RiC David That era of Edge is the only time it may be a stretch, but I guess you could say that his zany personality kept others on edge because no matter how goofy he and Christian were, there was still a hint of danger to them.

I love stuff like this. Not quite as absurd but more common is lingering move names from earlier gimmicks. I wondered for years why Albert's sitout powerbomb was called the Baldo Bomb until I learned that he was in a tag team called The Baldos in Smoky Mountain Wrestling. John Cena had the ProtoPlex, though it was rarely announced (it's one of his five..or six moves of doom) well over a decade after his OVW years. The one that makes me smile the most though is The Danielson Special, which Daniel Bryan actually used fairly recently in the WWE (against Roman Reigns shortly before the concussion retirement I believe) - the 'only in wrestling' weirdness of him not going by Danielson yet having a move named after himself in his Daniel Bryan repertoire is just tremendous.
@RiC_David
@RiC_David 5 жыл бұрын
I also get way more of a kick than I should out of move names transcending gimmicks and promotions, like the Tombstone Piledriver and the DDT being called that no matter how far removed the performer is from Undertaker or Jake Roberts. Even cooler is when far lesser known wrestlers like Amazing Red or Petey Williams have their move names grandfathered into the mainstream wrestling parlance with the Code Red or Canadian Destroyer. Oh shit, I forgot the best one of all that only dawned on me recently - Sgt Slaughter's Cobra Clutch is called that because he was made into a character in G.I. Joe with the evil terrorist faction being C.O.B.R.A. Doubly cool considering he was a patriotic babyface for most of his WWF tenure. It'd be like Kurt Angle having the Taliban Twist as an All American hero.

@@RiC_David That's a brilliant bit of trivia re the Cobra Clutch. Had never connected it with COBRA for some reason despite knowing of Sarge's connection with GI Joe. @RiC_David
@RiC_David 5 жыл бұрын
They absolutely changed their character. It was done without a hard reset, except in the case of...ugh...'The One' Billy Gunn, but the buttocks obsessed ne'er-do-well of the New Age Outlaws was clearly a different character to the made-for-TV mid 90s cowboy from the Smoking Gunns. Triple H is an especially cool example of radical character changes with fluid transitions. He still wore dress shirts at the start of his D-X phase, still wore the rebellious leather jacket in his megalomaniac McMahon-Helmsley years, and so on. In that way it's one long continuation but they were quite unequivocally different characters.
@MephProduction

@@RiC_David I'm pretty sure you dress differently now compered to how you did 20 years ago. An no Billy Gunn wasn't different, he evolved and changed as he got older like we all do, from cowboy to rockabilly to outlaw it's a natural progression. @SeasideDetective2

I prefer the "Chicago Made" explanation, because Chicago is a big part of Punk's life. "Chick Magnet" SORT OF makes sense in a WWE context because almost immediately after he arrived Kelly Kelly developed an interest in him. Then, six years later, it was AJ Lee (who is of course his wife in real life). John Morrison once jokingly claimed that the initials stood for "Cookie Monster," and I can't help wondering if THAT might be the best nickname. Punk doesn't smoke, drink, or do drugs; he's got to have SOME vice. Maybe it's cookies!

You could argue the Rocks name outlasted his gimmick, since it was the kayfabe nickname of Rocky Maivia. The crowd still shouts Rocky for him
@sadowolf
@sadowolf 5 жыл бұрын
I really don't count The Rock just because his kayfabe name had to stay the same in order for his character to work. Other wrestlers on this list all had a point where they could've just changed their names because they were basically repackaged. "The Rock" was a response to the audience's unanticipated hatred of Rocky Maivia. It never got to a point where it no longer made sense that he was Rocky Maivia. The Rock is an evolution of Rocky Maivia, whereas the Cerebral Assassin we'd come to know seems like a completely different character than the "Connecticut Blue Blood."

So yeah we are british even tho im from Manchester and ultimatly prefer to be regocnised as English nobody is wrong when calling me british. @@danielthorneley8363 Yeah, as much as I like being snotty about Americans insisting on calling us "Briddish" 100% of the time (doubly snotty if they trot out the "Briddish axe scent" line), you destroy out high ground when you wrongly assert that they're mutually exclusive. And yes, to most of us, an accurate knowledge of gun terminology is like close familiarity with poisons or explosives - we don't have much of a clue and feel almost proud of that innocent ignorance. That said, I know that .38 and .45 are ammo types because I've played videogames and heard Arnold Schwarzenegger quotes.
