Tambora or the Siberian Traps eruption since both were far worse than Krakatoa. Tambora killed far more people than Krakatoa and literally caused the next year to have no summer in most of the world. The Siberian Traps were even worse and either caused or played a major role in the worst mass extinction event that the earth has ever seen

Environmental disasters do not equal natural disasters. Environmental disaster means that it is devastating for the environment. A natural disaster can be devastating for the environment (volcanic eruptions, tsunamis, hurricanes) but industrial disasters can also cause significant damage to the nature and thus making them environmental disasters. Actually, strictly speaking, natural disasters aren't considered environmental because by definition, environmental disasters are caused by human actions.
