This is why complaints of hangars being "too expensive" are often short sighted. Yes, hangars are expensive, but what's more expensive is your airplane dropping 150k in value because it rotted out sitting in the elements.

That DC-3 / C-47 was actually used to fly Ronald Reagan when he was campaigning for the governor of California in the 60’s then converted to fly live turkeys for a turkey farm ….. the vents on the top of the fuselage were installed to release the heat from said turkeys

The plane is worth 35-40K as it sits. Then part it out and scrap the rest. It's at least a 200K repair job and that doesn't account for the avionics if they are bad... run....and don't look back....

My uncle was an engineer for Hartzell propeller in Piqua, Oh. He stuck with them in the TRW days. He did the design work on the voyager that flew around the world. Its super cool to see tou wearing that Hartzell shirt.

Jimmy, the main tank recirc pumps are on the landing light circuit. You have to pull the retractable landing light breakers to stop those pumps.

I love this video! I’ve got two planes at AWO. I’ve looked at that derelict twin on the ramp for as long as I can remember. I used to install avionics on the field and worked in “whole lotta ones”. So cool to see the collaboration.

I think it definitely needs door and window seals, I notice all the condensation on the inside of the windows at the beginning of the video. There's probably a lot more unseen corrosion. Unfortunately. 😢. I think it's a clunker.

Hi Jimmy and team, some years ago (lots actually) my son worked on a small airfield where we once lived. Back then a new start-up company had a King Air twin-engine plane that had dual roles as a VIP plane but with half the seats removed and a "Stretcher" (Gurney?) bolted in was a medivac plane. Due to the sound of Its twin engines and the sound it made, I have a love of twin piston engine aircraft still. . You are so lucky to own or fly twin piston engine aircraft. That unit under the sink goes to a button the staff can carry and when they are cleaning the room if they have an emergency, they can press it and it relays back up to the management where they are when they hit their panic button. That is the locator that is in each room to tell them what room they were in.

A VP at Aerostar Aircraft Co told me that new pressurized piston Aerostar would have over $1.5 million in parts. So…a old one has the same but mostly worn out parts. The guys buying an airplane for $200k generally can’t afford to maintain all those parts. Likewise, they can’t often swing a $500k+ hangar. One guy’s explanation for the large number of ratty piston twins

Thanks once again for an entertaining and enlightening video. Additionally, I am particularly impressed with the father and son dynamics. Silas is really an asset to the presentations. Indeed there would be none without him, but there is so much more. He is so fortunate to be raised by a truly outstanding father who is not just teaching airplanes and work ethic, but all of life’s challenges. Jimmy, you have a fine son who grow up to pass on the values that learned from a great father/son relationship.

What a treat to fly with such a cool man. It's not often you get a History of such a unique aircraft (Americana) and a beautiful day to take in the view. What you get for your service and youtube channel is priceless, what a blessed life you get for fulfilling a childhood dream. (not saying it didn't take work but....)

Advice from a seasoned A&P / Pilot! Don’t do it, they are terribly expensive to maintain and operate. You should of gotten that Piper Aerostar you looked at the other year. At least with those they come with speed so all the maintenance headaches are worth it.

This is same type airplane Cessna 414 my dad had but ours didn't have the tip tanks. I learned to fly on this aircraft and subsequently gained ~3000 hrs flying in it. It was a great plane.

That panic device looked more like a wifi flood sensor to me.

Being an AWO pilot and having crawled around that DC3 a bit I actually know that that plane has for a time a charter plane and was used by Ronald Regan for his gubernatorial campaign in 1966. It had been used to haul turkeys until 1964 hence thew vents on top. It has sat on the airport since I can remember and used to sit further back close to the road until that east side of the airport was developed into how it is now. That airport is an absolute madhouse on sunny weekends in the summer

Like I've said before Jimmy, THAT'S A PLANE YOU NEED!!! Got to fly in a "star" years ago and thought it was the sexiest plane ever built along with the F4U and P51 of course! It's hard to understand why someone would do so little to take care of valuable assets like this. It would probably be less expensive to buy high dollar Cuban Cigars and use $100 dollar bills to light them.😅

You’re going to have a few of the cylinders corroded because the valves remain open when the engine was shut off. The corrosion probably came from a high humidity area and all that humidity crawls right up the exhaust and right into the cylinders. I expect that if you get it started the corrosion on the valves will disappear and the rings will get some oil bringing the compression up. You did say the engines only had 520 hours or something like that.

There was a time when there were 6 Aerostars based at KTOC in Toccoa ,Ga at the same time. They are a special breed of plane.

De-ice boots are actually really saveable. I've treated some really ugly ones these past few months. At work we are prepping planes (like this) for winter season right now. Treat em' with some ShineMaster Prep, Agemaster no 1 and some ShineMaster. It will cost you around 5 hours of work, but they will look like new. It will save you a lot of money and work.

Please keep posting about both projects. Helio's are my favorite but I am interested in all aircraft and your creativity is inspiring.

“You can see the nose gear in the spinner” - this is what experienced pilots can teach any of us. One of the best instructors I ever flew with said to me one day while turning base “can you see our shadow on the ground, (i say yep, how cool), he responds “can you see any other aircraft shadows near us?”…… now, I always look even 15 years later.

787 is 6000’ cabin. Most other airliners are 8000’

It's a shame he let that 414 rot away outside, but it's basically a parts plane at this point. It's too far gone to save. Being pressurized it's not worth what it would take to put it back in flying condition. All of the moisture infiltration means that the seals are gone and it's just done. Sad, but it should have been stored inside. The moisture certainly did its share of damage, but what the moisture didn't ruin, the sun baked the rest of the way to past the point of rescue. Honestly, a 414 is full of too many compromises, in my opinion. The fuselage is larger than the 340, but it's underpowered and you seriously sacrifice range with passengers and baggage. You can't fly it full fuel with 2 people on board, let alone bags. The 340 and 421 present far fewer compromises between range and payload. The 414 has great ramp presence, but it's kind of the red-headed step child of twin Cessnas. That's why I went from my A36TC Bonanza into a 421 Ram conversion before moving to the Conquest II I own and fly now. And you DON'T want an Aerostar if you aren't prepared to pay for the prodigious maintenance. Yes, they are wicked fast and fun to fly, but speaking as someone who had a low-time well sorted one years ago, I was happy to pass it along to the next owner once I got owning one out of my system. It was a maintenance queen and very expensive to maintain. Very finicky to maintain to my standards too. My mechanic spent more time working on mine than I spent flying it. There is a definite price for that performance. But when it was dialed in, it was invigorating and addictive to fly. It's definitely NOT the airplane to do "Jimmy Style". It will certainly bite you, if not kill you. It's a very unforgiving airplane if you do something stupid. It will bite you before you realize what you did.

Oh my gosh, y'all flew out of Pain Field up in Everett! Then flew south toward Thun Field in Pierce County where i soloed and flew out of. I started out on my dad's lil piper colt pa-22. Dad's next plane was our Cherokee 6. We flew everywhere in her. Then he bought a 172, then his last plane was the 210RG turbo. Gosh, you just came across my feed.... what a bit of serendipity! I loved flying with my dad. His buddy and A&P mechanic was Charlie Bombard. He's probably gone on to glory now... He & dad flew up to Alaska for a fishin trip after dad paid him to do the annual for the 210. Oh the stories him, daddy & all the fellas that sat at the round table @ the Hanger Inn restaurant! I can't wait to explore your channel. Your lil shadow will make a fine pilot some day.....or even a great videographer!. I've moved from Puyallup 3 yrs ago and now live in southeast Oklahoma now.... more blue skies!

$100,000 for a $250,000 airplane means you'll put most of the %150,000 to get it in the air again. You may be able to find a flying one for less than the $150, 000 needed for repairs

I always wondered how the wings transfer load on the Aerostar - there's no spar carry through, it looks like the fuselage takes the load from the wing spars. Just weird.

If you got this one free, you would probably be in it about fifty more than it’s worth when you finished.

Hi Jimmy. For a world tour airplane I doubt you will find an old general aviation recip you will want to do that with. Maybe a well kept King Air. Among other reasons, Avgas is getting scarce in many countries. Was recently discussing this very problem with some friends from across the "pond."

Now that was a great ending on two fronts, you dumped the over priced, bad deal of an aircraft and jumped into an Aerostar. I grew up and lived in Santa Maria during the years when TSI came in to town and started manufacturing aircraft again. It was an everyday thing to see one zipping by on departure or approach. A guy I went to high school with was one of the test pilots and I was in awe. At the local airshow a bad a$$ Aerostar named "Zar" painted sinister black was flown by Jimmy Franklin. It performed aerobatics with smoke billowing from both engines. It was a sight to see. Thanks for the renewed memory of my home town involving the Aerostar. Bravo Jimmy!

Jimmy, some altimeters had a vibrator in them so as to avoid stiction. That is probably the noise you heard and couldn't track down. Also, the big Boeing sitting out there is a 787-9 Dreamliner. It's the only one with fold up wing tips. They had to build it that way to fit in the terminal slots at the airports around the world.

That is a super nice plane. Cruising above the clouds, so cool engines. I really enjoyed the story regarding his dad and the plane. Very Cool!

Cessna T303 Crusader, one of the last ones manufactured would be an excellent choice. But you need to state more of your metrics for a better suggestion if that would not suit. The t303 has excellent handling characteristics and decent speed at altitude. The engines are flat rated so you can fly them balls to the wall all day long and easily cruise 190 knots plus

Nascar’s Bobby Allison had a 74 601P Aerostar that had highly modified engines that he designed. Watched him barrel roll that thing over Five Flags Speedway in Pensacola Florida in the 80’s. He was an awesome pilot in his day.

Hey, cool to see a Canadian Harvard at that hanger. I grew up in Tillsonburg Ontario and there is a club that fly them out of there. Used to see them all the time as a kid and pretty sure they still fly to this day.
