Let's revisit the game that got me into competitive Fighting Games!! Street Fighter 4 was released over 10 years ago, and I remember the game's combo trials being extremely hard back then. Let's revisit it now that I'm older and wiser, and see how everything holds up!

Brilliant video, but watching this reminds me why I love SFV so much, even over usf4. I just don't have the time anymore to seriously commit to a game, to spend time in training perfecting such precise execution. I can play SFV to a decent level and it's based around outplaying my opponent and reacting to their playstyle. Having said that, I only think it's been a good game since Season 3.

I understand that completely but also, at what cost? Many games are taking the easier route nowadays and this is one of the reasons why SFV failed so horribly in the beginning in addition to the lack of content, etc. I understand the lack of time thing but SF really was one of my series where I felt series pride in execution. I just don't feel it in SFV. It bored me. But at least you love it :D

On Ryu's last trial the reason the crouch MK won't reach when you were first trying it is that combo only works after jump in. Deep jump ins allow you to get inside (insert jokes here) your opponents collision box and start your combo before it starts pushing you back out. This effectively negates the pushback of your first crouch jab in that combo.

A lot of people say that SF4 got them into fighting games, it was kinda the opposite for me. I tried to play it a couple times, and I remember getting super pissed off because in my attempts to understand the game's mechanics, I kept hearing "you gotta FADC," but as a beginner I had no idea what that meant, or how to do it. Everything I looked at on youtube or whatever just assumed you already knew, while the game was useless at teaching you anything. I ended up dropping the game and never coming back. 2 of my friends also had a similar experience, and it made all of us reluctant to get into fighting games. Fortunately, I eventually did get into fighting games, and now I can't stop playing them.

THIS! Fight night champion & SF4 before USF4 became what it was, were impossible for me to win at for some reason. 10 years later I can beat just about anybody I meet online. *playing devils advocate* "Okay what about the ones who are genius & god like at fighting games at their youth?" These damn trials (along with getting everyone to C rank) are the only thing keeping me from getting the SSF4 platinum. I have tried countless times on doing these moves, and I never knew anything about the term "plinking" or "piano" since I never had friends who were big into the franchise, let alone the FGC. What's even worse is that I start to lose my patience and get stressed out super quick to the point where I start developing headaches. @KinetiK001 5 жыл бұрын
@@EdgePitSwing Delayed wakeup (which was added in Ultra) nullifies a lot of vortexes, or at least makes it so the majority of the cast can only get a meaty low off their standard setup which isnt nearly as scary as an ambigious crossup/unblockable. Thus the person vortexing has to adjust their setup for delayed wakeup. However, if the person on offense guessed delayed wakeup and you DONT do it, you can also usu hit them out of their setup or get out somehow. It's not a fullproof answer but it does force the person doing setplay/vortex to think more by putting the person on offense into an RPS situation. Plus, lets say you block the setup or w/e, this game has a lot of defensive options after you block. You can invincible backdash out of loose blockstrings, FADC to beat OS, crouchtech, buffer DP etc. There's also generally a decent amount of pushback on normals on block. It's funny that people complained that there were TOO many defensive options in this game when it was big, now everyone misses them.

The lore on plinking it actually used to be called p-linking named by a Hawaiian player that discovered it when the console version came out. It ALSO gave the opportunity for kara-ex moves giving Ken a discusting corner escape with Kara ex Tatsu in the older versions of SF4. Also should be stated that piano-ing gives you 6 opportunities not 3 BECAUSE of negative edge :3

One of the things that i love about this game is the amount of fun you can have learning every single character's combos, much like marvel 3 it's a game that you can spend so much time into learning it's system. And I guess why that's why people don't like things like 1 framers, (even though plinking is a thing) because they feel like they it's too much of waste time when you can learn other things. But to me it's like learning to play an instrument or any type of sport, where you gotta practice in order to be good. But once muscle memory starts kicking in things like run stop fierce will become second nature and then you can go like hmm how many in a row can i do, how can make my combos even more swaggy etc, etc.

I go back and do this all the time. I remember going for the trophy on ps3 for the super trials and it legit took me a year. i was new to learning fighting games as well and i took it as means to learn the tricks on how combos can work in this game. a year of going at these trials for an hour or 4 nearly every day and it felt so good when i got that trophy. i can't repeat these combos any easier then when i first did them but at least i know, i can do that hard ass shit. Mokoto's trials still haunt me sometimes. i should go do those again.

I love watching high-level tournament play or highly technical SFIV matches. I just hate playing it. This is exactly why. EDIT: To be clear, I hate playing the game because of all those tough-ass links. When I started getting into fighting games, SFIV was well in its prime, so going online was quite traumatizing. I always knew I'd never get good at the game, but I had no other choice but to play it. I had barely learned how to basic combos (button into DP), and to play the game properly I had to go 7 steps further. To this day I struggle with pulling off consistent FADCs in training mode, and I can't imagine myself ever doing them in an actual match. You know, the basic technique of this game. And all the people praising the hard execution only made things worse. Made me feel like I should just give up right there and then because I'm playing the game wrong. Still, the game is really cool to look at, and I am always at awe of what you can do in it. I will never deny it being deep as heck. That being said, I'd take SFV over it any day of the week.

This is exactly how I feel as well. It has a very big mental barrier, in terms of muscle memory and understanding how to apply focus canceling as well as linking properly during gameplay, before you can start enjoying the strategic and footsies aspect of the game properly.

Yous0147 Capcom really fucked up with SF V. They tried to attract casual players by making the game a lot easier, but then launched the game without a story mode, no arcade mode, and lackluster roster (no Guile, Balrog, Sagat, Akuma, Sakura, Evil Ryu...), which are the three biggest draws for casual fighting game fans.

One of the bad/good parts of the game was that some characters had insane barriers of entry due to links and or execution difficulty like C.Viper and Vega. Even some simple must do stuff like Abel step kick links and Deejay machinegun upper link into maraca ultra.

For clarification, double tapping was actually not a technique used for one frame links. Double-tapping is a technique that takes 3 frames at it's fastest. Regardless of how fast you tap the same button twice in a row, pressing the button initially happens on frame 1, the button comes back up to neutral on frame 2, the second finger hits it a second time on frame 3. Plinking makes it so that the game registers two of the same inputs in 2 consecutive frames so that if you are early by one frame, the first input will be a dead input, and the second input will register on the very next frame (the correct frame) for your combo. If you are spot on, the first input will register for the combo and the second hit on the next frame will just be a dead input. If you are late by one frame, you missed it. Plinking only covers for you if you are one frame early. If you're two frames early, you get two dead inputs that don't come out. The only way double-tapping would work on a one frame link is if you happened to hit the first input 2 frames early, the second frame is the button being let back up to a neutral position, then the third frame is the button being pressed on the frame needed for the combo. It's a little too inconsistent for this use case

Agreed on Focus Attack being sick and I'm really glad that it is in Tekken 7 and Smash Ultimate for recent examples besides some moves in SF5 behaving similarly like Zangief's V Skill 2 (which should have been Green Hand but... okay). On the note of similarities, I prefer the V system on paper (comeback factor should be minimised if possible) but don't appreciate that some classic moves have been locked as a V Reversal like Boxer's headbutt and I miss the spectacle of the more hype Ultras (and Supers) in 4.

I actually have mastered this on 6 different accounts, all across the board. It's awesome feeling when you know you're a beast at something that FGC considers trails to be one of the hardest. In fact I finished that again last year, I think. C.Viper/El Feurte is still the hardest one for me tbh. Glad to know it's the same game that pulled you into competitive gaming because it was the same for me. *trick in some trails, you can add in some more combos of your own to make the trails easier. Such as CR.MP twice into CR.HK, just fadc after first CR.MP. :P.

This was my re-intro to SF. I got SSIV cause my cousin had it and I fell in love with Juri and she became my fav character in the franchise. However, the input feel of the game is an ass pain to deal with, one of the main reasons I stopped playing it years ago outside of getting V and VI . The later games made it so that the inputs were more loose and easier to get and there weren't as many 1 link frame combos to master; I never liked 1 links because they're too time constrictive. Watching this and replaying it on my PS3 reminded me of the grind it takes to get good at the game. I like it cause of the immersion and nostalgia but I don't miss the chore of dealing with the difficulty
