His wife had just started University and WWE wanted him to go down their development brand. It would have meant AJ moving away from his wife who he had not long married at the time. AJ asked for his release and WWE agreed to it. AJ spent year becoming a global superstar in TNA, NJPW, ROH and the Indies and then years later WWE resigned him.

I always felt, at least in the past when WWE had viable competition, if someone jumped over from the other promotion, the would attempt to bury them, like Vince had something against successes outside of his promotion. Not all of them, but quite a few. That's one reason Sting never went to them until there really wasn't anywhere else.
